Future Tense in Ukrainian

Майбутній Час

Overview

Ukrainian future tense is directly tied to verbal aspect, making it one of the areas where the aspect system has the most visible impact. At the CEFR B1 level, you need to master two distinct future constructions: perfective verbs use their conjugated present-tense forms to express future meaning, while imperfective verbs use either an analytic form (буду + infinitive) or a synthetic form (-тиму/-тимеш).

This dual system is a defining feature of Ukrainian grammar. Understanding that a perfective verb conjugated in the "present" actually means future is crucial -- and distinguishes Ukrainian from languages like English where future marking is separate from aspect.

The synthetic imperfective future (-тиму forms) is distinctly Ukrainian and not shared with Russian, making it a marker of authentic Ukrainian usage.

How It Works

Perfective Future

Simply conjugate the perfective verb in present-tense forms -- the result is future:

Person написати (to write, perf)
1st sg напишу
2nd sg напишеш
3rd sg напише
1st pl напишемо
2nd pl напишете
3rd pl напишуть

Imperfective Future: Analytic (буду + infinitive)

Person Form
1st sg буду писати
2nd sg будеш писати
3rd sg буде писати
1st pl будемо писати
2nd pl будете писати
3rd pl будуть писати

Imperfective Future: Synthetic (-тиму)

Person Form
1st sg писатиму
2nd sg писатимеш
3rd sg писатиме
1st pl писатимемо
2nd pl писатимете
3rd pl писатимуть

Both imperfective future forms are interchangeable in meaning.

Examples in Context

Ukrainian English Note
Напишу листа. I will write a letter. (perf) Completed future action
Буду писати / писатиму. I will be writing. (imperf) Ongoing future
Що робитимеш? What will you be doing? Synthetic form
Прийду о п'ятій. I will come at five. Perfective future
Будемо чекати. We will wait. Analytic imperfective
Зроблю це завтра. I will do it tomorrow. Perfective
Читатиму цілий вечір. I'll be reading all evening. Synthetic imperfective
Він тебе не забуде. He will not forget you. Perfective
Будете обідати? Will you have lunch? Analytic imperfective
Повернуся через годину. I'll be back in an hour. Perfective reflexive

Common Mistakes

Interpreting perfective conjugation as present

  • Wrong: Thinking напишу means "I am writing."
  • Right: Напишу means "I will write."
  • Why: Perfective verbs have no present tense; their conjugated forms are future.

Mixing analytic and synthetic forms

  • Wrong: Буду писатиму.
  • Right: Буду писати. OR Писатиму.
  • Why: Choose one form or the other, never combine them.

Using perfective for ongoing future

  • Wrong: Завтра цілий день напишу. (perfective for duration)
  • Right: Завтра цілий день писатиму.
  • Why: Duration markers require imperfective aspect.

Usage Notes

The synthetic future (-тиму) is considered distinctly Ukrainian and is encouraged in standard usage. The analytic form (буду + infinitive) is shared with Russian and other Slavic languages. Both are equally correct, but using the synthetic form adds a Ukrainian flavor to your speech.

In everyday conversation, both forms are mixed freely. The synthetic form is slightly more compact and often preferred in casual speech.

Practice Tips

  1. Aspect-future mapping: For each verb pair, practice forming both futures: написати → напишу (perf), писати → писатиму / буду писати (imperf).

  2. Tomorrow planning: Describe what you will do tomorrow using perfective verbs (completed actions) and imperfective verbs (ongoing activities).

  3. Synthetic form drill: Practice the -тиму paradigm with five common verbs until it feels natural.
