Basic Conjunctions in Ukrainian

Основні Сполучники

Overview

Conjunctions connect words, phrases, and clauses, enabling you to build more complex and natural-sounding sentences. At the CEFR A1 level, mastering a handful of essential conjunctions transforms your Ukrainian from isolated statements into flowing communication.

Ukrainian conjunctions fall into two broad categories: coordinating (linking equal elements) and subordinating (linking a dependent clause to a main clause). At A1, the most important ones are і/й/та (and), але (but), або (or), бо/тому що (because), and тому (therefore/so).

A distinctive feature of Ukrainian is having multiple words for "and" -- і, й, and та -- which are largely interchangeable but follow euphonic preferences based on surrounding sounds.

Subordinating Conjunctions

The Three Words for "And"

  • і -- default form, used in most positions
  • й -- after a vowel before a consonant: батько й мати
  • та -- stylistic variant of і, also means "and" (distinct from "та" meaning "that" feminine)

Examples in Context

Ukrainian English Note
Я говорю українською і англійською. I speak Ukrainian and English. Standard "and"
Хочу піти, але не можу. I want to go, but I can't. Contrast
Чай або кава? Tea or coffee? Alternative
Не йду, бо йде дощ. I'm not going because it's raining. Informal cause
Батько й мати Father and mother й after vowel
Він хворий, тому не прийшов. He's sick, so he didn't come. Result
Вчу українську, тому що живу в Києві. I'm learning Ukrainian because I live in Kyiv. Formal cause
Якщо хочеш, підемо. If you want, we'll go. Condition
Ні чаю, ні кави. Neither tea nor coffee. Double negation
Знаю, що ти тут. I know that you're here. Content clause

Common Mistakes

Using only і, ignoring euphonic variants

  • Wrong: батько і мати і діти (sounds heavy)
  • Right: батько й мати та діти
  • Why: Alternating і/й/та improves flow. After vowels, й is preferred before consonants.

Confusing бо and тому

  • Wrong: Не прийшов, тому йде дощ. (result where cause is meant)
  • Right: Не прийшов, бо йде дощ. or Йде дощ, тому не прийшов.
  • Why: Бо/тому що introduce the reason; тому introduces the result.

Missing comma before але

  • Wrong: Хочу але не можу.
  • Right: Хочу, але не можу.
  • Why: Ukrainian requires a comma before але (but), бо (because), and other conjunctions connecting clauses.

Usage Notes

In informal speech, "бо" is the default word for "because." In writing and formal speech, "тому що" is preferred. Both are grammatically correct in all contexts.

The conjunction "та" as "and" is common in western Ukrainian speech and in literary language. In everyday central Ukrainian speech, "і" dominates.

Ukrainian punctuation requires commas before subordinating conjunctions and before але/а. This differs from English conventions.

Practice Tips

  1. Sentence combining: Take pairs of simple sentences and combine them using different conjunctions: і, але, бо, тому.

  2. Euphonic і/й/та practice: Read sentences aloud and choose the smoothest-sounding variant of "and" based on surrounding sounds.

  3. Cause-result chains: Practice expressing reasons with бо and results with тому using the same situation from both angles.
