Overview
Basic Conjunctions (Grundlæggende Konjunktioner) is an important grammar concept at the A1 level in Danish. Coordinating conjunctions: og (and), men (but), eller (or), for (because/for), så (so). Do not trigger inversion.
At the beginner level, understanding this concept allows you to express yourself with greater accuracy and nuance. This grammar point builds on foundations you have established at earlier levels and connects to several related areas of Danish grammar.
As you work through this topic, pay attention to how it functions in authentic Danish texts and conversations. The patterns you learn here will become more natural with regular practice and exposure to the language.
How It Works
Core rules
Coordinating conjunctions: og (and), men (but), eller (or), for (because/for), så (so). Do not trigger inversion.
Key patterns
| Danish | English |
|---|---|
| Jeg taler dansk og engelsk. | I speak Danish and English. |
| Han er træt, men glad. | He is tired, but happy. |
| Vil du have te eller kaffe? | Do you want tea or coffee? |
| Det regnede, så vi blev hjemme. | It rained, so we stayed home. |
Coordinating conjunctions
| Danish | English | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| og | and | Connects similar elements |
| men | but | Introduces contrast |
| eller | or | Presents alternatives |
| for | because/for | Gives reason (slightly formal) |
| sa | so | Shows result |
Important: no word order change
Coordinating conjunctions do not trigger inversion. The clause after the conjunction keeps normal SVO order:
| With conjunction | Translation |
|---|---|
| Jeg taler dansk, og hun taler svensk. | I speak Danish, and she speaks Swedish. |
| Han er traet, men han arbejder videre. | He is tired, but he keeps working. |

Common Mistakes
Using fordi when you mean for
- Wrong: Det regnede, fordi vi blev hjemme.
- Right: Det regnede, sa vi blev hjemme. or Vi blev hjemme, fordi det regnede.
- Why: Fordi is subordinating and triggers different word order. For is coordinating and keeps normal order. As a beginner, pay attention to which conjunction you need.
Triggering inversion after coordinating conjunctions
- Wrong: Jeg er traet, og er hun ogsa.
- Right: Jeg er traet, og hun er ogsa.
- Why: Coordinating conjunctions (og, men, eller, for, sa) do not cause inversion. The clause after them keeps normal SVO order.
Overusing og and men
- Wrong: Connecting every sentence with og or men.
- Right: Use sa (so), for (because), and eller (or) for variety.
- Why: Danish has five common coordinating conjunctions. Using all of them makes your speech more natural and precise.
Practice Tips
- Practice with flashcards. Create cards with examples of basic conjunctions on one side and their English translations on the other. Review daily until the patterns feel automatic.
- Use basic conjunctions in daily sentences. Try to create three new sentences each day using this grammar point. Write them in a notebook and review them weekly.
- Listen for basic conjunctions in Danish media. Even at the beginner level, try listening to simple Danish podcasts or children's shows and notice how native speakers use this pattern.
