Overview

Academic Ukrainian (науковий стиль) is the register used in scholarly publications, university lectures, research papers, and scientific discourse. At the CEFR C1 level, understanding and producing academic Ukrainian is essential for higher education and professional research in Ukrainian-speaking contexts.

Academic style is characterized by hedging expressions, impersonal constructions, nominalization, formal connectors, citation patterns, and specialized terminology. It avoids colloquialisms, emotional language, and first-person singular pronouns (preferring "ми" or impersonal constructions).

Common Mistakes

Using first person singular

• Wrong: Я дослідив...

• Why: Academic Ukrainian avoids "я" and uses impersonal or "ми" (authorial we).

Being too assertive

Usage Notes

Ukrainian academic writing follows conventions that are similar to international academic norms but with some Slavic-specific features: extensive use of impersonal -но/-то passives, authorial "ми" (we) even for single authors, and nominalized constructions for information density.

The transition from Soviet-era academic Ukrainian (heavily influenced by Russian) to modern Ukrainian academic norms is ongoing, with increasing emphasis on distinctly Ukrainian vocabulary and constructions.
