Academic Writing Style in Ukrainian

Академічний Стиль

languages.seo.contextNote

In Brief

Academic Ukrainian presents claims in proportion to the evidence. It combines cautious phrases such as видається, що (“it appears that”), impersonal wording such as було встановлено (“it was established”), explicit citations, and connectors that show how each point relates to the argument. The aim is not to sound complicated, but to be precise, traceable, and appropriately reserved.

Overview

Academic writing in Ukrainian is usually described as науковий стиль (“scholarly or scientific style”). You will meet it in journal articles, theses, research reports, conference papers, and advanced university essays. At C1, the challenge is no longer only forming correct sentences: it is choosing wording that distinguishes fact from interpretation, your own conclusion from another author’s claim, and a strong result from a tentative possibility.

This style often reduces attention to the individual writer. Instead of repeatedly using я (“I”), Ukrainian can foreground the article, analysis, evidence, or research process: У статті розглянуто проблему (“The article examines the problem”), Аналіз засвідчив... (“The analysis showed...”), or Можна припустити... (“One may suppose...”). This does not mean that every sentence must be passive. Clear active clauses with an informative subject are often better than heavy, abstract wording.

For an English-speaking learner, many functions will feel familiar: English also hedges claims and cites sources. The important differences are grammatical. Ukrainian has no articles, relies heavily on case endings, and makes wide use of impersonal forms ending in -но/-то. It also permits flexible word order, but academic prose still needs an orderly flow from known information to new information. This topic builds on Formal/Official Language, while focusing specifically on research argument rather than administration or business correspondence.

How It Works

Academic style is not one construction. It is a coordinated set of choices: calibrating certainty, choosing an appropriate sentence perspective, attributing information, and linking claims logically.

Calibrate the strength of a claim

A hedge is language that limits a claim to what the evidence can support. Choose it according to meaning rather than adding можливо everywhere.

Ukrainian form English meaning Typical force
дані підтверджують, що... the data confirm that... strong support
результати свідчать про... the results indicate... evidence points toward a conclusion
з результатів випливає, що... it follows from the results that... reasoned consequence
можна стверджувати, що... it can be argued/stated that... defensible claim
імовірно / ймовірно probably probable, not certain
видається, що... it appears that... cautious interpretation
можна припустити, що... one may suppose that... hypothesis
це може бути пов’язано з... this may be related to... possible explanation
не виключено, що... it cannot be ruled out that... possibility remains open

Both spellings імовірно and ймовірно are standard; the choice is often phonetic and stylistic. More important is the strength of the expression. Do not write підтверджує (“confirms”) when your evidence merely може свідчити (“may indicate”). Conversely, too many hedges can make a well-supported conclusion sound evasive.

Several parenthetical words are normally set off by commas: Отже, результати... (“Thus, the results...”), Імовірно, ця зміна... (“Probably, this change...”). A subordinate clause introduced by що also requires a comma: Видається, що цей підхід ефективний.

Foreground the research, not automatically the researcher

An impersonal construction presents an event without naming a grammatical subject—the person or thing grammatically shown as doing the action. Ukrainian academic prose uses several patterns.

  1. Forms in -но/-то: проаналізовано, визначено, виявлено, запропоновано. These forms do not change for gender or number.
  2. Modal impersonal phrases: можна стверджувати, слід зазначити, доцільно розглянути, необхідно врахувати.
  3. A research noun as subject: аналіз показує, результати засвідчують, дослідження охоплює.
  4. Passive adjective forms where a resulting state matters: метод був запропонований раніше (“the method was proposed earlier”).

With -но/-то, the affected item normally appears in the accusative case (the form marking the direct object, or what the action directly affects): проаналізовано вибірку, визначено основні чинники, зібрано дані. These constructions are especially useful in method and result descriptions:

  • У дослідженні використано корпус із 50 000 слів. — “A 50,000-word corpus was used in the study.”
  • Було виявлено три закономірності. — “Three patterns were identified.”

The past auxiliary було is common when a completed past procedure needs emphasis, but it is not always necessary: У статті розглянуто... is already complete. Avoid forcing an explicit agent into a -но/-то construction. If who acted matters, an active clause is clearer: Дослідники проаналізували дані, not a cumbersome attempt to translate English “by the researchers” word for word.

Attribute ideas and format citations clearly

A citation must show where another person’s idea ends and your own interpretation begins. Ukrainian commonly uses the author’s surname as the subject, a source phrase, or a parenthetical reference.

Citation pattern English meaning Focus
Як зазначає Шевченко (2020), ... As Shevchenko (2020) notes, ... author foregrounded
Шевченко (2020) стверджує, що... Shevchenko (2020) argues that... author’s claim
На думку Шевченка (2020), ... In Shevchenko’s (2020) view, ... viewpoint; surname in genitive
За даними Шевченка (2020), ... According to Shevchenko’s (2020) data, ... evidence or reported data
У праці Шевченка (2020) розглянуто... Shevchenko’s (2020) work examines... source foregrounded
Цей підхід уже описано в літературі (Шевченко, 2020). This approach has already been described in the literature (Shevchenko, 2020). claim foregrounded

Ukrainian surnames may decline—that is, change ending according to their role in the sentence. Thus Шевченко remains unchanged in на думку Шевченка only if the surname follows the appropriate declension pattern shown here: masculine Шевченко → Шевченка. Not every surname behaves identically, so check the bearer’s gender and the surname type rather than applying one ending mechanically.

Use a reporting verb that accurately represents the source: зазначає (“notes”), стверджує (“argues”), доводить (“demonstrates/proves”), припускає (“supposes”), описує (“describes”), заперечує (“denies/disputes”). Academic Ukrainian often uses the present tense when discussing what a published work says: Авторка наголошує... (“The author emphasizes...”). Exact punctuation and bibliography format depend on the required citation style; grammar cannot replace that style guide.

Connect propositions by meaning

A connector should state the logical relationship between sentences. Proposition here simply means the claim or idea expressed by a clause.

Function Ukrainian connectors English equivalents
addition крім того; також; водночас moreover; also; at the same time
contrast однак; проте; натомість however; nevertheless; by contrast/instead
cause оскільки; з огляду на те, що since/because; given that
result отже; тому; таким чином therefore; so; thus
concession попри це; незважаючи на те, що despite this; although
clarification тобто; іншими словами; зокрема that is; in other words; in particular
sequence по-перше; далі; насамкінець first; next; finally
basis на основі даних; відповідно до методики based on the data; in accordance with the method

These items are not interchangeable. Однак introduces contrast, while отже introduces an inference. Водночас may add a simultaneous qualification rather than a direct contradiction. Note the difference between відповідно до (“in accordance with”), which governs the genitive case, and відповідно (“accordingly”), which can function independently.

Build a visible argument

A strong paragraph usually moves through four jobs: introduce the point, provide evidence, interpret it, and state its relevance. Ukrainian’s flexible word order can help maintain this flow. Put familiar context early and the important new information later when that sounds natural:

У межах першого етапу було проаналізовано лексичні одиниці. Отримані результати свідчать про істотну зміну частотності.

“The lexical items were analyzed during the first stage. The results obtained indicate a substantial change in frequency.”

A participle is a verb-based adjective, such as отримані (“obtained”) in отримані результати. Such compact phrases are common, but long chains of verbal nouns and participles can hide the action. Prefer ми проаналізували, як змінюється показник or аналіз показав зміну показника when a heavily nominal version would be difficult to follow.

Examples in Context

Ukrainian English Note
На основі даних сформульовано три висновки. Three conclusions were formulated on the basis of the data. Basis + impersonal -но form
З результатів випливає, що запропонований метод є ефективним. The results indicate that the proposed method is effective. Evidence-based inference
Можна стверджувати, що ця тенденція має системний характер. It can be argued that this trend is systemic. Cautious but defensible claim
Видається, що на результат вплинули зовнішні чинники. It appears that external factors affected the result. Tentative interpretation
Імовірно, відмінність зумовлена обсягом вибірки. The difference is probably due to the sample size. Probability; comma after parenthetical adverb
Це може свідчити про зміну мовної норми. This may indicate a change in the language norm. Claim limited by може
У дослідженні використано два незалежні набори даних. Two independent datasets were used in the study. Method description with -но
Як зазначає Шевченко (2020), поняття потребує уточнення. As Shevchenko (2020) notes, the concept requires clarification. Narrative citation
За даними попередніх досліджень, цей ефект є короткочасним. According to previous studies, this effect is short-lived. Source of evidence foregrounded
Однак отримані результати не підтверджують початкової гіпотези. However, the results obtained do not confirm the initial hypothesis. Contrast and careful negative conclusion
Крім того, слід урахувати регіональні відмінності. In addition, regional differences should be taken into account. Addition + impersonal recommendation
Попри це, запропонований підхід має певні обмеження. Despite this, the proposed approach has certain limitations. Concession and measured criticism
Отже, подальший аналіз доцільно зосередити на двох питаннях. Therefore, further analysis should appropriately focus on two questions. Conclusion and recommendation

Common Mistakes

Claiming more than the evidence shows

  • Wrong: Ці дані безперечно доводять, що метод завжди працює.
  • Right: Ці дані свідчать про ефективність методу за досліджених умов.
  • Why: Безперечно, доводять, and завжди create an absolute claim. State the conditions and choose a verb that matches the evidence.

Copying an English personal frame unnecessarily

  • Awkward in many contexts: Я проаналізував дані й я встановив три закономірності.
  • Better: У дослідженні проаналізовано дані та встановлено три закономірності.
  • Why: Ukrainian often foregrounds the procedure or result. First person is not forbidden, however; use it if the discipline, institution, or task expects an explicit authorial voice.

Mixing an impersonal form with the wrong object structure

  • Wrong: Було проаналізовані результати.
  • Right: Було проаналізовано результати.
  • Also right, with a different structure: Результати були проаналізовані.
  • Why: Проаналізовано is an invariant impersonal form. Проаналізовані is a plural passive adjective and agrees with результати.

Using a connector with the wrong logic

  • Wrong: Вибірка була малою. Отже, результати узгоджуються з попередніми даними.
  • Right: Вибірка була малою. Водночас результати узгоджуються з попередніми даними.
  • Why: Agreement with earlier findings does not follow logically from a small sample. Водночас adds a qualification; отже claims a conclusion.

Citing a source without attribution grammar

  • Wrong: Згідно Шевченко (2020), модель...
  • Right: Згідно з висновками Шевченка (2020), модель...
  • Why: The standard construction is згідно з plus the instrumental case (the form used here after з): з висновками. На думку Шевченка is another natural option.

Making prose “academic” by making it opaque

  • Heavy: Здійснення проведення аналізу даних було реалізовано дослідниками.
  • Clear: Дослідники проаналізували дані.
  • Why: Stacked verbal nouns such as здійснення проведення add length without precision. Academic style values clarity, not maximum abstraction.

Usage Notes

Conventions differ by field. Humanities writing may name scholars and interpret positions frequently; an experimental report may foreground methods and results. Some departments accept ми вважаємо (“we consider”) or an authorial я, especially when intellectual responsibility must be explicit. Others prefer у статті обґрунтовано or на нашу думку. Follow the current guidelines of the journal or institution rather than treating impersonality as an absolute grammatical law.

Даний is common in bureaucratic and older academic prose in the sense “this/given,” but it is often unnecessary. In many sentences, цей is clearer: у цьому дослідженні, not automatically у даному дослідженні. Likewise, являється should not be used as a general calque for “is.” Write метод є ефективним, це становить проблему, or simply метод ефективний, depending on the meaning.

Terminology should be stable. Define a key term once—Під X розуміємо... (“By X we mean...”) or Термін X ужито на позначення... (“The term X is used to denote...”)—then use the same label consistently. Variation that sounds elegant in general prose can create ambiguity in a research text.

Punctuation and typography also carry meaning. Use Ukrainian quotation marks and the required bibliographic standard when submitting formal work. Keep decimal separators, initials, dashes, page references, and transliterated names consistent. These are editorial matters rather than grammar rules, but inconsistency weakens otherwise accurate prose.

Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use

At an advanced level, the key skill is controlling authorial stance—how strongly the writer commits to a proposition. Compare this scale:

  • Результати доводять... — the results prove... (very strong)
  • Результати підтверджують... — the results confirm...
  • Результати свідчать про... — the results indicate...
  • Результати дають підстави припустити... — the results provide grounds to suppose...
  • Результати можуть бути пов’язані з... — the results may be related to...

The strongest form is not automatically the best. A mature argument can use strong wording for directly established facts and cautious wording for causes, generalizations, or implications.

You can also distinguish your voice from the cited author’s voice within one sentence: Шевченко (2020) трактує це явище як виняток; однак отримані нами дані дають підстави розглядати його як системну тенденцію. (“Shevchenko (2020) interprets this phenomenon as an exception; however, our data provide grounds for treating it as a systematic trend.”) The semicolon and connector make the contrast visible, while дають підстави avoids presenting the new interpretation as unquestionable fact.

Be alert to ambiguity in compact noun phrases. Аналіз результатів дослідження студентів might mean analysis of the results of students’ research, or students’ analysis of research results. Cases alone do not always resolve a dense chain. Rewrite it as a clause or split it into two phrases. Precision sometimes requires more words, but those words should reveal relationships rather than merely increase formality.

Finally, academic Ukrainian need not erase people when people matter. Учасники повідомили..., авторка доводить..., and ми порівняли... are clear active constructions. Impersonal language is a tool for managing focus, not a rule that all agency must disappear.

Practice Tips

  1. Build a certainty ladder. Take one claim and rewrite it with доводить, підтверджує, свідчить про, дає підстави припустити, and може бути пов’язано з. Explain what evidence would justify each version.
  2. Transform without making the sentence heavier. Rewrite five method sentences in three ways: active (дослідники проаналізували), impersonal (було проаналізовано), and research-focused (аналіз показав). Choose the version with the clearest focus.
  3. Annotate a real abstract. Mark citations, hedges, impersonal forms, and connectors in four colors. Then check whether each connector expresses a real logical relation and whether every strong claim has visible support.
