Academic Dutch

Academisch Nederlands

This article is part of the Dutch grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

Academic Dutch (academisch Nederlands) is the careful, evidence-based register used in university and scientific writing. It combines precise source attribution with appropriately cautious claims, often using hedges such as waarschijnlijk and lijkt, impersonal or passive constructions, and abstract nouns. Its purpose is not to make simple ideas sound difficult, but to show exactly what is known, who supports a claim, and how strong the evidence is.

Overview

At C1, writing well means more than producing grammatically correct sentences. In an essay, thesis, research article, or literature review, readers expect you to distinguish evidence from interpretation, your own conclusions from other authors’ claims, and established findings from tentative explanations. Academic Dutch supplies recurring structures for doing this: Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat... (“The research shows that...”), De auteurs stellen dat... (“The authors argue that...”), and Dit kan mogelijk worden verklaard door... (“This may possibly be explained by...”).

Academic Dutch builds on formal Written Dutch. It uses hedging (making a claim less absolute), source attribution (stating whose idea or finding you report), the passive voice (presenting what undergoes an action rather than its performer), nominalization (expressing an action or quality as a noun), and an impersonal style. None of these features is automatically academic by itself. Their value lies in choosing the form that best fits the information.

English-speaking learners will recognize many of these conventions, but direct translation is risky. Dutch subordinate clauses send the finite verb (the verb marked for tense) toward the end: De auteurs concluderen dat de maatregel weinig effect heeft. Dutch also often prefers a direct construction where English uses an introductory “it”: Uit de resultaten blijkt dat..., not a word-for-word version of “It appears from the results that....”

How It Works

1. Match certainty to the evidence

A hedge limits the strength or scope of a statement. Good hedging is not vague language used to avoid commitment; it tells the reader how certain a conclusion is. Dutch offers adverbs, modal verbs, and reporting constructions.

Function Useful Dutch form Typical meaning
Express probability waarschijnlijk, vermoedelijk, wellicht, mogelijk probably, presumably, perhaps, possibly
Present an inference lijkt/lijken, schijnt/schijnen seems/seem, appears/appear
State a possibility kan/kunnen, zou/zouden kunnen may/can, could
Limit scope in veel gevallen, doorgaans, tot op zekere hoogte in many cases, generally, to some extent
Link caution to evidence de resultaten wijzen erop dat... the results indicate that...
Avoid a universal claim hangt samen met... is associated with...

Word order matters. An adverb in first position causes inversion (the verb comes before the subject):

  • Vermoedelijk is dit verschil te wijten aan de meetmethode.
  • Mogelijk spelen culturele factoren hierbij een rol.

In a subordinate clause introduced by dat, the finite verb moves to the end:

  • De onderzoekers vermoeden dat culturele factoren hierbij een rol spelen.

Do not pile up cautious forms without a reason. Dit zou wellicht mogelijk kunnen wijzen op... is so heavily hedged that the claim becomes hard to assess. Usually one or two accurately chosen signals are enough: Dit zou erop kunnen wijzen dat... or Dit wijst mogelijk op....

2. Attribute claims and integrate sources

An academic reader must be able to tell whether a sentence reports a result, summarizes an argument, or gives your interpretation. A reporting verb makes that relationship explicit.

Dutch reporting pattern What it presents the source as doing
Jansen (2024) stelt/betoogt dat... making or defending an argument
Jansen (2024) concludeert dat... drawing a conclusion
Jansen (2024) toont aan dat... providing strong evidence or proof
Volgens Jansen (2024)... serving as the source of the statement
Eerder onderzoek wijst erop dat... indicating rather than proving
Zoals De Vries (2023) opmerkt,... drawing attention to an observation

Choose the reporting verb carefully. Beweren can suggest that a claim is doubtful or unsupported, so it is not a neutral substitute for English “claim” in every context. Aantonen is strong: use it only if the evidence really demonstrates the point. More neutral options include stellen, beschrijven, constateren (“observe”), and concluderen.

With volgens, do not normally add a second dat: Volgens de auteurs neemt de vraag toe, not Volgens de auteurs dat de vraag toeneemt. With a reporting verb, dat is natural: De auteurs stellen dat de vraag toeneemt.

Citation punctuation and reference formats depend on the required style guide. The grammatical principle stays the same: integrate the source into a complete sentence and make the source’s role clear. A citation in parentheses does not by itself explain whether the author found, proposed, questioned, or merely discussed something.

3. Use the passive when the process or result is central

The passive voice shifts attention away from the agent (the person or thing performing the action). Dutch forms a process passive with worden plus a past participle (the verb form often beginning with ge-, such as gemeten):

  • Active: De onderzoekers analyseerden de gegevens.
  • Passive: De gegevens werden door de onderzoekers geanalyseerd.

A completed-result or state passive commonly uses zijn plus the participle:

  • De gegevens zijn geanalyseerd.
  • In hoofdstuk 2 is de methode beschreven.
Time or meaning Pattern Example
Present process wordt/worden + participle De variabele wordt gemeten.
Past process werd/werden + participle De deelnemers werden geïnterviewd.
Completed action/result is/zijn + participle De resultaten zijn gepubliceerd.
Modal passive modal + participle + worden De uitkomst moet voorzichtig worden geïnterpreteerd.

The agent can be introduced with door, but omit it when it is unknown, obvious, or irrelevant. If the agent is important, an active sentence is often clearer: Smit ontwikkelde het model in 2019 is more informative than Het model werd in 2019 door Smit ontwikkeld.

4. Build an impersonal style without hiding responsibility

Academic Dutch often avoids making the writer the grammatical subject (the person or thing the sentence is about). Several constructions are available:

  • Er wordt aangenomen dat... — It is assumed that...
  • Uit de analyse blijkt dat... — The analysis shows that...
  • Het is aannemelijk dat... — It is plausible that...
  • In dit hoofdstuk wordt onderzocht of... — This chapter examines whether...
  • Deze studie richt zich op... — This study focuses on...

Men means an unspecified “one/people,” but repeated men can sound general or old-fashioned, and it may hide who is responsible. It is often clearer to name the group: Onderzoekers nemen doorgaans aan dat....

Impersonal style does not mean that ik or wij is forbidden. Some disciplines and institutions prefer an explicit authorial voice, especially when describing choices: In deze studie kiezen we voor een kwalitatieve benadering. Follow the conventions of your program, journal, or supervisor. Never use an impersonal passive merely to disguise a methodological decision that readers need to evaluate.

5. Use nominalization selectively

A nominalization turns an action or quality into a noun (a word naming a thing, process, or idea). It lets you package earlier information as a concept and connect ideas compactly.

Verb or adjective Nominal form Academic phrase
onderzoeken (investigate) het onderzoek na onderzoek van de gegevens
analyseren (analyze) de analyse de analyse van de resultaten
toenemen (increase) de toename de toename van het aantal deelnemers
beoordelen (assess) de beoordeling bij de beoordeling van de kwaliteit
relevant de relevantie de maatschappelijke relevantie

Nominalization creates a denser noun style (naamwoordstijl): Na analyse van de gegevens vond beoordeling van de hypothese plaats. This is grammatical but heavy. A verb often makes the actors and relationships clearer: Nadat de onderzoekers de gegevens hadden geanalyseerd, beoordeelden zij de hypothese. Use nouns when the process itself is the topic, not simply because they sound formal.

6. Guide the reader through the argument

Academic sentences must also show logical relationships. Connectors should describe the actual relationship, not merely decorate the text.

Relationship Dutch connectors
Addition bovendien, daarnaast, tevens
Contrast daarentegen, echter, hoewel
Cause or explanation doordat, aangezien, vanwege
Result daardoor, derhalve, bijgevolg
Example bijvoorbeeld, ter illustratie
Qualification niettemin, voor zover, enerzijds ... anderzijds
Sequence in the text hierna, zoals eerder gesteld, in de volgende paragraaf

The choice affects word order. After a sentence adverb such as daarnaast or daarom, use inversion: Daarnaast worden twee alternatieven besproken. A subordinate conjunction such as hoewel puts the verb at the end of its clause: Hoewel de steekproef klein is, zijn de resultaten relevant.

Examples in Context

Dutch English Note
Uit onderzoek is gebleken dat regelmatige feedback het leerproces ondersteunt. Research has shown that regular feedback supports the learning process. Result presented impersonally
Vermoedelijk is dit verschil te wijten aan de gekozen meetmethode. This difference is presumably due to the chosen measurement method. Cautious explanation with inversion
Zoals eerder gesteld werd, betreft het hier een voorlopige analyse. As was stated earlier, this is a preliminary analysis. Refers back to the text; passive form
Nader onderzoek is vereist om deze hypothese te toetsen. Further research is required to test this hypothesis. Need for future work
De resultaten wijzen erop dat leeftijd mogelijk een rol speelt. The results indicate that age may play a role. Evidence plus calibrated hedge
Volgens Bakker (2025) moet dit begrip ruimer worden opgevat. According to Bakker (2025), this concept should be interpreted more broadly. Integrated source reference
De auteurs betogen dat de bestaande definitie onvoldoende nauwkeurig is. The authors argue that the existing definition is not sufficiently precise. Reports an argument, not a finding
Voor dit onderzoek werden twintig deelnemers geïnterviewd. Twenty participants were interviewed for this study. Method foregrounded in the passive
De verzamelde gegevens zijn vervolgens geanonimiseerd. The collected data were subsequently anonymized. Completed action
Hoewel de steekproef beperkt is, zijn de bevindingen relevant voor vervolgonderzoek. Although the sample is limited, the findings are relevant to follow-up research. Explicit limitation and concession
De analyse van de antwoorden levert drie terugkerende thema’s op. Analysis of the responses produces three recurring themes. Nominalization used as the topic
Deze samenhang hoeft niet noodzakelijkerwijs op een oorzakelijk verband te wijzen. This association does not necessarily indicate a causal relationship. Correlation is not presented as causation
In de volgende paragraaf wordt uiteengezet hoe het model is toegepast. The following paragraph explains how the model was applied. Text organization through an impersonal passive
Op basis van deze gegevens kan worden geconcludeerd dat de maatregel slechts een beperkt effect had. On the basis of these data, it can be concluded that the measure had only a limited effect. Conclusion explicitly tied to evidence

Common Mistakes

Treating a possibility as a fact

  • Wrong: De daling is veroorzaakt door de nieuwe methode.
  • Right: De daling hangt mogelijk samen met de nieuwe methode.
  • Why: Unless the study establishes causation, an absolute causal statement goes beyond the evidence. The correction signals both uncertainty and association.

Copying English subordinate-clause order

  • Wrong: De auteurs concluderen dat de maatregel heeft weinig effect.
  • Right: De auteurs concluderen dat de maatregel weinig effect heeft.
  • Why: In a Dutch dat-clause, the finite verb normally comes at the end of the clause.

Combining volgens with dat

  • Wrong: Volgens Jansen dat de theorie moet worden herzien.
  • Right: Volgens Jansen moet de theorie worden herzien.
  • Also right: Jansen stelt dat de theorie moet worden herzien.
  • Why: Volgens introduces the source directly; it does not introduce a dat-clause.

Choosing a reporting verb that is too strong

  • Wrong: De studie toont aan dat slaaptekort mogelijk de prestaties beïnvloedt.
  • Right: De studie wijst erop dat slaaptekort mogelijk de prestaties beïnvloedt.
  • Why: Aantonen claims demonstration, while wijzen op fits tentative evidence better. The hedge mogelijk also clashes with an unjustifiably strong verb.

Making every sentence passive

  • Wrong: Door De Jong werd het model ontwikkeld en door latere onderzoekers werd het aangepast.
  • Right: De Jong ontwikkelde het model; latere onderzoekers pasten het aan.
  • Why: When the actors matter, active clauses are shorter and make responsibility easier to follow.

Mistaking density for formality

  • Wrong: De uitvoering van de analyse van de metingen vond plaats na voltooiing van de verzameling van de gegevens.
  • Right: Nadat de onderzoekers de gegevens hadden verzameld, analyseerden zij de metingen.
  • Why: A chain of nouns and van-phrases forces the reader to reconstruct the actions. Verbs make the sequence explicit.

Usage Notes

Academic Dutch varies by discipline and genre. A laboratory report may use many method-focused passives, while an essay in the humanities may foreground authors and arguments with active reporting verbs. A thesis introduction can use In deze scriptie onderzoek ik... or Deze scriptie onderzoekt..., depending on local conventions. Ask for a faculty style guide rather than assuming that one style fits every Dutch-speaking university.

There is also a difference between caution and vagueness. Wellicht, mogelijk, and zou kunnen are useful only when the source of uncertainty is understandable. If possible, name the limitation: Door de kleine steekproef kunnen de resultaten niet zonder meer worden veralgemeend. The fixed expression niet zonder meer means “not automatically/without qualification,” and veralgemenen (“generalize”) is common in Belgian Dutch; generaliseren is also widely understood and used.

Prefer exact references over vague pointers. Dit bewijst dat... can leave the reader wondering what dit refers to. A noun phrase is clearer: Deze stijging bewijst echter niet dat.... Likewise, zoals hierboven vermeld is useful only when the relevant point is genuinely easy to find.

Formal vocabulary should remain natural. Words such as derhalve, dientengevolge, and tevens occur in formal prose, but frequent use can sound bureaucratic. Often daarom, daardoor, and ook are clearer. Academic register rewards precision, not maximum formality.

Beyond the Basics: Argument, Stance, and Information Flow

Advanced academic style controls not only grammar but also stance: how strongly the writer aligns with a proposition. Compare this scale:

  1. De gegevens bewijzen dat X het gevolg is van Y. — a very strong claim of proof
  2. De gegevens tonen aan dat X samenhangt met Y. — a strong evidence claim
  3. De gegevens wijzen erop dat X samenhangt met Y. — an evidence-based but cautious inference
  4. De gegevens lijken erop te wijzen dat X mogelijk samenhangt met Y. — a substantially qualified inference

The most cautious sentence is not automatically the best. Select the level that matches the design, data, and accepted knowledge in the field. Overhedging can make solid findings sound unreliable; underhedging can make limited results sound universal.

Academic writers also manage the difference between their own voice and the source’s voice. Consider:

  • Peters (2022) stelt dat het beleid doeltreffend is. — Peters owns the evaluation.
  • Het beleid is doeltreffend (Peters, 2022). — the writer presents the evaluation more directly, with supporting attribution.
  • Hoewel Peters (2022) het beleid doeltreffend noemt, laten recentere gegevens een gemengd beeld zien. — the writer compares the source with later evidence.

Variation in syntax improves information flow. A passive can keep the current topic first: after discussing de gegevens, continue with De gegevens werden in drie fasen verzameld. An active can introduce an important actor: Twee onafhankelijke beoordelaars codeerden vervolgens de antwoorden. The relevant question is not “Is passive academic?” but “What should the reader focus on now?”

Finally, be alert to compressed modifier chains. Dutch permits dense noun groups such as de door de commissie voorgestelde wijzigingen (“the changes proposed by the committee”). These are useful in moderation, but several nested modifiers slow comprehension. Splitting them can help: De commissie stelde wijzigingen voor. Deze wijzigingen worden hieronder besproken. Strong academic prose alternates compact packaging with explicit clauses.

Practice Tips

  1. Build a certainty ladder. Take one claim and rewrite it with toont aan, wijst erop, lijkt, and zou kunnen. Explain what evidence would justify each version.
  2. Audit one paragraph by function. Underline every source attribution, circle every hedge, and mark every passive. Check whether each choice clarifies evidence, responsibility, or focus; revise anything used only to sound formal.
  3. Turn nouns back into verbs. Find long phrases containing van, -ing, or het + infinitive. Rewrite them with an active verb, then compare both versions and retain the clearer one.
