Academic Writing Style in Polish
Styl Akademicki
This article is part of the Polish grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
In Brief
Academic Polish presents claims as conclusions supported by evidence, not simply as the writer’s opinions. Typical tools include cautious wording such as wydaje się, że (“it seems that”), impersonal forms such as można stwierdzić, że (“it can be stated that”), source formulas such as jak podaje Nowak (2020) (“as Nowak (2020) states”), and connectors that make the logic explicit. Good academic style is precise rather than merely complicated.
Overview
Styl akademicki is the variety of Polish used in research articles, dissertations, university assignments, conference papers, and scholarly reports. At C1, the challenge is not only grammatical correctness. You must also show where information comes from, distinguish evidence from interpretation, signal how certain a conclusion is, and guide the reader through a sustained argument.
An English-speaking writer will recognize many of the same aims in English academic prose, but the preferred packaging often differs. Polish readily uses impersonal constructions and verbal nouns: nouns naming actions, such as analiza (“analysis”) or zastosowanie (“application”). A Polish text may therefore sound less writer-centered than an English text using “I argue” or “we examined.” This does not mean that first-person forms are forbidden; their acceptability depends on the field, institution, and genre.
Academic style is not a license for inflated vocabulary or very long sentences. A successful text makes the relation between claim, evidence, and source easy to follow. The main resources are calibrated claims, impersonal presentation, conventional citation language, formal connectors, and accurate case forms after fixed expressions.
How It Works
Match the strength of the claim to the evidence
A hedge is wording that limits the certainty or scope of a claim. It allows you to distinguish a possibility from a probability and a tendency from a universal rule. Hedging is not empty hesitation: it tells the reader how far the evidence permits you to go.
| Function | Common Polish wording | Typical force |
|---|---|---|
| Present a tentative interpretation | wydaje się, że... | it seems that... |
| Mark probability | prawdopodobnie, najprawdopodobniej | probably, most probably |
| Mark possibility | możliwe, że..., można przypuszczać, że... | it is possible / one may suppose that... |
| Limit the scope | w pewnym stopniu, w większości przypadków | to some extent, in most cases |
| Describe a tendency | wyniki sugerują, że..., dane wskazują na... | the results suggest / the data point to... |
| State a supported conclusion | z wyników wynika, że... | the results indicate/show that... |
| Make a stronger conclusion | można stwierdzić, że... | it can be stated/concluded that... |
The grammatical pattern matters. Wskazywać na takes the accusative case (the noun form used here after na): dane wskazują na istotną zależność. By contrast, wynikać z takes the genitive case (the form often corresponding to English “of” or “from”): z analizy wynika, z wyników wynika. Avoid strengthening a statement with bez wątpienia (“without doubt”) unless the evidence genuinely justifies it.
Put evidence or the research process in the foreground
Polish has several ways to reduce emphasis on the individual researcher.
| Pattern | Example | Main effect |
|---|---|---|
| Modal impersonal expression + infinitive | Można wyróżnić trzy grupy. | “Three groups can be distinguished”; presents an available analysis |
| należy + infinitive | Należy uwzględnić ograniczenia badania. | “The study’s limitations should be considered”; marks necessity |
| Past impersonal form in -no/-to | Przeanalizowano 120 ankiet. | “120 questionnaires were analyzed”; foregrounds the procedure |
| Passive voice | Dane zostały zebrane w 2024 roku. | “The data were collected in 2024”; foregrounds the affected item |
| Reflexive impersonal się | W literaturze przyjmuje się dwa ujęcia. | “Two approaches are adopted in the literature”; presents a convention |
| Verbal noun | Przeprowadzenie analizy umożliwiło... | “Conducting the analysis made it possible...”; packages an action as a concept |
An infinitive is the basic “to...” form of a verb, such as wyróżnić (“to distinguish”). The -no/-to construction is especially useful in method descriptions because it reports an action without naming an agent. Its object normally remains in the accusative: przeanalizowano dane (“the data were analyzed”), not a nominative form created as if the sentence were passive.
Do not remove the researcher automatically. If authorship or responsibility matters, an active sentence can be clearer: W niniejszym artykule analizuję... (“In this article, I analyze...”) or W badaniu analizujemy... (“In the study, we analyze...”). Follow the conventions of the relevant department or journal.
Introduce and position sources
Citation grammar should make clear whether a source reports, argues, observes, or merely suggests something. Choose the reporting verb according to the source’s actual contribution.
| Purpose | Polish pattern | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Attribute information | Jak podaje Nowak (2020), ... | podaje is neutral: states/reports |
| Present an argument | Nowak (2020) twierdzi, że... | stronger: argues/claims that |
| Refer to an observation | Nowak (2020) zauważa, że... | notes/observes that |
| Report emphasis | Nowak (2020) podkreśla, że... | emphasizes that |
| Report evidence | Badania Kowalskiej (2021) wykazały, że... | the studies showed that |
| Point to a discussion | Zagadnienie to omawia Nowak (2020). | Nowak discusses this issue |
| Compare several sources | Podobne stanowisko zajmują Kowalska (2019) i Nowak (2020). | identifies a shared position |
Polish surnames may decline: their endings can change according to grammatical role. Thus badania Kowalskiej can mean “Kowalska’s studies” or “the studies by Kowalska.” Citation systems and editorial policies differ, so use the required bibliographic format consistently; grammar cannot replace a style guide.
A useful paragraph often separates three moves:
- Source: Jak wskazuje Nowak (2020), zjawisko ma charakter wieloczynnikowy.
- Evidence or comparison: Potwierdzają to również wyniki Kowalskiej (2022).
- Your interpretation: Można zatem przypuszczać, że różnic nie wyjaśnia jeden czynnik.
This sequence prevents your interpretation from being mistaken for the cited author’s conclusion.
Show the logical relation explicitly
Connectors should express a real relation, not merely make prose sound formal.
| Relation | Useful connectors | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Addition | ponadto, co więcej | moreover, furthermore |
| Contrast | jednak, natomiast, z kolei | however; by contrast; in turn |
| Concession | mimo że, chociaż, pomimo + genitive | although; despite |
| Cause | ponieważ, ze względu na + accusative | because; owing to |
| Result | dlatego, w związku z tym, tym samym | therefore; consequently; thereby |
| Inference | zatem, wobec tego | thus; accordingly |
| Specification | w szczególności, zwłaszcza | in particular, especially |
| Reformulation | innymi słowy | in other words |
| Sequence | po pierwsze, następnie, ostatecznie | first, next, ultimately |
Natomiast normally sets up a contrast between parallel topics: Pierwsza grupa preferowała tekst, natomiast druga wybrała nagranie. It is not a decorative synonym for every English “however.” Tym samym signals that one fact produces or entails another, while zatem introduces an inference. If no such relation exists, the connector misleads the reader.
Build evidence-based frames accurately
Many academic phrases control the case of the following noun.
| Frame | Required form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| na podstawie (“on the basis of”) | genitive | na podstawie danych |
| w świetle (“in light of”) | genitive | w świetle wyników |
| w odniesieniu do (“with reference to”) | genitive | w odniesieniu do hipotezy |
| ze względu na (“because of / with regard to”) | accusative | ze względu na małą próbę |
| zgodnie z (“in accordance with”) | instrumental | zgodnie z przyjętą metodą |
| w porównaniu z (“in comparison with”) | instrumental | w porównaniu z grupą kontrolną |
The instrumental is the noun form used after certain prepositions and often translated with “with” or “by.” Learn each frame together with its required case and a complete noun phrase; memorizing only the connector invites ending errors.
Examples in Context
| Polish | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Z wyników wynika, że różnica nie jest przypadkowa. | The results indicate that the difference is not accidental. | Evidence-based conclusion; z + genitive |
| Można stwierdzić, że hipoteza została częściowo potwierdzona. | It can be stated that the hypothesis was partially confirmed. | Impersonal conclusion with limited scope |
| Na podstawie danych wyróżniono trzy kategorie odpowiedzi. | Three response categories were distinguished on the basis of the data. | Evidence frame plus -no/-to form |
| Jak podaje Nowak (2020), termin ten ma kilka definicji. | As Nowak (2020) states, this term has several definitions. | Neutral attribution |
| Wydaje się, że na wynik wpłynęła liczebność próby. | It seems that the sample size affected the result. | Cautious interpretation |
| Uzyskane dane sugerują istnienie słabej zależności. | The data obtained suggest the existence of a weak relationship. | sugerować + accusative noun phrase |
| W badaniu przeanalizowano 120 ankiet. | The study analyzed 120 questionnaires. | Method reported impersonally |
| Należy jednak uwzględnić ograniczenia przyjętej metody. | However, the limitations of the adopted method should be considered. | Necessary qualification |
| Kowalska (2021) podkreśla, że pojęcia te nie są tożsame. | Kowalska (2021) emphasizes that these concepts are not identical. | Reporting verb reflects emphasis |
| Podobne wyniki uzyskano w badaniu Wiśniewskiego (2023). | Similar results were obtained in Wiśniewski’s 2023 study. | Links current evidence to prior research |
| Pierwsza grupa osiągnęła lepszy wynik, natomiast w drugiej grupie nie odnotowano zmiany. | The first group achieved a better result, whereas no change was recorded in the second group. | Contrast between parallel groups |
| Ze względu na niewielką próbę wyników nie można uogólniać. | Because of the small sample, the results cannot be generalized. | Explicit methodological limitation |
| W świetle przedstawionych argumentów zasadne wydaje się przyjęcie szerszej definicji. | In light of the arguments presented, adopting a broader definition appears justified. | Formal inference with hedging |
| Ponadto analiza jakościowa ujawniła różnice między grupami. | Furthermore, the qualitative analysis revealed differences between the groups. | Adds a distinct supporting point |
Common Mistakes
Translating “according to” word for word
- Wrong: Według Nowak (2020), wyniki są jednoznaczne.
- Right: Według Nowak (2020) wyniki są jednoznaczne. / Jak podaje Nowak (2020), wyniki są jednoznaczne.
- Why: Do not insert a comma after a short initial według phrase by English habit. If the source’s surname declines in the chosen structure, use the correct form; citation-house rules may affect how names are displayed.
Using a connector without its logic
- Wrong: Badanie objęło dwie grupy. Tym samym druga grupa liczyła 40 osób.
- Right: Badanie objęło dwie grupy. Druga grupa liczyła 40 osób.
- Why: Tym samym means that the first statement causes or entails the second. Here, the second sentence merely supplies detail.
Making every claim categorical
- Wrong: Mała próba dowodzi, że metoda jest nieskuteczna.
- Right: Wyniki uzyskane na małej próbie mogą wskazywać, że metoda jest nieskuteczna.
- Why: Dowodzić (“to prove”) is too strong when the evidence only points toward an interpretation. Match the verb and hedge to the quality of the evidence.
Confusing an impersonal form with a passive form
- Wrong: Przeanalizowano zostały dane.
- Right: Przeanalizowano dane. / Dane zostały przeanalizowane.
- Why: Przeanalizowano is already impersonal. The alternative uses the passive participle przeanalizowane (an adjective-like verb form) with zostały. Do not combine both patterns.
Choosing the wrong case after a fixed phrase
- Wrong: na podstawie dane; zgodnie z metoda
- Right: na podstawie danych; zgodnie z metodą
- Why: Na podstawie requires the genitive, while zgodnie z requires the instrumental. Store academic frames together with a model phrase.
Hiding responsibility behind excessive impersonality
- Weak: Pominięto część danych.
- Clearer when responsibility matters: W analizie pominęliśmy część danych z powodu brakujących odpowiedzi.
- Why: An impersonal construction can conceal who made a methodological decision. Academic caution should not reduce transparency.
Usage Notes
Conventions vary across disciplines. Humanities writing may give more space to an explicitly positioned author, while many empirical reports strongly foreground methods and results. A bachelor’s thesis, a journal article, and a conference abstract may also follow different expectations. Check current departmental or publisher guidance before deciding whether to use analizuję, authorial analizujemy, or an impersonal alternative.
First-person plural uważamy can mean “we, the authors,” but it may also sound as if the reader is included. Use it only when the reference is clear. Likewise, phrases such as jak wiadomo (“as is known”) and oczywiście (“obviously”) can dismiss a point that still needs evidence. Prefer a source or an explicit premise.
Formal does not mean bureaucratic. Heavy strings of verbal nouns can obscure who did what: dokonanie przeprowadzenia oceny is needlessly inflated. Usually przeprowadzenie oceny or the verb oceniono is clearer. Repetition is not always a fault either: repeating a precise technical term is often better than replacing it with an inaccurate synonym.
Polish punctuation also deserves attention. A subordinate clause (a clause dependent on another clause) introduced by że, ponieważ, chociaż, or mimo że is normally separated with a comma: Wyniki sugerują, że hipoteza była trafna. English-speaking writers should not transfer English comma habits mechanically.
Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use
Skilled academic writing creates a stance, meaning the author’s carefully controlled position toward a claim. That stance can be distributed across several features rather than expressed by one hedge:
W świetle dostępnych danych zasadne wydaje się ostrożne przyjęcie hipotezy, choć kwestia ta wymaga dalszych badań.
Here w świetle dostępnych danych defines the evidence base, zasadne wydaje się avoids an absolute claim, ostrożne narrows the commitment, and choć introduces a limitation. Stacking such devices can be useful, but too many may make the sentence evasive. Ask whether each element adds information.
You can also distinguish your voice from a source’s voice through verb choice. Autor dowodzi presents the source as offering a proof or sustained demonstration; autor twierdzi reports a claim; autor sugeruje marks it as tentative; autor zakłada identifies an assumption. These are not interchangeable ornaments. A fair literature review represents the source’s degree of certainty accurately.
Nominalization can improve cohesion by turning an earlier process into the topic of the next sentence:
Zespół zmodyfikował procedurę. Modyfikacja ta skróciła czas badania.
The noun modyfikacja points back to the first sentence and lets the argument advance. Used selectively, this creates a dense but readable chain of ideas. Used everywhere, it produces static prose. Alternate noun-based summaries with finite verbs—verbs marked for tense and person—when the actor or sequence of actions matters.
Finally, academic caution includes defining scope. Expressions such as w analizowanym materiale, w badanej grupie, and w większości omawianych przypadków prevent a local observation from sounding universal. This kind of precision is often more informative than adding być może (“perhaps”) to an otherwise overgeneralized claim.
Practice Tips
- Build phrase families, not isolated word lists. Record a complete pattern with its case: na podstawie danych, w świetle wyników, zgodnie z metodą. Replace the noun while preserving the correct ending.
- Rewrite one claim at three strengths. Compare wyniki mogą sugerować, wyniki wskazują, and wyniki dowodzą. Then decide what evidence would justify each version.
- Color-code a real paragraph. Mark source attribution, evidence, your interpretation, limitation, and connector in different colors. If you cannot tell whose claim a sentence contains or why it follows the previous one, revise it.
