In Brief

Formal written Dutch often packs information into noun phrases, uses passive or impersonal constructions when the actor is unimportant, and links claims explicitly with words such as daarom, daarentegen and bijgevolg. Good modern prose is not automatically old-fashioned or bureaucratic: clarity usually matters more than strings of formal nouns and passive verbs.

Overview

At C1, writing well in Dutch means more than avoiding conversational vocabulary. You need to control information density, sentence structure, register and the relationship between claims. A report, academic paper, policy document and serious news article may all sound more detached than a conversation, but they do not use exactly the same style.

Several features tend to occur together. A writer may use nominalization (turning an action or quality into a noun), the passive voice, impersonal wording, embedded clauses and learned vocabulary. Compare the direct De commissie onderzocht de klacht (“The committee investigated the complaint”) with Het onderzoek naar de klacht werd door de commissie uitgevoerd (“The investigation into the complaint was carried out by the committee”). The second version foregrounds the investigation rather than the committee, but it is also heavier.

English has similar academic and administrative styles, so many structures will feel familiar. The main challenge is not discovering a completely new system; it is learning which Dutch formulations are idiomatic and how Dutch word order behaves in long clauses. A literal English-to-Dutch conversion can produce the wrong preposition, an unnatural abstract noun or a verb cluster that is difficult to follow.

How It Works

1. Choose what the sentence foregrounds

Formal prose often begins with information already known and ends with newer or more important information. This helps a paragraph flow.

  • De minister presenteerde gisteren het voorstel. — the minister is the starting point.
  • Het voorstel werd gisteren door de minister gepresenteerd. — the proposal is the starting point.
  • Gisteren werd het voorstel gepresenteerd. — the event and time matter; the actor is omitted.

The grammatical subject (the person or thing that the sentence is built around) need not be the person performing the action. In the passive sentence, het voorstel is the subject even though the minister performs the action.

2. Use nominal style selectively

Dutch can turn verbs and adjectives into nouns. This is called nominalization: an action becomes a “thing” that can be discussed, classified or linked to another idea.

More verbal More nominal Typical effect
De prijzen stijgen. de stijging van de prijzen packages the event as a topic
Wij voeren de maatregel uit. de uitvoering van de maatregel focuses on the process or policy
De resultaten verschillen. het verschil tussen de resultaten names the relationship
Het systeem is toegankelijk. de toegankelijkheid van het systeem turns a quality into a concept
Men onderzoekt hoe taal verandert. onderzoek naar taalverandering creates a compact noun phrase

Common noun-forming endings include -ing (ontwikkeling), -heid (duidelijkheid), -teit (kwaliteit) and -atie (evaluatie). There is no safe rule that lets you invent every noun mechanically: learn established combinations, including their prepositions. Dutch has onderzoek naar, invloed op, een toename van and behoefte aan.

Nominal style is useful in headings and when an action has already been introduced. Too much of it produces naamwoordstijl, noun-heavy prose in which responsibility and action become hard to see:

  • Heavy: Na de uitvoering van de evaluatie zal besluitvorming over voortzetting plaatsvinden.
  • Clearer: Nadat we het programma hebben geëvalueerd, besluiten we of we ermee doorgaan.

3. Form the passive

The passive uses an auxiliary verb (a helping verb) plus a past participle (a form such as geschreven or onderzocht).

Meaning Pattern Example
event or process form of worden + past participle De aanvragen worden beoordeeld.
completed/resulting state form of zijn + past participle De aanvragen zijn beoordeeld.
modal passive modal + past participle + worden De aanvragen moeten worden beoordeeld.

An actor can be added with door: Het rapport werd door twee onderzoekers geschreven. Add it only when it contributes useful information. If the actor is central, an active sentence is often simpler: Twee onderzoekers schreven het rapport.

In a subordinate clause (a clause that depends on another clause), the finite verb moves towards the end: omdat de aanvragen zorgvuldig worden beoordeeld. With a modal passive, several verbs collect at the end: omdat de resultaten opnieuw moeten worden gecontroleerd. Such clusters are grammatical, but a long sentence may still need rewriting for readability.

4. Build an impersonal stance

Impersonal constructions let a writer present an assessment without making ik or wij the centre of the sentence.

Construction Function Example
er wordt + participle reports an activity without naming the actor Er wordt nog over het voorstel onderhandeld.
het blijkt dat presents a finding Uit de cijfers blijkt dat de vraag afneemt.
er lijkt sprake van expresses a cautious interpretation Er lijkt sprake van een tijdelijke daling.
het valt te + infinitive expresses an assessment Het valt te betwijfelen of dit haalbaar is.
men + verb general human subject Men neemt doorgaans aan dat...
naar verwachting marks a forecast De productie zal naar verwachting stijgen.

An infinitive is the basic verb form, such as betwijfelen or verwachten. Although men is grammatically useful, modern Dutch often prefers a specific subject, a passive, or we when the intended group is clear. Academic writing does not universally ban ik and wij; discipline and text type determine what sounds appropriate.

5. Control complex sentence structure

Formal Dutch relies on relations such as cause, contrast, condition and concession. A conjunction is a linking word that joins clauses. Subordinating conjunctions such as omdat, hoewel, aangezien and indien send the finite verb to the end of their clause.

Relation Connector Example
cause omdat, aangezien, doordat Aangezien gegevens ontbreken, is vergelijking niet mogelijk.
contrast maar, daarentegen, terwijl De kosten daalden, terwijl de vraag toenam.
concession hoewel, ondanks het feit dat Hoewel de steekproef klein is, zijn de resultaten relevant.
condition als, indien, mits De regeling geldt, mits aan alle voorwaarden is voldaan.
result daardoor, zodat, bijgevolg De termijn is verstreken, zodat bezwaar niet meer mogelijk is.

Do not assume that a longer connector is better. Omdat is often clearer than vanwege het feit dat; over may be better than ten aanzien van. Use the formal option when its precision or register serves the text.

Relative clauses add information about a noun. Die refers to common-gender plural or singular de-words; dat refers to singular het-words: de maatregel die is ingevoerd but het voorstel dat is aangenomen. Long interruptions between a noun and its verb make readers work harder, even when the grammar is correct.

6. Use conventional formal phrases with care

Some fixed expressions remain useful in correspondence and official texts:

  • Naar aanleiding van uw brief van 3 mei... — “In response to your letter of 3 May...”
  • Hierbij bevestigen wij de ontvangst van... — “We hereby confirm receipt of...”
  • Met betrekking tot uw aanvraag... — “With regard to your application...”
  • Ter informatie sturen wij u... — “For your information, we are sending you...”

Uw schrijven for “your letter” is more distant and old-fashioned than uw brief. Te uwer informatie preserves an old case form and now sounds ceremonial or archaic. Likewise, Dientengevolge dient te worden opgemerkt dat... is possible but conspicuously bureaucratic: the repetition of dien- and the passive make a simple point sound inflated. Recognition is more important than imitation.

Examples in Context

Dutch English Note
Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat de maatregel weinig effect heeft. The study shows that the measure has little effect. Impersonal presentation of a finding
Het valt te betwijfelen of deze aanpak op lange termijn haalbaar is. It is doubtful whether this approach is viable in the long term. Cautious formal assessment
De aanvragen worden in volgorde van ontvangst behandeld. Applications are processed in the order in which they are received. Process passive; actor is irrelevant
De resultaten zijn inmiddels gepubliceerd. The results have now been published. Completed passive
Om vertekening te voorkomen, moeten de gegevens opnieuw worden gecontroleerd. To prevent bias, the data must be checked again. Modal passive and purpose phrase
Hoewel de respons beperkt was, wijzen de antwoorden op een duidelijke trend. Although the response was limited, the answers indicate a clear trend. Concession followed by a measured claim
De stijging van de kosten hangt samen met de toenemende vraag. The increase in costs is related to growing demand. Nominalizations used economically
Aangezien vergelijkbare cijfers ontbreken, kunnen geen harde conclusies worden getrokken. Since comparable figures are lacking, no firm conclusions can be drawn. Cause plus passive caution
Naar aanleiding van uw brief verzoeken wij u de ontbrekende stukken aan te leveren. In response to your letter, we ask you to provide the missing documents. Formal correspondence
Daarentegen bleef het aantal vaste medewerkers vrijwel gelijk. By contrast, the number of permanent employees remained almost unchanged. Paragraph-level contrast
Er lijkt sprake te zijn van een tijdelijk herstel. There appears to be a temporary recovery. Impersonal hedging
Indien u niet binnen vier weken reageert, wordt de aanvraag gesloten. If you do not respond within four weeks, the application will be closed. Formal condition; als is less formal
Te uwer informatie treft u het besluit als bijlage aan. For your information, you will find the decision attached. Correct but archaic/ceremonial
Dientengevolge dient te worden opgemerkt dat nader onderzoek noodzakelijk is. Consequently, it should be noted that further research is necessary. Intentionally bureaucratic and usually too heavy

Common Mistakes

Treating formality as maximum complexity

  • Weak: In het kader van de totstandbrenging van verbetering zal implementatie van maatregelen plaatsvinden.
  • Better: Om de situatie te verbeteren, voeren we maatregelen in.
  • Why: Abstract nouns and stock phrases do not make an argument more professional. Name the action and actor when they matter.

Translating English noun combinations literally

  • Wrong: het taal verandering onderzoek
  • Right: het onderzoek naar taalverandering
  • Why: Dutch can form compounds, but it also relies on fixed prepositional combinations. English strings of nouns cannot simply be copied word for word.

Losing verb order in a subordinate clause

  • Wrong: omdat de resultaten moeten worden opnieuw gecontroleerd
  • Right: omdat de resultaten opnieuw moeten worden gecontroleerd
  • Why: The adverb opnieuw normally comes before the final verb cluster here.

Using zijn for an ongoing passive process

  • Wrong: De aanvragen zijn elke maandag beoordeeld. (if you mean the regular procedure)
  • Right: De aanvragen worden elke maandag beoordeeld.
  • Why: Worden presents the event or process; zijn generally presents completion or the resulting state.

Hiding a necessary actor

  • Unclear: Er is besloten dat de afdeling wordt opgeheven.
  • Clearer: De directie heeft besloten de afdeling op te heffen.
  • Why: An impersonal passive can conceal who is responsible. In reports, journalism and workplace communication, that may remove essential information.

Using archaic correspondence formulas as neutral modern Dutch

  • Marked: Naar aanleiding van uw schrijven delen wij u het navolgende mede.
  • Modern: Naar aanleiding van uw brief laten wij u het volgende weten.
  • Why: schrijven, navolgende and mededelen in this combination evoke traditional administrative prose.

Usage Notes

“Written Dutch” is not one register. Academic prose values definitions, explicit reasoning, source attribution and appropriately cautious claims. Journalism often favours shorter sentences and active verbs, though headlines have their own compressed grammar. Administrative texts use standardized terms because legal consistency may matter. Business correspondence generally benefits from polite but direct wording.

Formality also has degrees. Indien and mits are more formal than ordinary als, but mits specifically means “provided that” and therefore cannot replace every conditional als. Dientengevolge is markedly formal; daardoor or daarom is often more natural. Echter is common in writing, but it does not behave exactly like English sentence-initial “however.” Natural options include De uitkomst is echter onzeker or Toch is de uitkomst onzeker.

Dutch punctuation can differ from English habits. Do not place a comma automatically before every subordinate clause: We vertrekken omdat het laat is. A preceding subordinate clause is normally separated from the main clause: Omdat het laat is, vertrekken we. A comma also helps mark longer clause boundaries, but punctuation should support structure rather than copy English patterns mechanically.

Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use

Strong C1–C2 writing varies grammatical perspective instead of maintaining a uniformly impersonal tone. An author may first name the researchers, then use passive sentences while discussing the procedure, and finally use an impersonal evaluation for a cautious conclusion. This creates cohesion without needless repetition.

Advanced writers also distinguish hedging from evasion. Hedging means limiting a claim to the evidence: De resultaten lijken erop te wijzen dat... or Op basis van deze gegevens kan niet worden uitgesloten dat... This is valuable when certainty is genuinely limited. Piling up mogelijk, wellicht, lijkt and zou kunnen in one sentence makes the degree of commitment unclear.

A further hallmark of good prose is parallel structure: comparable ideas receive comparable grammatical forms. For example, Het onderzoek beoogt de oorzaken vast te stellen, de gevolgen te beschrijven en oplossingen voor te stellen. Mixing nouns and clauses without reason is less balanced: Het onderzoek beoogt de vaststelling van de oorzaken, dat de gevolgen worden beschreven en het voorstellen van oplossingen.

Finally, dense official Dutch may contain old case remnants in expressions such as te allen tijde, in dezen, uit dien hoofde and te uwer informatie. They are fixed forms, not a productive case system that you should apply to new words. Learn to recognize them, and use a modern equivalent unless the genre genuinely calls for traditional legal or ceremonial language.

Practice Tips

  1. Rewrite in both directions. Turn De commissie beoordeelt de aanvragen into a passive and a nominal version. Then decide which version best fits a report, an email and a news item.
  2. Mark sentence roles while reading. Underline connectors, circle the finite verb, and identify who performs each action. This is especially useful in sentences with several final verbs.
  3. Edit for actors and actions. In your own paragraph, highlight passive forms and abstract nouns. Keep those that organize the information; replace those that merely make the text longer.
