Time Expressions in Tagalog
Mga Ekspresyon ng Oras
Overview
Since Tagalog verbs mark aspect (completed, incompleted, contemplated) rather than tense, time expressions play a critical role in specifying when actions happen. Words like ngayon (now), kahapon (yesterday), and bukas (tomorrow) provide the temporal context that aspect alone does not convey. This makes time expressions an essential A1 topic.
Filipino daily life revolves around time-related conversations — from scheduling meetings to discussing what happened earlier. The basic time words are simple to learn and immediately useful. You will use them in combination with verbs in every aspect to paint a clear picture of when things happen.
Time expressions typically appear at the end of a sentence or at the beginning for emphasis. They work naturally with the aspect system: completed aspect + kahapon = past event, contemplated aspect + bukas = future plan.

Common Mistakes
Relying Only on Verb Aspect Without Time Words
- Wrong: Kumakain ako. (unclear whether habitual or right now)
- Right: Kumakain ako ngayon. (I am eating now.) or Kumakain ako araw-araw. (I eat every day.)
- Why: Incompleted aspect can mean both ongoing and habitual. Time words clarify the meaning.
Confusing Kanina and Kahapon
- Wrong: Kumain ako kanina. (when it happened yesterday)
- Right: Kumain ako kahapon. (I ate yesterday.)
- Why: Kanina means earlier today; kahapon means yesterday. They cover different time frames.
Misplacing Time Expressions
- Wrong: Bukas kumain ako.
- Right: Kakain ako bukas. or Bukas, kakain ako.
- Why: Time expressions go at the end of the sentence or at the very beginning (with a comma for emphasis). They do not go between the verb and pronoun.
Practice Tips
Daily timeline: Each evening, describe your day using time expressions: Kanina, nag-almusal ako. Ngayon, nagtatrabaho ako. Mamaya, kakain ako ng hapunan. This connects time words to aspect naturally.
Calendar practice: Name the days of the week and practice: Tuwing Lunes, nag-eehersisyo ako. (Every Monday, I exercise.) Assign an activity to each day.
Time question drills: Practice the pattern Kailan...? with different verbs: Kailan ka pupunta? Kailan siya darating? Kailan ang pista?
