Existential May/Mayroon/Wala in Tagalog
May/Mayroon/Wala
Overview
The words may, mayroon, and wala form Tagalog's existential system, expressing "there is/are," "to have," and their negatives. This A1 topic is fundamental because Filipinos use these expressions dozens of times per day — from asking if something exists (May tubig ba?) to stating what they own (Mayroon akong kotse).
May and mayroon are essentially the same word in different forms. May is the short form used before nouns and verbs, while mayroon is the full form used when standing alone or at the end of a clause. Wala is their negative counterpart, meaning "there is not" or "do not have."
These are not verbs in the traditional sense — they do not conjugate for aspect. They are existential markers that work with pronouns and nouns to express existence and possession simply and efficiently.
How It Works
May (short form) — before nouns:
May + noun
May tubig ba? — Is there water? May klase ba bukas? — Is there class tomorrow?
Mayroon (full form) — with pronouns or standing alone:
Mayroon + pronoun + -ng + noun
Mayroon akong kotse. — I have a car. Mayroon ba? — Is there any? / Do you have any?
Wala (negative):
Wala + -ng + noun, or Wala + pronoun + -ng + noun
Walang tao dito. — There is no one here. Wala akong pera. — I don't have money.
May vs. Mayroon decision:
| Use May | Use Mayroon |
|---|---|
| Before a noun directly | Before a pronoun |
| May bahay sila. | Mayroon silang bahay. |
| In compound phrases | When standing alone |
| May kain at inumin. | Mayroon ba? — Mayroon. |

Common Mistakes
Using Mayroon Before a Noun Directly
- Wrong: Mayroon tubig.
- Right: May tubig. or Mayroon bang tubig?
- Why: May is the short form used directly before nouns. Mayroon needs a pronoun or ba between it and the noun.
Forgetting the Linker with Wala
- Wrong: Wala pera ako.
- Right: Wala akong pera.
- Why: The pronoun comes right after wala, and the linker -ng attaches to the pronoun before the noun.
Confusing Wala and Hindi
- Wrong: Hindi may tao dito.
- Right: Walang tao dito.
- Why: Existence is negated with wala, not hindi. Use hindi only for negating adjectives, verbs, and identity.
Practice Tips
Room inventory: Look around any room and list what is there (May mesa, may upuan, may bintana) and what is not (Walang telebisyon, walang telepono). This drills both may and wala.
Possession practice: List five things you have and five you do not: Mayroon akong telepono. Wala akong aso. This builds comfort with the pronoun + linker pattern.
Question and answer pairs: Practice asking and answering: May kape ba? — Mayroon. / May gatas ba? — Wala. These short exchanges mirror real conversations.
