Benefactive/Instrumental Focus I- Verbs in Tagalog

Pandiwang I- (Pokus sa Tagatanggap)

Overview

The i- prefix marks verbs where the ang-marked topic is the beneficiary, instrument, or thing transferred in an action. This A2 topic expands your understanding of the Tagalog focus system beyond actor and object focus. With i- verbs, you can highlight who benefits from an action, what tool is used, or what is being given or moved.

For example, Ibinigay niya ang regalo (He/She gave the gift) puts focus on the gift — the thing transferred. This contrasts with actor focus (Nagbigay siya ng regalo — He/She gave a gift, focus on the giver) and locative focus (Binigyan niya ako ng regalo — He/She gave me a gift, focus on the recipient).

The i- focus is particularly common with verbs of giving, cooking, writing, and any action done for someone's benefit. It is a natural next step after learning -um-/mag- (actor) and -in (object) focus patterns.

How It Works

Aspect formation for i- verbs:

Aspect Pattern Root: bigay (give) Root: luto (cook)
Completed i- + -in- infix ibinigay ilinuto
Incompleted i- + -in- + CV reduplication ibinibigay ilinuluto
Contemplated i- + CV reduplication ibibigay iluluto

Alternative pattern with ipag-:

Some verbs use ipag- instead of plain i-:

Aspect Pattern Root: luto (cook for)
Completed ipinag- ipinagluto
Incompleted ipinag- + CV reduplication ipinagluluto
Contemplated ipag- + CV reduplication ipagluluto

Sentence structure:

Verb + ng-pronoun (actor) + ang-noun (beneficiary/instrument/theme)

Ibinigay niya sa akin ang regalo. — He/She gave the gift to me. (focus on the gift)

Common Mistakes

Confusing I- Focus with -In Focus

  • Wrong: Using kinain when you mean "cook (something) for (someone)"
  • Right: Ipinagluto ko siya ng adobo. (I cooked adobo for him/her.)
  • Why: -In focus highlights the direct object. I- focus highlights the thing transferred or the beneficiary relationship.

Forgetting the -In- Infix in Completed Aspect

  • Wrong: Ibigay niya ang libro. (contemplated form for past)
  • Right: Ibinigay niya ang libro. (He/She gave the book.)
  • Why: The completed aspect requires the -in- infix inside the i- prefix: i-b-in-igay.

Mixing Up Ipag- and I- Forms

  • Wrong: Using ipagluto and iluto interchangeably
  • Right: Iluto mo ang isda. (Cook the fish.) vs. Ipagluto mo ako. (Cook for me.)
  • Why: Plain i- often focuses on the thing; ipag- often focuses on the beneficiary. Some verbs use one pattern, some use the other.

Practice Tips

  1. Giving practice: The most natural use of i- focus is giving: Ibigay mo sa kanya. Ibinigay ko na. Practice giving and receiving scenarios.

  2. Three-focus comparison: For one root, practice all focuses: Nagluto ako ng adobo. (I cooked adobo — actor) / Niluto ko ang adobo. (I cooked the adobo — object) / Ipinagluto ko siya. (I cooked for him/her — benefactive)

  3. Command forms: Many i- verbs are common as commands: Ibigay mo! Ilagay mo! Itapon mo! Isara mo! Practice these household commands.
