Actor Focus Mag- Verbs in Tagalog
Pandiwang Mag- (Pokus sa Tagaganap)
Overview
The mag- prefix is one of the two main ways Tagalog marks actor-focus verbs, alongside the -um- infix. As a foundational A1 topic, mag- verbs are among the first verb forms you will encounter and use daily. In actor-focus sentences, the ang-marked noun is the person performing the action.
Mag- verbs often carry a sense of deliberate, sustained, or effortful action. Compare kumain (-um-, to eat — a natural act) with nagluto (mag-, to cook — a deliberate activity). While this pattern holds for many verbs, some simply belong to the mag- class by convention, so it is best to learn each verb with its class.
Like all Tagalog verbs, mag- verbs mark aspect rather than tense. The three aspects are completed (finished action), incompleted (ongoing action), and contemplated (planned or future action). Time words like kahapon (yesterday) and bukas (tomorrow) clarify when the action happens.
How It Works
The mag- prefix changes form depending on the aspect:
| Aspect | Pattern | Root: luto (cook) | Root: aral (study) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Completed | nag- + root | nagluto | nag-aral |
| Incompleted | nag- + CV reduplication + root | nagluluto | nag-aaral |
| Contemplated | mag- + CV reduplication + root | magluluto | mag-aaral |
Steps for each aspect:
- Completed: Replace mag- with nag- and attach the root → nag-luto = nagluto
- Incompleted: Use nag- + reduplicate the first consonant-vowel of the root → nag-lu-luto = nagluluto
- Contemplated: Keep mag- + reduplicate the first CV of the root → mag-lu-luto = magluluto
Hyphen note: When the root starts with a vowel, a hyphen is used: mag-aral, nag-aral, mag-aaral.
Sentence structure (actor focus):
Verb + ang-noun (actor/topic) + ng-noun (object)
Nagluto si Maria ng adobo. — Maria cooked adobo.

Common Mistakes
Forgetting to Change Mag- to Nag- for Completed Aspect
- Wrong: Magluto siya kahapon. (using contemplated form for past)
- Right: Nagluto siya kahapon. (He/She cooked yesterday.)
- Why: The completed aspect always uses nag-, not mag-.
Missing the CV Reduplication
- Wrong: Nagluto ako ngayon. (completed form for ongoing action)
- Right: Nagluluto ako ngayon. (I am cooking now.)
- Why: The incompleted aspect requires reduplicating the first consonant-vowel syllable of the root.
Confusing Mag- and -Um- Verb Classes
- Wrong: Kumluto siya. (trying to use -um- with a mag- root)
- Right: Nagluto siya. (He/She cooked.)
- Why: Most verbs belong to one class or the other. Luto is a mag- verb, so it takes nag-/nagluluto/magluluto.
Omitting the Hyphen with Vowel-Initial Roots
- Wrong: Magaral or nagaral
- Right: Mag-aral, nag-aral
- Why: The hyphen prevents confusion and is required when the root starts with a vowel.
Practice Tips
Start with common verbs: Practice the three aspects of everyday mag- verbs like magluto (cook), mag-aral (study), maglinis (clean), maglaro (play), and magtrabaho (work). Say all three forms aloud until they feel automatic.
Listen for the nag-/mag- pattern: When watching Filipino shows or listening to conversations, count how many mag- verbs you hear. Notice whether the speaker uses the completed, incompleted, or contemplated form and what time word accompanies it.
Make daily logs: Write three sentences about your day using mag- verbs — one completed action, one you are currently doing, and one you plan to do. This drills all three aspects naturally.
