In Brief
Thai correlative constructions use two matching parts to connect parallel ideas. ยิ่ง...ยิ่ง... means “the more...the more...,” ทั้ง...ทั้ง... means “both...and...,” ไม่เพียงแต่...แต่ยัง... means “not only...but also...,” and ไม่...ก็... can present alternatives like “either...or....” Keep the two linked parts grammatically parallel whenever possible.
Overview
A correlative construction is a pair of words or phrases that work together across two parts of a sentence. English has pairs such as “both...and” and “not only...but also.” Thai uses comparable pairings, but it does not always divide the sentence at exactly the same point as English. Learning the whole frame, rather than translating each marker separately, produces much more natural sentences.
At B2, these patterns help you connect information precisely: two qualities may apply at once, one change may grow with another, an additional point may receive special emphasis, or two possibilities may be offered. They occur in conversation, news, advertising, presentations, and formal writing. The underlying comparison skills from A2 are especially useful with ยิ่ง...ยิ่ง..., because this pattern compares changing degrees rather than two fixed objects.
Thai normally has no grammatical inflection here: verbs and adjectives do not change form to agree with a subject. Word order and the paired markers carry the relationship. A clause (a group of words expressing an event or state) may appear after each marker, or the markers may connect shorter words and phrases.
How It Works
ยิ่ง...ยิ่ง...: linked increases or decreases
ยิ่ง X ยิ่ง Y states that as X changes in degree, Y changes along with it. Depending on context, English may use “the more...the more,” “the less...the less,” or a mixed pattern such as “the more...the less.” Thai keeps ยิ่ง in both positions; the meaning of the verbs or adjectives tells you the direction of change.
| Pattern | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ยิ่ง + clause X + ยิ่ง + clause Y | The more X, the more Y | ยิ่งฝึกยิ่งคล่อง |
| noun/topic + ยิ่ง + X + ยิ่ง + Y | As for the topic, the more X, the more Y | ภาษาไทยยิ่งเรียนยิ่งสนุก |
| ยิ่ง + X + ก็ยิ่ง + Y | The more X, the more Y; the link is made explicit | ยิ่งคิดก็ยิ่งกังวล |
The optional ก็ before the second ยิ่ง is common and makes the consequence-like link easy to hear. It does not change the core meaning. Subjects can be stated where needed: ยิ่งเรารีบ เราก็ยิ่งทำผิด means “The more we rush, the more mistakes we make.” When the subject is obvious, Thai often omits it.
A negative inside either half reverses the direction naturally: ยิ่งไม่ใช้ ยิ่งลืม literally links “not using” with “forgetting,” giving “The less you use it, the more you forget.” Do not try to replace the first ยิ่ง with a separate Thai word for “less.”
ทั้ง...ทั้ง...: both qualities, actions, or people
ทั้ง X ทั้ง Y presents X and Y as jointly true. The two elements should be parallel: adjective with adjective, verb phrase with verb phrase, or noun phrase with noun phrase.
| Connected elements | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| qualities | ทั้ง + adjective + ทั้ง + adjective | ทั้งสวยทั้งถูก |
| actions | ทั้ง + verb phrase + ทั้ง + verb phrase | เขาทั้งทำงานทั้งเรียน |
| nouns or participants | ทั้ง + noun + ทั้ง + noun | ทั้งครูทั้งนักเรียนเห็นด้วย |
Thai also has a different use of ทั้ง meaning “all” or “the whole,” as in ทั้งวัน (“all day”) and ทั้งสามคน (“all three people”). Do not assume that every ทั้ง begins a “both...and” pair. In the correlative pattern, the repeated markers introduce matched elements.
For a simple list, และ (“and”) may be enough. Repeated ทั้ง stresses that both points apply: ร้านนี้สวยและถูก simply says that the shop is beautiful and cheap; ร้านนี้ทั้งสวยทั้งถูก highlights the attractive combination.
ไม่เพียงแต่...แต่ยัง...: adding an emphatic second point
The full frame is:
ไม่เพียงแต่ X แต่ยัง Y (อีกด้วย)
It means “not only X, but also Y.” The first half rejects the idea that X is the whole story; the second adds Y as noteworthy information. อีกด้วย (“as well/in addition”) may close the sentence and strengthen its balanced, explicit feel.
Several closely related forms occur:
| Form | Typical effect |
|---|---|
| ไม่เพียงแต่ X แต่ยัง Y | full, clear standard pattern |
| ไม่เพียง X แต่ยัง Y | slightly shorter variant |
| ไม่ใช่แค่ X แต่ยัง Y | conversational “not just X, but also Y” |
| ไม่เพียงแต่ X แต่ยัง Y อีกด้วย | emphatic and common in careful writing or speech |
Keep X and Y structurally comparable. For example, เขาไม่เพียงแต่พูดภาษาไทยได้ แต่ยังอ่านได้คล่องอีกด้วย pairs two verb phrases: being able to speak and being able to read fluently.
ไม่...ก็...: alternatives, with context doing important work
ไม่ X ก็ Y can present Y as the alternative if X does not apply. With time expressions, people, places, and other choices, it often corresponds naturally to “either X or Y”:
- ไม่วันเสาร์ก็วันอาทิตย์ — either Saturday or Sunday
- ไม่คุณก็ผมต้องไป — either you or I have to go
The first ไม่ is also the ordinary negator “not,” so the same surface pattern can express a condition-like sequence: ไม่รีบก็สาย is more naturally “If you don’t hurry, you’ll be late” than “Either hurry or be late.” Meaning depends on what X and Y are and on the situation.
For openly optional actions, Thai often uses X ก็ได้ Y ก็ได้ (“X is fine; Y is fine”) or จะ X หรือ Y ก็ได้ (“either X or Y is fine”). These are often clearer than forcing ไม่...ก็... into every English “either...or” sentence.
Examples in Context
| Thai | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| ยิ่งเรียนยิ่งเก่ง | The more you study, the better you become. | Core ยิ่ง...ยิ่ง pattern |
| ยิ่งฟังก็ยิ่งเข้าใจ | The more I listen, the more I understand. | ก็ explicitly links the second half |
| ยิ่งอากาศร้อน คนก็ยิ่งใช้ไฟมาก | The hotter the weather gets, the more electricity people use. | Separate subjects are stated |
| ยิ่งไม่พูดก็ยิ่งเข้าใจผิด | The less we talk, the more we misunderstand each other. | Negation creates a “less...more” reading |
| โรงแรมนี้ทั้งสะอาดทั้งเงียบ | This hotel is both clean and quiet. | Two adjectives |
| เธอทั้งทำงานทั้งเรียนต่อ | She both works and continues her studies. | Two verb phrases |
| ทั้งผู้จัดการทั้งพนักงานมาประชุม | Both the manager and the employees came to the meeting. | Two participant groups |
| เขาไม่เพียงแต่เก่งแต่ยังขยัน | He is not only talented but also diligent. | Two qualities |
| โครงการนี้ไม่เพียงช่วยประหยัดเงิน แต่ยังลดขยะอีกด้วย | This project not only saves money but also reduces waste. | Full emphatic form |
| เธอไม่ใช่แค่ร้องเพลงเก่ง แต่ยังแต่งเพลงเองด้วย | She is not just a good singer; she also writes her own songs. | Conversational variant |
| เราจะไปไม่วันเสาร์ก็วันอาทิตย์ | We’ll go either Saturday or Sunday. | Alternatives between time expressions |
| ไม่คุณก็ผมต้องรับผิดชอบเรื่องนี้ | Either you or I must take responsibility for this. | Alternatives between people |
| ไม่ไปก็อยู่ | Either go or stay. | A compact contrast; context determines the intended alternatives |
| ไม่รีบก็ไม่ทันรถไฟ | If we don’t hurry, we won’t catch the train. | Formally similar, but condition-like in meaning |
Common Mistakes
Using only one half of ยิ่ง...ยิ่ง...
- Wrong: ยิ่งเรียน เก่งขึ้น
- Right: ยิ่งเรียนยิ่งเก่งขึ้น
- Why: In the full correlative frame, repeat ยิ่ง before the result that changes with the first part. English repeats “the,” and Thai likewise signals both sides.
Treating ยิ่ง as if it always meant “more” by itself
- Wrong: ยิ่งไม่ฝึก น้อยยิ่งจำ for “The less you practise, the less you remember.”
- Right: ยิ่งไม่ฝึกก็ยิ่งจำได้น้อย
- Why: Thai retains ยิ่ง...ยิ่ง.... Negation and words such as น้อย show whether the quantity rises or falls.
Joining elements that are not parallel
- Awkward: ร้านนี้ทั้งสวยทั้งราคาไม่แพงและบริการดี
- Better: ร้านนี้ทั้งสวย ทั้งราคาไม่แพง และบริการก็ดี
- Why: A long, uneven series is hard to process. Keep the paired pieces similar, then add a third point separately if needed.
Mixing up “both” and “all”
- Wrong for “both people”: ทั้งคนมาแล้ว
- Right: ทั้งสองคนมาแล้ว (“Both people have arrived”) or ทั้งคุณทั้งผมมาแล้ว (“Both you and I have arrived”)
- Why: ทั้ง + number/classifier phrase can mean “all/both of that set,” while ทั้ง X ทั้ง Y names two matched items.
Omitting the additive marker in the formal pattern
- Incomplete: เขาไม่เพียงแต่เก่ง เขาขยัน
- Right: เขาไม่เพียงแต่เก่ง แต่ยังขยัน
- Why: แต่ยัง clearly introduces the additional, emphasized point. In casual speech other frames are possible, but do not leave a memorized formal pair unfinished.
Reading every ไม่...ก็... as “either...or”
- Misreading: ไม่กินก็หิว = “Either eat or be hungry.”
- Natural reading: ไม่กินก็หิว = “If you don’t eat, you’ll be hungry.”
- Why: ไม่ still negates the following expression. Decide whether the sentence names two alternatives or describes what follows if the first action does not happen.
Usage Notes
ทั้ง...ทั้ง... is natural in both speech and writing. It often has a positive promotional rhythm—ทั้งดีทั้งคุ้ม (“both good and good value”)—but it can equally combine negative points, as in ทั้งแพงทั้งช้า (“both expensive and slow”). Tone comes from the paired words, not from the construction itself.
ไม่เพียงแต่...แต่ยัง... sounds especially at home in planned explanations, presentations, journalism, and persuasive writing. In everyday conversation, ไม่ใช่แค่...แต่ยัง... often feels lighter. The longer ending อีกด้วย is useful for emphasis, but it is not obligatory whenever แต่ยัง already makes the relationship clear.
Thai writing normally places spaces between phrases or clauses, not between every word. In long correlative sentences, spacing can help readers see the two halves: ยิ่งข้อมูลชัดเจน คนอ่านก็ยิ่งตัดสินใจง่ายขึ้น. Punctuation is usually less central than in English; the paired markers themselves organize the sentence.
With ไม่...ก็..., context is essential. Use it confidently for conventional alternatives such as days, people, or likely options. When both choices are freely acceptable, ...ก็ได้...ก็ได้ or หรือ (“or”) may communicate the choice more transparently.
Beyond the Basics
Correlative pairs can connect full clauses with different subjects. Compare ยิ่งฝึกยิ่งเก่ง (“The more [you] practise, the better [you] become”) with ยิ่งฝนตก รถก็ยิ่งติด (“The more it rains, the worse the traffic gets”). Repeating a noun or pronoun is not required, but stating it prevents ambiguity when the participants change.
Writers also expand these constructions into lists. ทั้ง X ทั้ง Y และ Z can work when X and Y form a close pair and Z is an additional point. If all three have equal weight, repeating ทั้ง before each item is possible for rhetorical emphasis, but a simple list may sound cleaner. Parallel wording matters more than mechanically repeating markers.
The patterns can overlap with other clause links. ยิ่ง...ก็ยิ่ง... contains ก็, which marks the second half as following from the first. Yet it is not an ordinary ถ้า...ก็... (“if...then”) condition: ยิ่ง...ยิ่ง... describes a graded relationship, where changes happen together. Similarly, ไม่...ก็... may resemble a condition even when speakers use it to narrow down likely options. Advanced comprehension depends on the meaning of the entire sentence, not just on spotting two particles.
English speakers should be particularly careful with literal symmetry. English “not only” can be moved to the beginning and trigger unusual word order (“Not only did he call...”); Thai does not copy that inversion. Use ordinary Thai order after ไม่เพียงแต่. Conversely, English “either...or” does not contain a negative, whereas Thai ไม่...ก็... begins with the regular negative marker. Translating word by word therefore obscures how the Thai frame works.
Practice Tips
- Build parallel pairs. Choose one adjective and add a second after ทั้ง: ทั้งสะดวกทั้งเร็ว. Then do the same with two actions and two noun phrases.
- Make change chains. Start with ยิ่งฝึกยิ่งคล่อง, then replace one half at a time: ยิ่งฝึกบ่อยยิ่งจำได้ดี. Include examples where one result decreases, such as ยิ่งแพงยิ่งขายยาก.
- Classify ไม่...ก็... from context. When you hear or read one, ask whether it names alternatives or means “if not X, then Y.” Rewrite genuine free choices with หรือ or ก็ได้ to compare the nuance.
