Nominalization in Swedish

Nominalisering

Overview

Nominalization is the process of creating nouns from verbs or adjectives. In Swedish, this is a highly productive word-formation strategy that plays a central role in formal and academic writing. Suffixes like -ning (from verbs), -else (from verbs), and -het (from adjectives) transform actions and qualities into abstract nouns: förbättra (to improve) becomes förbättring (improvement), skön (beautiful) becomes skönhet (beauty).

At the C1 level, understanding nominalization is essential for two reasons. First, formal Swedish relies heavily on nominal style -- using nouns where everyday speech would use verbs. Being able to both decode and produce these forms is a hallmark of advanced proficiency. Second, many Swedish abstract nouns that you encounter in newspapers, academic texts, and official documents are nominalizations, and recognizing their structure helps you understand their meaning even when they are unfamiliar.

Nominalization is closely linked to formal written style. While you can and should use some nominalizations in everyday Swedish, the dense nominal style characteristic of official documents is a specific register skill that C1 learners need to develop.

How It Works

Common Nominalization Suffixes from Verbs

Suffix Base Nominalization English
-ning förbättra (improve) förbättring improvement
-ning utveckla (develop) utveckling development
-ning utbilda (educate) utbildning education
-ning betyda (mean) betydningbetydelse meaning
-an börja (begin) början the beginning
-ande/-ende bete sig (behave) beteende behavior
-else förstå (understand) förståelse understanding
-else uppleva (experience) upplevelse experience

The -ning suffix is by far the most productive and can be applied to most verbs. All -ning words are en-words.

Common Nominalization Suffixes from Adjectives

Suffix Base Nominalization English
-het skön (beautiful) skönhet beauty
-het fri (free) frihet freedom
-het möjlig (possible) möjlighet possibility
-het svår (difficult) svårighet difficulty
-dom sjuk (sick) sjukdom illness
-dom vis (wise) visdom wisdom

All -het words are en-words. -dom words are also en-words.

Zero-Derivation (Conversion)

Some verbs become nouns without any suffix change:

Verb Noun English
besluta (decide) beslut (ett) decision
kräva (demand) krav (ett) demand
börja (begin) börjabörjan beginning

Nominal vs. Verbal Style

Verbal (Everyday) Nominal (Formal)
Vi förbättrade systemet. Förbättringen av systemet genomfördes.
Utvecklingen går snabbt. (already nominal)
Man bestämde att... Beslutet fattades att...
De utbildar personal. Utbildningen av personal pågår.
Vi analyserade data. Analysen av data visade att...

Prepositions with Nominalizations

When a nominalization replaces a verb, the object typically becomes a prepositional phrase with av:

Verbal Nominal
förbättra systemet förbättringen av systemet
utveckla produkten utvecklingen av produkten
analysera resultaten analysen av resultaten

Examples in Context

Swedish English Note
Förbättringen av systemet. The improvement of the system. -ning from förbättra
Beslutet fattades. The decision was made. Zero-derivation from besluta
Utvecklingen går snabbt. The development is fast. -ning from utveckla
Skönheten i naturen. The beauty in nature. -het from skön
Utbildningen börjar i höst. The education starts in autumn. -ning from utbilda
Möjligheten att resa. The possibility to travel. -het from möjlig
Förståelsen för problemet växer. Understanding of the problem is growing. -else from förstå
Upplevelsen var fantastisk. The experience was fantastic. -else from uppleva

Beteendet var oacceptabelt. The behavior was unacceptable. -ende from bete sig
Analysen visade tydliga resultat. The analysis showed clear results. Zero-derivation
Sjukdomen spred sig snabbt. The illness spread quickly. -dom from sjuk

Common Mistakes

Wrong: förbättningen (wrong suffix form) Right: förbättringen Why: The verb förbättra nominalizes to förbättring, not förbättning. The stem must be identified correctly before adding -ning.

Wrong: Treating -ning words as ett-words: ett förbättring Right: en förbättring Why: All -ning nominalizations are en-words. No exceptions.

Wrong: Overusing nominalization in contexts that call for clear, direct language. Right: Use verbal style when writing informally or when clarity is paramount. Why: Dense nominal style can make text hard to read. The Swedish plain language movement (klarspråk) actively discourages excessive nominalization in public communication.

Wrong: Betydningen av ordet... (incorrect form) Right: Betydelsen av ordet... Why: Some verbs use -else rather than -ning. Betyda becomes betydelse, not betydning. These must be learned individually.

Wrong: Fridom (wrong suffix for adjective) Right: Frihet Why: Fri takes the -het suffix, not -dom. While both suffixes create nouns from adjectives, they are not interchangeable. Which suffix a word takes must be memorized.

Usage Notes

Nominalization is prominent in formal registers: academic writing, legal texts, government reports, and business communication. In these contexts, a nominal style conveys authority, objectivity, and precision.

In everyday Swedish, common nominalizations like utbildning (education), erfarenhet (experience), and möjlighet (possibility) are perfectly natural and frequent. It is the dense chaining of nominalizations that marks formal register.

Sweden's klarspråk movement has had a real impact. Government agencies are encouraged to prefer verbal style over nominal style for accessibility. A sentence like Genomförandet av implementeringen av förbättringen... is now considered poor style even in official contexts.

There is no significant regional variation in how nominalizations are formed. Finland-Swedish uses the same suffixes and patterns.

Practice Tips

  1. Build suffix families. Take the suffixes -ning, -het, and -else and list as many words as you can for each. Then check a dictionary to verify the correct forms. This builds your productive vocabulary of abstract nouns.

  2. Transform between styles. Take a paragraph of formal Swedish and rewrite it in verbal style, and vice versa. This exercise develops your ability to modulate register and makes you more aware of how nominalization works.

  3. Read academic abstracts. Swedish university thesis abstracts (available at DiVA portal) are full of nominalizations. Reading these short texts helps you absorb the patterns in a manageable format.
