Advanced Prepositional Usage in Swedish

Avancerade Prepositionsuttryck

This article is part of the Swedish grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

Overview

At the C1 level, you move beyond basic prepositions like i, , and till and begin mastering the complex prepositional phrases that are essential for precise, nuanced expression. Swedish has a rich inventory of multi-word prepositional expressions -- i förhållande till (in relation to), i samband med (in connection with), med tanke på (considering/with a view to) -- that function as sophisticated connectors in both speech and writing.

These expressions are particularly important in academic, professional, and formal contexts, where they serve as the glue that holds complex arguments together. While basic prepositions suffice for everyday communication, advanced prepositional phrases are what allow you to express relationships of comparison, concession, condition, and purpose with precision.

Many of these expressions have close English equivalents, which can be helpful. However, the specific preposition choices often differ from English, and direct translation frequently leads to errors. Learning these as complete units -- rather than trying to construct them from individual words -- is the most effective approach.

How It Works

Complex Prepositional Phrases

Swedish English Category
i förhållande till in relation to Comparison
i samband med in connection with Association
med tanke på considering / with a view to Consideration
trots despite Concession
på grund av because of / due to Cause
med hänsyn till with regard to Consideration
i enlighet med in accordance with Conformity
i stället för instead of Replacement
till skillnad från unlike / in contrast to Contrast
i fråga om regarding / in terms of Topic
med avseende på with respect to Reference
till följd av as a result of Consequence

Structure Patterns

Most complex prepositions follow one of these patterns:

Pattern Examples
preposition + noun + preposition i samband med, i förhållande till, med tanke på
preposition + noun + av på grund av, till följd av
till + noun + från till skillnad från

Trots vs. Trots att

Trots (despite) takes a noun phrase; trots att (despite the fact that) introduces a clause:

Construction Example English
trots + noun Trots regnet gick vi ut. Despite the rain we went out.
trots att + clause Trots att det regnade, gick vi ut. Despite the fact that it was raining, we went out.

This pattern applies to several expressions:

Noun phrase Clause
på grund av + noun på grund av att + clause
tack vare + noun tack vare att + clause
i stället för + noun i stället för att + infinitive

Prepositions That Differ from English

Swedish English Common Error
beroende depending on Using av instead of
intresserad av interested in Using i instead of av
nöjd med satisfied with Correct match, but learners often guess wrong
rädd för afraid of Using av instead of för
bra good at Using i instead of
gift med married to Using till instead of med

Common Mistakes

Wrong: I förhållande med förra året... Right: I förhållande till förra året... Why: The fixed expression is i förhållande till, not med. These multi-word prepositions must be learned as complete units.

Wrong: På grund utav stormen... (hypercorrect or dialectal) Right: På grund av stormen... Why: While utav exists in some dialects and informal speech, the standard form is av.

Wrong: Trots att regnet gick vi ut. (mixing structures) Right: Trots regnet gick vi ut. or Trots att det regnade, gick vi ut. Why: Trots takes a noun phrase directly. Trots att introduces a full clause with a subject and verb. Do not combine them.

Wrong: Med tanke i framtiden... Right: Med tanke på framtiden... Why: The fixed expression is med tanke på. The preposition cannot be replaced.

Wrong: I stället av kaffe... Right: I stället för kaffe... Why: The correct expression is i stället för, not i stället av.

Usage Notes

Complex prepositional phrases span all registers, but some are more formal than others:

Register Examples
Everyday på grund av, i stället för, tack vare, trots
Formal i enlighet med, med hänsyn till, med avseende på
Very formal/legal oaktat, beträffande, avseende

In academic writing, these phrases are essential for structuring arguments: i förhållande till for comparisons, till följd av for causation, till skillnad från for contrasts. Using them correctly signals academic competence.

There is no significant regional variation in how these prepositional phrases are used, though Finland-Swedish may favor slightly different combinations in administrative contexts.

These expressions are tested at B2 for recognition and at C1 for active, accurate production.

Practice Tips

  1. Learn as chunks. Treat complex prepositions as single vocabulary items, not as combinations of words. Flashcard the whole phrase with its English equivalent and a sample sentence.

  2. Map to English equivalents. Create a personal reference table mapping Swedish complex prepositions to their English counterparts. Where the prepositions differ (intresserad av vs. "interested in"), highlight the mismatch.

  3. Use in writing exercises. When practicing essay writing, deliberately incorporate at least three complex prepositional phrases per paragraph. This forces you to find natural opportunities to use them and builds fluency.
