Negation with Inte in Swedish
Negation med Inte
Overview
Negation in Swedish is refreshingly straightforward: you add the word inte (not) to make a sentence negative. There is no need for auxiliary verbs like English "do/does/did" — you simply place inte in the right position and the sentence becomes negative.
The key thing to learn at the A1 level is that inte goes in different positions depending on whether you are in a main clause or a subordinate clause. In main clauses, inte comes after the verb. In subordinate clauses, inte comes before the verb. This distinction is fundamental to Swedish and affects how every negative sentence is constructed.
This placement rule extends beyond inte to other sentence adverbs like alltid (always), aldrig (never), ofta (often), and redan (already). Once you master the pattern with inte, you will automatically know where to place all these other adverbs too.
How It Works
Main Clause: Inte After the Verb
In a main clause (a standalone sentence), inte is placed directly after the conjugated verb:
| Subject | Verb | Inte | Rest | English |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jag | förstår | inte. | I don't understand. | |
| Hon | kommer | inte | idag. | She isn't coming today. |
| Vi | har | inte | tid. | We don't have time. |
| Det | är | inte | svårt. | It's not difficult. |
| Han | dricker | inte | kaffe. | He doesn't drink coffee. |
With V2 Inversion
When the sentence begins with something other than the subject, inte still comes after the verb (and after the subject):
| Position 1 | Verb | Subject | Inte | Rest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Idag | kommer | hon | inte. | |
| Det | vet | jag | inte. | |
| Kaffe | dricker | han | inte. |
Subordinate Clause: Inte Before the Verb
In subordinate clauses (after words like att, om, när, eftersom, för att), inte moves to before the verb:
| Conjunction | Subject | Inte | Verb | Rest | English |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ...att | jag | inte | förstår. | ...that I don't understand. | |
| ...om | du | inte | vill | komma. | ...if you don't want to come. |
| ...när | hon | inte | är | hemma. | ...when she isn't home. |
| ...för att | vi | inte | har | tid. | ...because we don't have time. |
The BIFF Rule
A helpful mnemonic for remembering this pattern is BIFF: Bisats Inte Före Finit verb — in subordinate clauses (bisats), inte comes before (före) the finite verb.
| Clause type | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Main clause | Verb + inte | Jag dricker inte te. |
| Subordinate clause | Inte + verb | ...att jag inte dricker te. |
Other Negative Words
Swedish has additional negative expressions that work similarly:
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| inte | not | Jag vet inte. (I don't know.) |
| aldrig | never | Jag dricker aldrig kaffe. (I never drink coffee.) |
| ingen/inget/inga | no/none | Jag har inga pengar. (I have no money.) |
| ingenting / inget | nothing | Jag ser ingenting. (I see nothing.) |
| ingen | nobody | Ingen vet. (Nobody knows.) |
| varken...eller | neither...nor | Varken du eller jag. (Neither you nor I.) |

Common Mistakes
Placing inte before the verb in main clauses
- Wrong: Jag inte förstår.
- Right: Jag förstår inte.
- Why: In main clauses, inte always comes after the conjugated verb. The "before the verb" position is only for subordinate clauses.
Using "do not" structure
- Wrong: Jag gör inte förstår. (translating "I do not understand")
- Right: Jag förstår inte.
- Why: Swedish does not use an auxiliary "do" for negation. Simply add inte after the main verb.
Wrong position in subordinate clauses
- Wrong: ...att jag förstår inte.
- Right: ...att jag inte förstår.
- Why: In subordinate clauses, inte must come before the verb. This is the opposite of the main clause pattern.
Forgetting inte with modal verbs
- Wrong: Jag kan inte att simma. or Jag kan simma inte.
- Right: Jag kan inte simma.
- Why: With modal verbs, inte goes between the modal and the infinitive: kan + inte + simma.
Usage Notes
Inte is used in all registers of Swedish, from casual conversation to formal writing. There is no informal or slang alternative — inte is universal.
In spoken Swedish, inte is often reduced to 'nte or even just a quick nasal sound in fast speech, but in standard pronunciation and writing, the full form is always used.
The word ej is a formal/written synonym for inte that you may see on signs (Ej ingång = No entry) and in legal or administrative texts, but it is not used in normal conversation.
Double negation does not exist in standard Swedish. You would not say Jag har inte inga pengar — instead, use either Jag har inte pengar or Jag har inga pengar.
Practice Tips
Convert positive sentences to negative. Take any sentence you know and add inte after the verb: Jag talar svenska → Jag talar inte svenska. Hon bor i Stockholm → Hon bor inte i Stockholm.
Practice the main/subordinate switch. Say a main clause, then embed it in a subordinate clause: Jag förstår inte → ...att jag inte förstår. This drills the position change.
Listen for inte in Swedish media. When watching Swedish shows, notice where inte falls in relation to the verb. This passive reinforcement helps internalize the pattern.
