Time Expressions in Russian

Overview

Telling time and expressing temporal concepts in Russian involves specific constructions that combine numbers, nouns, and prepositions in ways that differ from English. At the A1 level, learners need to master clock time, days of the week, months, and seasons to handle basic scheduling, appointments, and daily conversation.

Russian uses the question Который час? (What time is it?) or Сколько времени? (How much time?) for asking the time. Clock time uses cardinal numbers with the word час (hour) and its case-appropriate forms. Days and months require specific prepositions: в + accusative for days and на + prepositional for "this/next week."

Seasons use different prepositions depending on whether you mean "in" (during) a season: весной (in spring), летом (in summer), осенью (in autumn), зимой (in winter) -- these are instrumental case forms used adverbially. This variety of constructions makes time expressions a rich area for practicing multiple grammar points simultaneously.

How It Works

Clock Time

Time Russian Structure
1:00 час Just час (no один)
2:00 два часа 2-4 + gen. sg.
5:00 пять часов 5-12 + gen. pl.
"at" + time в + accusative в три часа (at 3:00)

Days of the Week

Day Russian "On [day]"
Monday понедельник в понедельник
Tuesday вторник во вторник
Wednesday среда в среду
Thursday четверг в четверг
Friday пятница в пятницу
Saturday суббота в субботу
Sunday воскресенье в воскресенье

Months and Seasons

Months use в + prepositional: в январе, в феврале, в марте...

Seasons use instrumental case as adverbs: весной, летом, осенью, зимой.

Russian English Note

в январе, весной in January, in spring Prep. for months, instr. for seasons
Который час? What time is it? Standard time question
Сейчас половина второго. It's half past one. Lit: half of the second (hour)

Утром я работаю. In the morning I work. Instrumental for time of day
Вчера, сегодня, завтра Yesterday, today, tomorrow Key time adverbs
Каждый день Every day Frequency expression

Common Mistakes

Using nominative for "at" time

  • Wrong: в три час
  • Right: в три часа
  • Why: The preposition в for clock time takes the accusative, and час requires proper number agreement.

Confusing prepositions for time periods

  • Wrong: на январе or в весной
  • Right: в январе (prep. case) and весной (instrumental, no preposition)
  • Why: Months use в + prepositional, but seasons are expressed with instrumental case adverbs.

Direct translation of English time patterns

  • Wrong: Это есть пять часов (translating "It is five o'clock")
  • Right: Сейчас пять часов. (Now [it is] five o'clock.)
  • Why: Russian uses сейчас (now) rather than a literal "it is" construction.

Practice Tips

  • Practice telling the time at random moments throughout the day in Russian. Check a clock and say the time aloud.
  • Create a weekly schedule in Russian using days, times, and activities: В понедельник в девять часов я работаю.
