Advanced Time Expressions in Russian

Overview

Beyond basic clock time and days of the week, Russian has a rich set of temporal prepositions and constructions that express duration, deadlines, intervals, and temporal relationships. At the B1 level, these expressions are essential for discussing schedules, narrating events, and expressing time-related conditions with precision.

The key prepositions to master are через + accusative (in/after a period), за + accusative (within a period), с ... до + genitive (from ... until), перед + instrumental (before), после + genitive (after), and в течение + genitive (during/over the course of). Each preposition requires a specific case and carries a distinct temporal meaning.

These constructions are not interchangeable: через час means "in an hour" (from now), за час means "within an hour" (the action took one hour to complete), and в течение часа means "during the course of an hour." Understanding these distinctions is critical for precise temporal communication.

How It Works

Temporal Prepositions

Preposition Case Meaning Example
через Accusative in/after (from now) через час (in an hour)
за Accusative within (completion time) за неделю (within a week)
с ... до Genitive from ... until с утра до вечера
перед Instrumental before перед обедом (before lunch)
после Genitive after после работы (after work)
в течение Genitive during, over the course of в течение года
назад (after time word) ago два дня назад (two days ago)

Через vs. За

Через + acc За + acc
"In" (future point) "Within" (duration to complete)
Я вернусь через час. Он сделал это за час.
I'll be back in an hour. He did it within an hour.

Duration Expressions

Pattern Example Meaning
Accusative (no preposition) Я ждал час. I waited for an hour.
На + accusative Я приехал на неделю. I came for a week.
За + accusative Он выучил за месяц. He learned it in a month.

Examples in Context

Russian English Note
Я вернусь через час. I'll be back in an hour. Future point
Он сделал это за неделю. He did it within a week. Completion time
С утра до вечера. From morning until evening. Range
В течение года я учился. During the year I studied. Duration
После работы я отдыхаю. After work I rest. After + genitive
Перед сном я читаю. Before bed I read. Before + instrumental
Два дня назад. Two days ago. Past point
Я приехал на два дня. I came for two days. Intended duration
Мы ждали два часа. We waited for two hours. Duration (no prep)
Через три дня будет экзамен. The exam is in three days. Future point

Common Mistakes

Confusing через and за

  • Wrong: Я сделал это через час. (when meaning "I did it within an hour")
  • Right: Я сделал это за час.
  • Why: Через points to a future moment; за indicates the time taken to complete something.

Using wrong case after temporal prepositions

  • Wrong: после работу (accusative after после)
  • Right: после работы (genitive after после)
  • Why: Each preposition requires a specific case: после + genitive, перед + instrumental, через + accusative.

Omitting preposition for intended duration

  • Wrong: Я приехал два дня. (how long I've been here vs. intended stay)
  • Right: Я приехал на два дня. (I came for two days -- intended)
  • Why: На + accusative expresses the intended duration of a visit; bare accusative expresses how long an action lasted.

Practice Tips

  • Create a timeline of your week using different temporal prepositions: через, после, перед, в течение.
  • Practice the через/за contrast with concrete examples from your life: Я приеду через час vs. Я сделал это за час.
