Numeral Categories in Polish

Overview

Beyond basic cardinal and ordinal numbers, Polish has several additional numeral categories: collective numerals (dwoje, troje), multiplicative expressions (dwa razy, trzy razy), fractional numerals (pół, ćwierć), and indefinite quantifiers (kilka, wiele, parę). At the B2 level, these expand your ability to express quantities precisely and naturally.

Collective numerals (dwoje, troje, czworo) are used with mixed-gender groups, children, and pluralia tantum nouns (nouns that only exist in plural form, like drzwi -- door, okulary -- glasses). They take the genitive case and have their own declension patterns.

Indefinite quantifiers like kilka (several), wiele (many), and parę (a few) follow the same number-noun agreement rules as higher cardinals (taking genitive plural).

How It Works

Collective numerals

Number Collective Used with
2 dwoje mixed gender, children, pluralia tantum
3 troje same
4 czworo same
5 pięcioro same

Usage: collective + genitive

dwoje dzieci (two children), troje drzwi (three doors)

Indefinite quantifiers

Polish English Case governed
kilka several genitive plural
wiele / dużo many/much genitive plural
parę a few genitive plural
trochę a little genitive singular
mało few/little genitive

Examples in Context

Polish English Note
dwoje drzwi two doors (pluralia tantum) Collective
trzy razy dziennie three times a day Multiplicative
pół godziny half an hour Fractional
kilka osób several people Indefinite + gen. pl.
wiele lat temu many years ago Indefinite + gen. pl.
dwoje dzieci two children Collective
parę minut a few minutes Indefinite
ćwierć kilo quarter kilo Fractional
czworo rodzeństwa four siblings Collective
trochę mleka a little milk Partitive genitive

Common Mistakes

Using cardinal instead of collective for pluralia tantum

  • Wrong: dwa drzwi
  • Right: dwoje drzwi
  • Why: Pluralia tantum nouns require collective numerals, not regular cardinals.

Wrong case after indefinite quantifiers

  • Wrong: kilka osoby
  • Right: kilka osób
  • Why: Indefinite quantifiers take genitive plural, just like numbers 5+.

Using collective for same-gender groups

  • Wrong: dwoje mężczyzn (two men)
  • Right: dwóch mężczyzn or dwaj mężczyźni
  • Why: Collective numerals are for mixed-gender groups and specific noun categories, not for same-gender groups of adults.

Usage Notes

Collective numerals are required with pluralia tantum in all registers. For mixed-gender groups, both collective and cardinal forms may be acceptable depending on context. Kilka and parę are interchangeable in casual speech; kilka is slightly more formal.

Practice Tips

  1. Identify pluralia tantum nouns in Polish (drzwi, okulary, nożyczki, spodnie) and practice counting them with collective numerals.
  2. Practice indefinite quantifiers in shopping contexts: Poproszę trochę sera. Kilka jabłek, proszę.
  3. Use multiplicative expressions to describe habits: Dwa razy w tygodniu. Trzy razy dziennie.
