Indirect Speech in Polish

Overview

Indirect (reported) speech conveys what someone said without quoting them directly. Polish indirect speech is simpler than English in one key way: tense does not shift. If someone said "I am tired" (Jestem zmęczona), the report is Powiedziała, że jest zmęczona -- the tense stays present. At the B2 level, mastering indirect speech is important for narration, journalism, and academic writing.

Statements are reported with że (that), questions with czy (whether/if) for yes/no questions or the original question word for information questions, and commands/requests with żeby + past form.

The lack of tense backshift makes Polish indirect speech more straightforward than English, but pronoun and possessive adjustments still apply.

How It Works

Reported statements: że + same tense

• Direct: Jestem zmęczona. → Reported: Powiedziała, że jest zmęczona.

Reported questions

• Yes/no: Czy przyjdziesz? → Zapytał, czy przyjdę.
• Information: Gdzie mieszkasz? → Zapytał, gdzie mieszkam.

Reported commands: żeby + past form

• Przyjdź! → Prosił, żebym przyszedł.

Common Mistakes

Shifting tense (English habit)

• Wrong: Powiedział, że był zmęczony. (when he said "I am tired")
• Right: Powiedział, że jest zmęczony.
• Why: Polish does not shift tense in reported speech. The original tense is preserved.

Using że for commands

• Wrong: Prosił, że przyszedłem.
• Right: Prosił, żebym przyszedł.
• Why: Reported commands and requests use żeby + past form, not że.

Forgetting pronoun adjustment

• Wrong: On powiedział: "Ja jestem zmęczony." → Powiedział, że ja jest zmęczony.
• Right: Powiedział, że jest zmęczony. (he is tired)
• Why: Pronouns shift to match the reporting perspective, just as in English.

Usage Notes

Indirect speech is used in all registers. Journalistic Polish frequently uses reporting verbs like twierdził (claimed), zapewnił (assured), dodał (added). In academic writing, indirect speech with że is the standard way to reference sources.

Practice Tips

1. Take five direct quotes and convert them to indirect speech. Verify that the tense does not change.
2. Practice reporting questions: convert Czy...? questions to Zapytał, czy... and Gdzie/Kiedy/Jak...? to their indirect forms.
3. Practice reporting commands with żeby in all persons: żebym, żebyś, żeby, żebyśmy, żebyście, żeby.
