Numbers and Time in Polish

Liczebniki i Czas

Overview

Numbers in Polish are essential for daily life -- shopping, telling time, giving your age, and understanding prices. At the A1 level, you need to learn cardinal numbers from 0 to 100, basic ordinal numbers, and how to tell time. The most distinctive challenge is that Polish numbers trigger different grammatical forms of the accompanying noun depending on the number's value.

The number-noun agreement system is one of the most complex features of Polish. Numbers 2-4 take the nominative plural, while 5 and above take the genitive plural. The number 1 agrees in gender with the noun. Compound numbers follow the rules of their last component. This system has no parallel in English and requires dedicated practice.

Telling time uses ordinal numbers and special constructions, making it a practical application of both number knowledge and case usage.

How It Works

Cardinal numbers 0-20

Number Polish Number Polish
0 zero 11 jedenaście
1 jeden/jedna/jedno 12 dwanaście
2 dwa/dwie 13 trzynaście
3 trzy 14 czternaście
4 cztery 15 piętnaście
5 pięć 16 szesnaście
6 sześć 17 siedemnaście
7 siedem 18 osiemnaście
8 osiem 19 dziewiętnaście
9 dziewięć 20 dwadzieścia
10 dziesięć

Number-noun agreement

Number Noun form Example
1 nom. singular jeden kot
2-4 nom. plural dwa koty
5-21 gen. plural pięć kotów
22-24 nom. plural dwadzieścia dwa koty
25-31 gen. plural dwadzieścia pięć kotów

Telling time

Polish English
Która godzina? What time is it?
Jest pierwsza. It's one o'clock.
Jest trzecia. It's three o'clock.
Jest piąta trzydzieści. It's five thirty.
Jest wpół do szóstej. It's half past five.

Examples in Context

Polish English Note
Jest trzecia. It's three o'clock. Ordinal feminine
dwa koty two cats Nom. plural (2-4)
pięć kotów five cats Gen. plural (5+)
dwadzieścia jeden złotych twenty-one zloty Gen. plural
Mam trzydzieści lat. I'm thirty years old. Gen. plural with lat
To kosztuje dziesięć złotych. It costs ten zloty. Gen. plural
Jedna kawa, proszę. One coffee, please. Feminine jedna
Dwie kawy, proszę. Two coffees, please. Feminine dwie
o wpół do trzeciej at half past two Lit. "at half to third"
za piętnaście minut in fifteen minutes Gen. plural

Common Mistakes

Using nominative plural after 5+

  • Wrong: pięć koty
  • Right: pięć kotów
  • Why: Numbers 5 and above require the genitive plural, not nominative plural.

Forgetting gender for 1 and 2

  • Wrong: dwa kobiety
  • Right: dwie kobiety
  • Why: The number 2 has a feminine form dwie used with feminine nouns.

Wrong time construction

  • Wrong: Jest trzy godzina.
  • Right: Jest trzecia. (It's three o'clock.)
  • Why: Polish uses ordinal numbers (feminine, matching godzina) for telling time. The noun godzina is usually omitted.

Usage Notes

The number system works identically in all registers. Prices, ages, and quantities all follow the same number-noun agreement rules. In casual speech, Poles may simplify time expressions, but the formal system is understood everywhere.

Practice Tips

  1. Count objects around you in Polish, paying attention to whether to use nominative plural (2-4) or genitive plural (5+).
  2. Practice telling the time at various points during your day, using both the jest + ordinal and wpół do constructions.
  3. Practice shopping scenarios: To kosztuje dwadzieścia złotych. Proszę trzy jabłka.
