Nominalization

Nominalizacja

Nominalization in Polish

Overview

Nominalization converts clauses and verbs into noun phrases, creating a more compact and formal expression. At the C1 level, nominalization is a key feature of academic, legal, and journalistic Polish. Verbal nouns are formed with -nie/-cie suffixes: pisanie (writing), czytanie (reading), przyjęcie (acceptance/reception).

Nominalized constructions are preferred in formal registers because they sound more objective and impersonal. Instead of Kiedy wprowadzono nowe zasady, pracownicy protestowali (When new rules were introduced, employees protested), formal Polish prefers Po wprowadzeniu nowych zasad pracownicy protestowali (After the introduction of new rules, employees protested).

How It Works

Verbal noun formation

Verb Verbal noun English
pisać pisanie writing
czytać czytanie reading
budować budowanie building
wprowadzić wprowadzenie introduction
przyjąć przyjęcie acceptance
zakończyć zakończenie completion

Nominalized phrases with genitive

The object of the original verb becomes genitive:

  • pisać listpisanie listu (the writing of a letter)
  • przyjąć propozycjęprzyjęcie propozycji (the acceptance of the proposal)

Examples in Context

Polish English Note
pisanie listu the writing of a letter Verbal noun + genitive
przyjęcie propozycji the acceptance of the proposal Formal style
wprowadzenie nowych zasad the introduction of new rules Official language
po zakończeniu budowy after the completion of construction Temporal nominal
w celu poprawienia jakości in order to improve quality Purpose nominal
z powodu opóźnienia due to the delay Causal nominal
przed rozpoczęciem lekcji before the start of the lesson Temporal nominal

Common Mistakes

Overusing nominalization in casual speech

  • Wrong: Dokonanie zakupu mleka nastąpiło wczoraj.
  • Right: Kupiłem mleko wczoraj.
  • Why: Nominalization is for formal registers. In speech, verbal constructions are more natural.

Wrong case in nominalized phrase

  • Wrong: pisanie list (nominative)
  • Right: pisanie listu (genitive)
  • Why: The object of the nominalized verb takes the genitive case.

Usage Notes

Nominalization is a hallmark of formal, academic, and legal Polish. It is expected in scientific papers, official documents, and business reports. In journalism, moderate nominalization creates concise headlines and summaries. Excessive nominalization is criticized as "bureaucratese."

Practice Tips

  1. Convert verbal sentences to nominalized phrases: Wprowadzono nowe zasady → wprowadzenie nowych zasad.
  2. Read academic abstracts in Polish and identify nominalized constructions.
  3. Practice temporal nominalizations: po zakończeniu, przed rozpoczęciem, w trakcie realizacji.
