Modal Verbs in Polish
Czasowniki Modalne
Overview
Modal verbs express ability, necessity, desire, obligation, and permission. At the A1 level, the key Polish modals are musieć (must/have to), móc (can/be able to), chcieć (want), potrafić (know how to/be able to), and powinien/powinna (should). These verbs are followed by an infinitive and are essential for expressing everyday needs and abilities.
Polish modals conjugate for person and number like regular verbs, with powinien being a notable exception -- it uses a special adjectival form that agrees in gender. Most modals belong to Conjugation II or have irregular patterns, so their conjugation forms need to be memorized individually.
The distinction between móc (general possibility or permission) and potrafić (learned ability) is important in Polish and does not exist as clearly in English, where "can" covers both meanings.

Usage pattern

- Chcę się uczyć. (I want to learn.)
Examples in Context
| Polish | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Muszę iść. | I have to go. | Obligation |
| Czy możesz mi pomóc? | Can you help me? | Request/ability |
| Chcę się uczyć polskiego. | I want to learn Polish. | Desire |
| Potrafisz pływać? | Can you swim? | Learned ability |
| Powinieneś odpocząć. | You should rest. (to a man) | Advice |
| Nie mogę przyjść. | I can't come. | Impossibility |
| Musisz to zobaczyć! | You have to see this! | Strong recommendation |
| Chcemy zamówić. | We want to order. | Restaurant context |
| Nie powinnaś tego robić. | You shouldn't do that. (to a woman) | Gender agreement |
| Czy mogę wejść? | May I come in? | Permission |
Common Mistakes
Confusing móc and potrafić
- Wrong: Mogę pływać. (meaning "I know how to swim")
- Right: Potrafię pływać.
- Why: Móc expresses permission or general possibility. Potrafić expresses a learned skill or ability.
Wrong gender with powinien
- Wrong: Powinien to zrobić. (said by a woman about herself)
- Right: Powinnam to zrobić.
- Why: Powinien agrees in gender with the subject, unlike other modals.
Adding a preposition before the infinitive
- Wrong: Chcę do iść.
- Right: Chcę iść.
- Why: Polish modals are followed directly by the infinitive, with no preposition between them.
Usage Notes
Musieć expresses strong obligation in all registers. For polite requests, móc in the conditional (mógłbyś/mogłabyś) is preferred over the direct możesz. Powinien is used for advice and moral obligation. In formal writing, należy (one should) is often used instead of powinien for impersonal obligation.
Practice Tips
- Practice all five modals with common infinitives: iść, jeść, pić, mówić, pisać. This creates useful ready-made phrases.
- Focus on the móc vs. potrafić distinction by creating pairs: Mogę tu parkować (I'm allowed to park here) vs. Potrafię parkować (I know how to park).
- Practice powinien/powinna with both masculine and feminine subjects to build gender agreement reflexes.
