Conjugation II (-ę, -isz/-ysz) in Polish
Koniugacja II
Overview
Conjugation II is a major verb class in Polish with endings -ę, -isz/-ysz, -i/-y, -imy/-ymy, -icie/-ycie, -ą. It includes many common verbs such as mówić (speak), robić (do/make), uczyć się (learn), and widzieć (see). At the A1 level, these verbs are essential for everyday communication.
The choice between -isz and -ysz variants depends on the preceding consonant. After soft consonants and certain others, you use -i- forms; after hardened consonants like sz, ż, cz, dż, you use -y- forms. This distinction is phonological and becomes intuitive with practice.
Conjugation II verbs often describe communication, perception, and basic activities, making them among the highest-frequency verbs in Polish.
