Conjugation II (-ę, -isz/-ysz) in Polish

Koniugacja II

Overview

Conjugation II is a major verb class in Polish with endings -ę, -isz/-ysz, -i/-y, -imy/-ymy, -icie/-ycie, -ą. It includes many common verbs such as mówić (speak), robić (do/make), uczyć się (learn), and widzieć (see). At the A1 level, these verbs are essential for everyday communication.

The choice between -isz and -ysz variants depends on the preceding consonant. After soft consonants and certain others, you use -i- forms; after hardened consonants like sz, ż, cz, dż, you use -y- forms. This distinction is phonological and becomes intuitive with practice.

Conjugation II verbs often describe communication, perception, and basic activities, making them among the highest-frequency verbs in Polish.

Common Mistakes

Using -esz instead of -isz/-ysz

  • Wrong: Mówiesz po polsku?
  • Right: Mówisz po polsku?
  • Why: Mówić belongs to Conjugation II (-isz), not Conjugation I (-esz).

Wrong -i-/-y- variant

  • Wrong: Uczisz się polskiego.
  • Right: Uczysz się polskiego.
  • Why: After cz, the -y- variant is used, not -i-.

Forgetting stem changes in 1st person

  • Wrong: Widimy dom.
  • Right: Widzimy dom.
  • Why: Some Conjugation II verbs have consonant alternations. Always check the full paradigm.

Usage Notes

Conjugation II verbs are used consistently across all registers. Many of the most common Polish verbs belong to this class, so mastering it provides immediate communicative benefit.

Practice Tips

  1. Learn the 1st person singular and 2nd person singular together for each verb: mówię/mówisz, robię/robisz. These two forms reveal the conjugation class.
  2. Sort your Conjugation II verbs into -isz and -ysz groups based on the preceding consonant. Look for the pattern.
  3. Practice forming short dialogues using mówić, robić, lubić, widzieć -- these four verbs cover a huge range of basic conversations.
