Future Tense in Polish
Overview
Polish future tense formation depends entirely on verbal aspect. Perfective verbs form the future by simply using their present-tense conjugation (which automatically has future meaning). Imperfective verbs form the future with the auxiliary będę plus either the infinitive or the past participle. At the B1 level, understanding this aspect-driven system is crucial for expressing plans, predictions, and intentions.
This dual system means that Polish has no single "future tense" -- instead, it has two ways to express future actions depending on whether you emphasize the completion of the action (perfective) or its ongoing/repeated nature (imperfective). English speakers must learn to choose the aspect before forming the future.
The perfective future is more common in everyday speech when talking about specific planned actions, while the imperfective future describes what you will be doing over a period.
How It Works
Perfective future (= perfective present conjugation)
| Person | napisać (to write) |
|---|---|
| ja | napiszę |
| ty | napiszesz |
| on/ona | napisze |
| my | napiszemy |
| wy | napiszecie |
| oni/one | napiszą |
Imperfective future (będę + infinitive or past participle)
| Person | pisać (to write) |
|---|---|
| ja | będę pisać / będę pisał(a) |
| ty | będziesz pisać / będziesz pisał(a) |
| on/ona | będzie pisać / będzie pisał(a) |
| my | będziemy pisać / będziemy pisali/pisały |
| wy | będziecie pisać / będziecie pisali/pisały |
| oni/one | będą pisać / będą pisali/pisały |
Key distinction
- Napiszę list. = I will write a letter (and finish it).
- Będę pisać/pisał list. = I will be writing a letter (ongoing).
Examples in Context
| Polish | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Napiszę list. | I will write a letter. (perf) | Completed future |
| Będę pisać/pisał. | I will be writing. (imperf) | Ongoing future |
| Co będziesz robić? | What will you be doing? | Imperfective |
| Przyjdę o piątej. | I will come at five. | Perfective |
| Będziemy czekać. | We will be waiting. | Imperfective |
| Przeczytam to jutro. | I'll read it tomorrow. | Perfective |

| Zadzwonię do ciebie. | I'll call you. | Perfective |
| Czy będziesz w domu? | Will you be at home? | być, imperfective |

Common Mistakes
Using perfective present as actual present
- Wrong: Teraz napiszę list. (meaning "I'm writing right now")
- Right: Teraz piszę list. (present) or Napiszę list. (future)
- Why: Perfective verbs in their "present" conjugation always express future.
Using będę with perfective verbs
- Wrong: Będę napisać list.
- Right: Napiszę list. or Będę pisać list.
- Why: Będę is only used with imperfective verbs. Perfective verbs form the future on their own.
Forgetting gender agreement with past participle form
- Wrong: Będę pisał. (said by a woman)
- Right: Będę pisała.
- Why: When using będę + past participle, the participle must agree in gender.
Usage Notes
Both imperfective future forms (będę pisać and będę pisał) are correct and interchangeable in most contexts. The participle form (będę pisał) is slightly more common in spoken Polish. In formal writing, the infinitive form (będę pisać) may be preferred.
Practice Tips
- Take five aspect pairs and form both futures: napiszę / będę pisać, przeczytam / będę czytać.
- Describe your plans for tomorrow using both aspects: perfective for specific completed tasks, imperfective for ongoing activities.
- Practice questions about the future: Co będziesz robić? Kiedy przyjdziesz? Czy napiszesz?
