Academic Writing Style in Polish
Styl Akademicki
Overview
Academic Polish has distinctive features that set it apart from other formal registers. At the C1 level, producing academic-quality writing requires mastery of hedging expressions, impersonal constructions, citation conventions, and formal connectors. Polish academic style favors objectivity, precision, and nominalized expressions.
Key features include: hedging (wydaje się -- it seems, prawdopodobnie -- probably), impersonal passive (stwierdzono, że -- it has been established that), formal connectors (ponadto -- moreover, w konsekwencji -- consequently), and citation patterns (jak podaje Nowak -- as Nowak states).
Polish academic writing avoids first-person singular in favor of impersonal or first-person plural ("we") constructions, even for single-author papers.
How It Works
Hedging expressions
| Polish | English | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| wydaje się, że | it seems that | Weak claim |
| prawdopodobnie | probably | Moderate certainty |
| można stwierdzić, że | it can be stated that | Moderate claim |
| niewątpliwie | undoubtedly | Strong claim |
| z dużym prawdopodobieństwem | with high probability | Strong hedged claim |

| Impersonal się | Przyjmuje się, że... (It is assumed that...) |
| Modal + infinitive | Należy zauważyć, że... (It should be noted that...) |
| 1st plural | Przedstawiamy wyniki... (We present the results...) |
Academic connectors

| w konsekwencji | consequently |
| natomiast | whereas / on the other hand |
| w odniesieniu do | with reference to |
| w świetle powyższych danych | in light of the above data |

Common Mistakes
Using first person singular
- Wrong: Uważam, że wyniki są interesujące.
- Right: Wyniki wydają się interesujące. or Można uznać wyniki za interesujące.
- Why: Polish academic style avoids first-person singular. Use impersonal constructions or first-person plural.
Insufficient hedging
- Wrong: Wyniki dowodzą, że... (too strong for preliminary findings)
- Right: Wyniki sugerują, że... or Wyniki mogą wskazywać, że...
- Why: Academic writing requires appropriate epistemic modulation.
Usage Notes
Polish academic conventions are more formal than English ones. The impersonal style is more strongly expected. Citation conventions follow Polish bibliographic standards (though many journals now accept APA or other international formats). Conference presentations may be slightly less formal than written papers.
Practice Tips
- Read Polish academic abstracts and identify hedging expressions, connectors, and impersonal constructions.
- Practice rewriting informal statements in academic register: Myślę, że to ważne → Wydaje się, że jest to istotne.
- Build a personal glossary of academic connectors and use them in writing exercises.
