While -(으)면서 in Korean
동시 표현
Overview
The connective ending -(으)면서 expresses simultaneous actions ("while doing") at the CEFR A2 level. It requires the same subject for both clauses — one person doing two things at once. Vowel stems take -면서, consonant stems take -으면서. It can also express contrast when two states coexist in the same person.
How It Works
| Stem type | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Vowel | -면서 | 가면서 (while going) |
| Consonant | -으면서 | 먹으면서 (while eating) |
Rules:
- Same subject in both clauses
- No tense on the -면서 clause
- Can express contrast: 알면서 모른 척해요 (knows but pretends not to)

Common Mistakes
Using different subjects
- Wrong: 저는 공부하면서 친구는 놀아요 (I study while friend plays)
- Right: 저는 공부하고 친구는 놀아요 (I study and friend plays)
- Why: -(으)면서 requires the same subject for both clauses. Use -고 or -는 동안 for different subjects.
Confusing with -고 for simultaneity
- Wrong: Using -고 when emphasizing simultaneous actions
- Right: -면서 specifically means "while doing at the same time"; -고 means "and/then" (sequential or additive)
- Why: 먹고 가요 (eat then go) vs. 먹으면서 가요 (eat while going).
Usage Notes
-(으)면서 is very common for describing multitasking. The contrastive use (알면서 모른 척하다) adds emotional nuance, often implying criticism. In casual speech: -면서 can be shortened to -며 in formal writing.
Note that -(으)면서 can be strengthened with 동시에 (simultaneously) for emphasis: 일하면서 동시에 공부도 해요 (work and study at the same time). For different-subject simultaneous actions, use -는 동안 (while/during): 제가 요리하는 동안 청소해 주세요 (please clean while I cook).
The contrastive use of -(으)면서 is culturally important in Korean — it often implies criticism or irony: 알면서 왜 물어? (why ask when you know?), 약속했으면서 왜 안 와? (you promised, so why didn't you come?). This critical nuance makes -(으)면서 one of the emotionally richer connective endings.
Practice Tips
- Describe your multitasking habits: 음악 들으면서 운동해요. 커피 마시면서 일해요.
- Practice the contrast form: 좋아하면서 싫다고 해요 (says doesn't like it while actually liking it).
