Prefix se-

Awalan se-

Prefix se- in Indonesian

Overview

The prefix se- is a small but powerful element in Indonesian with several related meanings. At its core, se- conveys the idea of "one," "same," or "whole." It can mean "one unit of" (sebuah = one piece of), "as ... as" (sebesar = as big as), "the entire" (seluruh = the entire), or "each" (setiap = each/every).

Because se- has multiple functions, it appears frequently across all levels of Indonesian. Learning to recognize and use it will significantly expand your expressive range.

How It Works

Functions of Se-

Common Mistakes

Confusing se- with satu

  • Wrong: Satu buah buku in formal writing
  • Right: Sebuah buku
  • Why: In compound classifiers, se- replaces satu. Sebuah sounds more natural than satu buah.

Forgetting that se- can mean equality

  • Wrong: Not recognizing sebesar as "as big as"
  • Right: Rumah saya sebesar rumah dia. (My house is as big as his house.)
  • Why: Se- + adjective creates equality comparisons, an important and frequently used pattern.

Overusing seluruh for "all"

  • Wrong: Seluruh orang datang. for "everyone came"
  • Right: Semua orang datang. — seluruh is more formal and refers to an entire entity
  • Why: Seluruh emphasizes completeness of a whole entity; semua is the everyday word for "all."

Usage Notes

The se- prefix appears in both casual and formal Indonesian. The classifier usage (sebuah, seorang, seekor) is standard across all registers. The equality comparison (sebesar, setinggi) is common in both speech and writing. The entirety usage (seluruh, sepanjang) is slightly more formal but also appears in everyday language.

Practice Tips

  1. Practice with classifiers: sebuah meja, seorang dokter, seekor anjing, selembar foto. This reinforces both the se- prefix and Indonesian classifiers.
  2. Make equality comparisons: Dia setinggi saya. Rumah ini sebesar rumah itu. Makanannya seenak buatan ibu.
