Location Words in Indonesian

Kata Tempat

Overview

Building a vocabulary of common places is essential for navigating daily life in Indonesian. These nouns combine naturally with the prepositions di (at/in), ke (to), and dari (from) to express where you are, where you are going, and where you came from.

Many Indonesian place words are intuitive: restoran (restaurant), hotel (hotel), and bank (bank) are borrowed from other languages. Others are uniquely Indonesian, like pasar (market), warung (small shop/food stall), and rumah sakit (hospital, literally "sick house").

Common Mistakes

Forgetting prepositions before places

  • Wrong: Saya rumah. (I home)
  • Right: Saya di rumah. (I am at home)
  • Why: Unlike some casual English expressions, Indonesian requires the preposition di for location.

Confusing rumah makan and restoran

  • Wrong: Assuming they are completely different
  • Right: Both mean a place to eat, but rumah makan is more local/casual, restoran implies a more formal establishment
  • Why: Register and formality differ, but both are understood.

Splitting compound place names

  • Wrong: Saying rumah and sakit as separate concepts
  • Right: Rumah sakit is a fixed compound meaning "hospital"
  • Why: Many Indonesian place names are compound words with specialized meanings.

Practice Tips

  1. Practice giving directions using di, ke, and dari with different places: Saya di rumah. Saya pergi ke kantor. Saya pulang dari kantor.
  2. Learn compound place names as vocabulary items: rumah sakit, rumah makan, kantor pos, toko buku.
