Word Formation in Hungarian

Szóképzés

Overview

Hungarian is an agglutinative language with an extraordinarily productive word-formation system. By adding derivational suffixes to existing roots, speakers can create nouns from verbs, adjectives from nouns, and entirely new words following predictable patterns. At the CEFR C1 level, understanding these derivational patterns dramatically expands vocabulary because recognizing a suffix instantly reveals the meaning and word class of unfamiliar words.

The major derivational suffixes include -ság/-ség (abstract nouns), -ás/-és (action nouns), -ó/-ő (agent nouns/present participle), -tlan/-tlen (privative/without), and -ható/-hető (possibility). Each follows vowel harmony and can combine with further inflectional suffixes.

Mastering word formation transforms vocabulary learning from memorizing isolated words to understanding systematic patterns.

How It Works

Major Derivational Suffixes

Suffix Function Base → Derived English
-ság/-ség abstract noun szép → szépség beauty
-ás/-és action noun olvas → olvasás reading
-ó/-ő agent/doer tanít → tanító teacher
-tlan/-tlen without/un- szép → széptelen* ugly*
-ható/-hető -able olvas → olvasható readable
-i adjective from noun város → városi urban/city
-s having/possessing szín → színes colorful
-tás/-tés causative action tanul → tanítás teaching

*Note: szép → széptelen is illustrative; the common word for ugly is csúnya.

-ság/-ség: Abstract Nouns

Base Derived English
szép (beautiful) szépség beauty
beteg (sick) betegség illness
szabad (free) szabadság freedom/vacation
fiatal (young) fiatalság youth
ország (country) (ország itself uses -ság!)

-ás/-és: Action Nouns (Verbal Nouns)

Verb Noun English
olvas (read) olvasás reading
ír (write) írás writing
tanul (learn) tanulás learning/studying
főz (cook) főzés cooking
utaz (travel) utazás traveling

-ó/-ő: Agent Nouns

Verb Agent English
tanít (teach) tanító teacher
ír (write) író writer
vezet (lead/drive) vezető leader/driver
olvas (read) olvasó reader
hallgat (listen) hallgató listener/student

-ható/-hető: Possibility Adjectives

Verb Adjective English
olvas olvasható readable
ért érthető understandable
lát látható visible
használ használható usable
elfogad elfogadható acceptable

-tlan/-tlen / -talan/-telen: Privative (Without)

Base Derived English
szín (color) színtelen colorless
víz (water) víztelen waterless
gondatlan gondatlan careless
érthető (understandable) érthetetlen incomprehensible

Examples in Context

Hungarian English Note
szépség beauty -ség abstract

érthetetlen incomprehensible -telen privative
városi urban -i adjective
színes colorful -s possessing

Common Mistakes

Wrong vowel harmony on suffix

  • Wrong: olvasás → olvasóság
  • Right: Follow each suffix's own harmony rules
  • Why: Derivational suffixes have their own vowel harmony requirements independent of the base word.

Confusing -ás/-és (action) with -ság/-ség (abstract quality)

  • Wrong: olvasság (reading?)
  • Right: olvasás (reading as activity) vs szépség (beauty as quality)
  • Why: -ás/-és derives from verbs (actions); -ság/-ség derives from adjectives/nouns (qualities/states).

Overproducing non-existent derivatives

  • Wrong: Creating derivatives that don't exist in standard Hungarian
  • Right: Check whether a derived form is actually used
  • Why: While the system is productive, not every possible combination is established in the language.

Usage Notes

Word formation is one of Hungarian's greatest strengths — it allows speakers to express complex ideas concisely. A single derived word like megoldhatatlanság (unsolvability: meg-old-hat-atlan-ság) encodes multiple layers of meaning.

Understanding derivational patterns also helps with reading comprehension: encountering elfogadhatatlan for the first time, you can parse it as el-fogad-hat-atlan (away-accept-able-not = unacceptable).

Practice Tips

  • Take a root word and derive as many forms as possible: olvas → olvasás, olvasó, olvasható, olvashatatlan, olvasmány.
  • When encountering unknown words, try to identify the root and suffixes.
  • Build reverse derivations: start with a complex word and strip suffixes to find the root.
