Compound Tenses in Hungarian
Összetett Igeidők
Overview
Hungarian compound tenses are formed by combining a past tense verb with the particle volna (would have). These constructions express counterfactual past situations — things that did not happen but could have, should have, or would have happened. At the CEFR C1 level, these forms are essential for sophisticated expression of regret, missed opportunities, and hypothetical past scenarios.
The main compound tenses are the past conditional (olvastam volna — I would have read) and the past potential conditional (olvashattam volna — I could have read). These combine with the definite/indefinite distinction, verbal prefixes, and negation, creating a flexible system for expressing unrealized possibilities.
While the individual components (past tense, conditional volna, potential -hat/-het) are familiar from earlier levels, combining them fluently is a C1 skill.
How It Works
Past Conditional: Past tense + volna
| Hungarian | English |
|---|---|
| Olvastam volna. | I would have read. |
| Mentem volna. | I would have gone. |
| Megcsináltam volna. | I would have done it. |
| Látta volna. | He/She would have seen (it). |
Past Potential: Past of -hat/-het + volna
| Hungarian | English |
|---|---|
| Láthattam volna. | I could have seen (it). |
| Mehettem volna. | I could have gone. |
| Megcsinálhattam volna. | I could have done it. |
| Elolvashatták volna. | They could have read it. |
"Should Have" Construction: kell + past infinitive + volna
| Hungarian | English |
|---|---|
| El kellett volna mennem. | I should have left. |
| Meg kellett volna csinálnod. | You should have done it. |
| Szólni kellett volna. | Someone should have said something. |
Word Order with Volna
Volna follows the past tense verb:
- Mentem volna. — I would have gone.
- Nem mentem volna. — I would not have gone.
- With prefix: El*mentem volna.* — I would have left.
- Negated with prefix: Nem mentem volna el. — I wouldn't have left.

Common Mistakes
Putting volna before the verb
- Wrong: Volna mentem.
- Right: Mentem volna.
- Why: Volna always follows the past tense verb form.
Forgetting volna in both clauses of counterfactual
- Wrong: Ha tudtam volna, megcsináltam.
- Right: Ha tudtam volna, megcsináltam volna.
- Why: Both clauses of a past counterfactual typically need volna.
Confusing "should have" word order
- Wrong: Kellett el volna mennem.
- Right: El kellett volna mennem.
- Why: The word order is: prefix + kellett + volna + conjugated infinitive.
Usage Notes
These compound forms are common in everyday speech for expressing regret (Meg kellett volna mondanom — I should have said it), missed opportunity (Mehettem volna — I could have gone), and hypothetical past (Ha tudtam volna... — If I had known...).
In fast speech, volna is often pronounced vóna or even vón.
Practice Tips
- Express five regrets using kellett volna: things you should have done differently.
- Practice past conditional with ha...volna, ...volna patterns.
- Build compound forms step by step: past → past conditional (+ volna) → past potential conditional (+ -hat/-het + volna).
