Instrumental Case (-val/-vel) in Hungarian

Eszközhatározó (-val/-vel)

This article is part of the Hungarian grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

Overview

The instrumental case in Hungarian, formed with the suffix -val (back vowel) or -vel (front vowel), expresses "with" — both for instruments/tools and for accompaniment. It is one of the most frequently used cases and has a distinctive phonological feature: consonant assimilation, where the v of the suffix doubles the preceding consonant.

At the CEFR B1 level, mastering the instrumental case and its assimilation rules is important for expressing how actions are performed, who accompanies whom, and what means of transport is used. The assimilation rule is unique to -val/-vel and the translative -vá/-vé, making it a distinctive feature to learn.

The instrumental answers the question kivel? (with whom?) and mivel? (with what?).

How It Works

Basic Rule

Noun ending Suffix form Example
Vowel -val/-vel (no change) autóval (by car), kertvel → kerttel*
Consonant consonant doubles kés + vel → késsel, barát + val → baráttal

*After vowel-final words, -val/-vel simply attaches. After consonant-final words, the v assimilates to the final consonant.

Consonant Assimilation

The v in -val/-vel becomes a copy of the preceding consonant:

Noun + val/vel Result English
kés (knife) kés + vel késsel with a knife
Péter Péter + vel Péterrel with Péter
kéz (hand) kéz + vel kézzel by hand
barát (friend) barát + val baráttal with a friend
tej (milk) tej + vel tejjel with milk

After Vowels: No Assimilation

Noun + val/vel Result English
autó autó + val autóval by car
kávé kávé + val kávéval with coffee

Uses of the Instrumental

Use Example English
Tool/instrument Késsel vágom. I cut with a knife.
Accompaniment Péterrel megyek. I go with Péter.
Transport Autóval megyek. I go by car.
Material Kézzel írok. I write by hand.

Examples in Context

Hungarian English Note
késsel vágom I cut with a knife instrument
Péterrel megyek I go with Péter accompaniment
autóval by car transport
kézzel írok I write by hand means
ceruzával rajzolok I draw with a pencil instrument
tejjel kérem with milk, please ingredient
busszal megyek I go by bus transport (busz→busszal)
Kivel beszélsz? Who are you talking to? question
cukorral with sugar addition
barátommal with my friend accompaniment + possessive

Common Mistakes

Forgetting consonant assimilation

  • Wrong: késvel
  • Right: késsel
  • Why: The v assimilates to the preceding consonant. késvel → késsel (s+v → ss).

Not doubling correctly

  • Wrong: barátvel
  • Right: baráttal
  • Why: t + v → tt (the v becomes a copy of t). Back vowel word takes -val base, but v assimilates to -ttal.

Applying assimilation after vowels

  • Wrong: autóvval or autóval (no issue here actually)
  • Right: autóval
  • Why: After vowels, no assimilation occurs. The suffix simply attaches as -val/-vel.

Usage Notes

The instrumental case is used idiomatically in many fixed expressions: szemmel láthatóan (visibly, lit: "with eye seeably"), szívvel-lélekkel (wholeheartedly, lit: "with heart-soul").

For transport, Hungarian consistently uses the instrumental: autóval, busszal, vonattal, repülővel (by car, bus, train, plane). This replaces English's various prepositions (by car, on the bus, on the train).

Practice Tips

  • Practice the assimilation with ten consonant-final nouns: write out the full instrumental form for each.
  • Create sentences about your daily commute: Busszal megyek dolgozni. Autóval jövök haza.
  • Practice kivel? and mivel? question-answer pairs.
