Greetings and Basic Phrases in Hungarian
Overview
Hungarian greetings and polite expressions operate on a clear formal/informal axis that learners must navigate from day one. Unlike English, where "hello" works in nearly all contexts, Hungarian requires choosing between casual greetings (used with friends, family, and peers) and formal ones (used with strangers, elders, and in professional settings). Getting this wrong can cause offense or awkwardness.
At the CEFR A1 level, memorizing the core greetings, thank-you phrases, and basic conversational formulas is the quickest way to begin participating in Hungarian social life. These phrases also introduce important cultural concepts like the T-V distinction (informal te vs formal ön/maga) that will deepen at higher levels.
Many Hungarian greetings are longer than their English equivalents and may feel ceremonial at first, but they are used naturally and frequently in daily life.
How It Works
Informal Greetings (te-form)

|---|---|---|
| Szia! | Hi! / Bye! | universal informal, any time |
| Sziasztok! | Hi! / Bye! (plural) | to a group |
| Helló! | Hello! | informal, borrowed |
| Csá! / Csaó! | Ciao! / Bye! | very casual |
Formal Greetings (ön-form)
| Hungarian | English | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Jó napot kívánok! | Good day! | daytime, formal |
| Jó reggelt kívánok! | Good morning! | morning, formal |

Common Mistakes
Using szia in formal contexts
- Wrong: Szia! to a shopkeeper, older person, or stranger
- Right: Jó napot kívánok!
- Why: Szia is exclusively informal. Using it with strangers or elders is considered rude.
Dropping kívánok from formal greetings
- Wrong: Jó napot! (in very formal settings)
- Right: Jó napot kívánok!
- Why: While Jó napot! alone is acceptable in moderately formal situations, the full form with kívánok (I wish) is preferred for maximum politeness.
Confusing kérem and köszönöm
- Wrong: Using köszönöm when making a request
- Right: Kérem (please, when requesting) vs köszönöm (thank you, when receiving)
- Why: Kérem (I request/please) accompanies requests; köszönöm (I thank) acknowledges something received.
Usage Notes
Szia functions as both "hello" and "goodbye" in informal contexts — like Italian ciao. The formal farewell viszontlátásra literally means "until we see each other again" and is always used when leaving formal situations.
The word tessék is remarkably versatile: it means "here you go" (handing something), "please" (offering), "come in" (answering the door), and "how can I help you?" (in shops). Context determines the meaning.
In modern urban Hungarian, younger people increasingly use szia in semi-formal situations, but this varies by region and generation. When in doubt, go formal.
Practice Tips
- Practice greeting sequences: entering a shop (Jó napot kívánok!), asking for something (Kérem szépen, van...?), thanking (Köszönöm!), and leaving (Viszontlátásra!).
- Memorize formal and informal pairs together: Hogy van? / Hogy vagy?, Viszontlátásra! / Szia!
- Role-play simple interactions: ordering coffee, asking for directions, introducing yourself.
