Causal-Final Case (-ért) in Hungarian

Okhatározó (-ért)

Overview

The causal-final case, formed with the suffix -ért, expresses purpose ("for") and cause ("because of"). It is one of the simpler Hungarian cases because it has only one form — no vowel harmony variants, no consonant assimilation. The suffix is the same regardless of the noun's vowel character.

At the CEFR B1 level, this case is essential for expressing reasons, purposes, and what you are going for, working for, or paying for. It also forms the basis of the question word miért? (why? / for what?), which is one of the most common question words in Hungarian.

The causal-final case answers the questions miért? (why?), kiért? (for whom?), and miért? (for what purpose?).

How It Works

Formation

Simply add -ért to any noun, regardless of vowel type:

Noun With -ért English
kenyér kenyérért for bread
víz vízért for water
család családért for the family
pénz pénzért for money
barát barátért for a friend

Uses

Cause/reason Ezért jöttem. That's why I came.

Common Mistakes

Adding vowel harmony variants

  • Wrong: Looking for -ert or -ört forms
  • Right: Always just -ért
  • Why: Unlike most case suffixes, -ért has only one form. No vowel harmony variation.

Confusing -ért (for) with -nak/-nek (to/for)

  • Wrong: A családomnak dolgozom. (I work to my family)
  • Right: A családomért dolgozom. (I work for my family)
  • Why: -nak/-nek marks the recipient (indirect object); -ért marks the purpose or beneficiary of the action.

Overusing -ért where mert fits better

  • Wrong: Nem megyek, az esőért. (I'm not going, for the rain)
  • Right: Nem megyek, mert esik. (I'm not going because it's raining.)
  • Why: For subordinate clauses expressing reason, use mert (because). The causal-final case is for noun phrases, not clauses.

Usage Notes

The demonstrative forms ezért (for this / therefore) and azért (for that / that's why) are among the most common words in Hungarian. They function both as causal expressions and as discourse connectors.

Azért...mert is a common paired construction: Azért megyek, mert kell. (I'm going because I have to. — lit: for-that I-go because it-must.)

Practice Tips

  • Practice purpose expressions: Miért mész?Kenyérért / Tejért / Munkáért megyek.
  • Use ezért and azért in explanations: Beteg vagyok, ezért nem megyek.
  • Practice gratitude with -ért: Köszönöm az ebédért / a segítségért / az ajándékért.
