Direct Object Marker را in Persian

Overview

The particle را (rā) is one of the most important grammatical markers in Persian. It marks the definite direct object of a verb — in other words, it tells you that a specific, known thing is receiving the action. This is a concept that does not have an exact equivalent in English, which makes it both fascinating and occasionally tricky for learners.

At the A1 level, the key rule is simple: if the direct object is definite (a specific, known thing), place را after it. If the object is indefinite (any, some, a), do not use را. Compare: کتاب را خواندم (I read the book — a specific book) versus کتاب خواندم (I read a book — any book).

In colloquial spoken Persian, را is often shortened to رو (ro) or even just و (o) attached to the previous word. You will hear both forms constantly, so it is good to recognize them early.

• The object has a possessive: کتابم را آوردم (I brought my book)

When NOT to use را:

• The object is indefinite: نامه نوشتم (I wrote a letter)
• The object has یک (a/an): یک سیب خوردم (I ate an apple)

Common Mistakes

Using را with indefinite objects

• Wrong: من یک کتاب را خریدم.
• Right: من یک کتاب خریدم.
• Why: را is for definite objects only. When you say یک (a/an), the object is indefinite.

Forgetting را with definite objects

• Wrong: من کتاب خواندم (when you mean a specific book)
• Right: من کتاب را خواندم
• Why: Without را, the listener assumes you mean "a book" in general, not "the book" you both know about.

Placing را in the wrong position

• Wrong: من را کتاب خواندم
• Right: من کتاب را خواندم
• Why: را always comes immediately after the direct object, before the verb (SOV order).

Practice Tips

1. Take simple sentences and practice them in pairs — one with را (definite) and one without (indefinite). Notice how the meaning shifts: سیب خوردم (I ate an apple) vs سیب را خوردم (I ate the apple).
2. In conversation, always ask yourself before speaking: "Am I talking about a specific thing or any thing?" This determines whether you need را.
3. Listen for رو (ro) in spoken Persian — it is the colloquial form of را and appears constantly. Train your ear to catch it.
