Past Tense (Simple Past) in Basque
Lehenaldia
Overview
At the A2 level, you are ready to talk about past events. The past tense in Basque is formed by using past-tense auxiliary forms while the main verb stays in its base (participle) form. This means the main verb does not change for tense — all the tense information is carried by the auxiliary.
For intransitive verbs, the past forms of izan are used: nintzen (I was), zinen (you were), zen (he/she was), ginen (we were), zineten (you all were), ziren (they were). For transitive verbs, the past forms of ukan are used: nuen (I had it), zenuen (you had it), zuen (he/she had it), genuen (we had it), zenuten (you all had it), zuten (they had it).
The system is parallel to the present tense — the same verb aspects (habitual, perfective, future) combine with past auxiliaries instead of present ones.
How It Works
Past tense of izan (intransitive):
| Person | Past form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ni | nintzen | Ni ikaslea nintzen. (I was a student.) |
| zu | zinen | Zu hemen zinen. (You were here.) |
| hura | zen | Hura irakaslea zen. (He/She was a teacher.) |
| gu | ginen | Gu lagunak ginen. (We were friends.) |
| zuek | zineten | Zuek berandu zineten. (You all were late.) |
| haiek | ziren | Haiek Bilbon ziren. (They were in Bilbao.) |
Past tense of ukan (transitive, singular object):
| Person | Past form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| nik | nuen | Nik liburua irakurri nuen. (I read the book.) |
| zuk | zenuen | Zuk hori esan zenuen. (You said that.) |
| hark | zuen | Hark pelikula ikusi zuen. (He/She saw the film.) |
| guk | genuen | Guk dena prestatu genuen. (We prepared everything.) |
| zuek | zenuten | Zuek lana egin zenuten. (You all did the work.) |
| haiek | zuten | Haiek kafea edan zuten. (They drank coffee.) |
Past aspects:
| Aspect | Present | Past |
|---|---|---|
| Habitual | jaten dut (I eat) | jaten nuen (I used to eat) |
| Perfective | jan dut (I have eaten) | jan nuen (I ate) |
| Future-in-past | jango dut (I will eat) | jango nuen (I was going to eat) |

Common Mistakes
Using present auxiliaries for past events
- Wrong: Atzo liburua irakurri dut.
- Right: Atzo liburua irakurri nuen.
- Why: When the event is clearly in the past (atzo = yesterday), use past auxiliaries (nuen, zuen, etc.), not present ones (dut, du, etc.).
Confusing zen (was) and zuen (had it)
- Wrong: Hark liburua irakurri zen. (using intransitive for transitive)
- Right: Hark liburua irakurri zuen.
- Why: Zen is the past of izan (intransitive: "was"). Zuen is the past of ukan (transitive: "had it/did it"). Use zuen when there is a direct object.
Changing the main verb for past tense
- Wrong: Looking for a past form of the main verb
- Right: The main verb stays the same; only the auxiliary changes
- Why: In Basque, tense is carried entirely by the auxiliary. The main verb form does not change between present and past.
Usage Notes
In casual spoken Basque, the present perfective (jan dut — I have eaten) is sometimes used for recent past events, similar to how English uses the present perfect. However, for clearly past events (especially with time markers like atzo, joan den astean), the past auxiliaries are expected. As you advance to B1, you will learn the full past auxiliary paradigms including egon (nengoen, zegoen, etc.).
Practice Tips
- Take ten present-tense sentences you know well and convert them to the past by swapping the auxiliary: dut → nuen, da → zen, naiz → nintzen. This systematic approach builds the pattern.
- Write a short paragraph about what you did yesterday, using past auxiliaries throughout. Include both transitive and intransitive verbs.
