Locative Cases in Basque
Leku Kasuak
Overview
At the A2 level, you deepen your understanding of how Basque expresses spatial relationships through a system of locative cases. You already know the basics (-n for "in," -ra for "to," -tik for "from"), but now you will learn the full set of locative suffixes and understand how they interact with definite and indefinite nouns.
Basque has five main locative cases that form a coherent system for expressing location and movement. These are: the inessive (-n, in/at), allative (-ra, to), ablative (-tik, from), directional (-rantz, toward), and terminative (-raino, up to/until). Together they give you precise control over spatial expression.
Each of these suffixes attaches to the noun in a predictable way, and the definite/indefinite forms differ. Understanding this system thoroughly will make your Basque much more natural and precise.
How It Works
| Case | Suffix (def.) | Suffix (indef.) | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inessive | -an | -tan | in, at | etxean / etxetan |
| Allative | -ra | -tara | to | etxera / etxetara |
| Ablative | -tik | -tatik | from | etxetik / etxetatik |
| Directional | -rantz | -tarantz | toward | etxerantz |
| Terminative | -raino | -taraino | up to, until | etxeraino |
Definite vs. indefinite locative:
| Definite singular | Definite plural | Indefinite | |
|---|---|---|---|
| in | etxean (in the house) | etxeetan (in the houses) | bi etxetan (in two houses) |
| to | etxera (to the house) | etxeetara (to the houses) | bi etxetara (to two houses) |
| from | etxetik (from the house) | etxeetatik (from the houses) | bi etxetatik (from two houses) |
Special local forms with animate nouns (-gana, -gandik):
| Suffix | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -gana | to (a person) | medikuarengana (to the doctor) |
| -gandik | from (a person) | medikuarengandik (from the doctor) |
| -gan | at/with (a person) | amagan (in/at mother) |
Examples in Context
| Basque | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Etxean nago. | I am in the house. | Inessive |
| Eskolara noa. | I am going to school. | Allative |
| Kalean zehar. | Along the street. | Inessive + zehar |
| Mendiraino joan gara. | We have gone up to the mountain. | Terminative |
| Bilbotik etorri naiz. | I came from Bilbao. | Ablative |
| Etxerantz noa. | I am heading toward home. | Directional |
| Liburutegian ikasten dut. | I study in the library. | Location of activity |
| Parkera joango gara. | We will go to the park. | Future + allative |
| Herri horretatik dator. | He/She comes from that town. | Demonstrative + ablative |
| Mendian ibiltzen naiz. | I walk in the mountains. | Habitual + inessive |
Common Mistakes
Confusing inessive (-n) with allative (-ra)
- Wrong: Eskolara nago. (using "to" for static location)
- Right: Eskolan nago. (I am at school)
- Why: -n = static location (being somewhere), -ra = movement toward. You cannot "be to" a place.
Using definite locative endings on indefinite nouns
- Wrong: Bi etxean (in two houses)
- Right: Bi etxetan
- Why: After numbers and quantifiers, nouns are indefinite and take indefinite locative suffixes (-tan, -tara, -tatik).
Forgetting -gana for animate destinations
- Wrong: Medikura joan naiz. (to the doctor)
- Right: Medikuarengana joan naiz.
- Why: When the destination is a person (not a place), use -gana instead of -ra. For the hospital (a place), -ra is correct: ospitalera.
Usage Notes
Locative cases can stack with other suffixes to create more complex expressions. For instance, -ko can follow a locative to create adjectives: etxeko (domestic, of the house), herriko (local, of the town). The locative system is one of the most productive parts of Basque grammar, and fluency in these suffixes is essential for sounding natural. Regional dialects may show slight variations in pronunciation of these suffixes.
Practice Tips
- For every place you mention, practice all five locative forms: eskolan (at school), eskolara (to school), eskolatik (from school), eskolarantz (toward school), eskolaraino (up to school).
- Describe a journey using the full range: Etxetik eskolara joan naiz. Eskolan egon naiz. Eskolatik kalera atera naiz.
