Ser (to be) - Present

El Verbo Ser - Presente

Ser (to be) - Present in Spanish

Overview

The verb ser is one of the two Spanish verbs meaning "to be," and it is among the most important words you will learn at the A1 level. You use ser for things that are inherent, permanent, or define the essence of something: identity, origin, profession, physical characteristics, time, and possession.

Ser is highly irregular, meaning its forms do not follow the standard conjugation patterns. The good news is that because you will use it so frequently, its forms become automatic very quickly. Every conversation in Spanish will involve ser in some way, whether you are introducing yourself, describing someone, or telling the time.

Understanding when to use ser (as opposed to estar, the other "to be" verb) is one of the most important distinctions in Spanish. At this stage, focus on learning the conjugation and the core uses of ser.

Common Mistakes

Confusing ser with estar

  • Wrong: Estoy de España. (for origin)
  • Right: Soy de España.
  • Why: Origin is an inherent trait, so it uses ser. Estar is for locations and temporary states.

Using the wrong form for time

  • Wrong: Es las tres.
  • Right: Son las tres.
  • Why: For times other than one o'clock, use the plural form son. Only 1:00 uses es: Es la una.

Forgetting to drop the article with professions

  • Wrong: Soy un profesor. (without adjective)
  • Right: Soy profesor.
  • Why: After ser with unmodified professions, the indefinite article is omitted in Spanish.

Mixing up "soy" and "es"

  • Wrong: Yo es estudiante.
  • Right: Yo soy estudiante.
  • Why: Each subject pronoun has its own form. Soy goes with yo; es goes with él/ella/usted.

Practice Tips

  • Introduce yourself daily. Practice saying Soy [nombre], soy de [lugar], soy [profesión] until it flows naturally.
  • Tell the time in Spanish. Every time you check the clock, say the time using ser: Son las diez, Es la una y media.
  • Describe people around you. Use ser to describe physical traits and personality: Mi amigo es alto, es divertido, es argentino.
