Stem-Changing Verbs in German

Verben mit Vokalwechsel

Overview

Just when you have mastered the regular verb pattern, German throws a curveball: stem-changing verbs. These are verbs that follow the regular endings but change their stem vowel in the du and er/sie/es forms. This is an important A1 topic because many of the most common German verbs are stem-changers.

There are three main vowel change patterns: e → i (as in sprechensprichst), e → ie (as in lesenliest), and a → ä (as in fahrenfährst). The change only happens in the second and third person singular — all other forms are completely regular. This means you only need to watch out for du and er/sie/es.

These vowel changes cannot be predicted from the infinitive alone; you need to learn which verbs change and what the new vowel is. However, with practice, the most common ones become second nature very quickly.

How It Works

Pattern 1: e → i

Pronoun sprechen (to speak) geben (to give) helfen (to help)
ich spreche gebe helfe
du sprichst gibst hilfst
er/sie/es spricht gibt hilft
wir sprechen geben helfen
ihr sprecht gebt helft
sie/Sie sprechen geben helfen

Pattern 2: e → ie

Pronoun lesen (to read) sehen (to see)
ich lese sehe
du liest siehst
er/sie/es liest sieht
wir lesen sehen
ihr lest seht
sie/Sie lesen sehen

Pattern 3: a → ä

Pronoun fahren (to drive) schlafen (to sleep) tragen (to carry/wear)
ich fahre schlafe trage
du fährst schläfst trägst
er/sie/es fährt schläft trägt
wir fahren schlafen tragen
ihr fahrt schlaft tragt
sie/Sie fahren schlafen tragen

Common Mistakes

Applying the vowel change to all forms

  • Wrong: Wir sprichen Deutsch.
  • Right: Wir sprechen Deutsch.
  • Why: The vowel change only affects du and er/sie/es. All other forms use the original stem vowel.

Forgetting the change in the du/er forms

  • Wrong: Er sprecht gut Deutsch.
  • Right: Er spricht gut Deutsch.
  • Why: With stem-changing verbs, you must apply the vowel change in the 2nd and 3rd person singular. It is not optional.

Changing the vowel in the imperative incorrectly

  • Wrong: Fähr langsam! (du-form imperative)
  • Right: Fahr langsam!
  • Why: The a → ä change does NOT apply in the imperative. However, e → i/ie changes DO apply: Lies das Buch! (Read the book!).

Practice Tips

  1. Group by pattern: Make three lists (e→i, e→ie, a→ä) and add each new stem-changing verb you encounter to the correct list. Review them weekly.
  2. Third-person narration: Describe what someone else does using stem-changing verbs: "Mein Freund fährt zur Arbeit. Er liest die Zeitung. Er isst ein Brötchen."
  3. Flashcards with the changed form: On one side write the infinitive, on the other write the er/sie/es form. This drills the change directly.
