Conditional Sentences in Czech
Podmínkové Věty
Overview
Conditional sentences in Czech follow three main types corresponding to real, unreal present, and unreal past conditions. At the CEFR B2 level, mastering all three types allows nuanced expression of possibilities, hypotheticals, and counterfactuals.
Czech conditional sentences use jestli/pokud/když for real conditions (indicative mood), kdyby for unreal present conditions (conditional mood), and kdyby + past conditional for unreal past (past conditional). The system parallels English first, second, and third conditionals but with different mechanics.
How It Works
Three Types
| Type | If-clause | Main clause | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Real (1st) | jestli/pokud + indicative | indicative/future | Jestli přijdeš, budu rád. |
| Unreal present (2nd) | kdyby + conditional | conditional | Kdybych měl peníze, jel bych. |
| Unreal past (3rd) | kdyby + past conditional | past conditional | Kdybych byl věděl, byl bych přišel. |
Real Conditions
Jestli/Pokud/Když + present or future:
- Jestli přijdeš, budu rád. (If you come, I'll be happy.)
- Pokud bude pršet, zůstaneme doma. (If it rains, we'll stay home.)
Unreal Present Conditions
Kdyby + l-participle (conditional) in both clauses:
- Kdybych měl čas, pomohl bych. (If I had time, I would help.)
- Kdybych byl bohatý, cestoval bych. (If I were rich, I would travel.)
Unreal Past Conditions
Kdyby + byl/a + l-participle (past conditional):
- Kdybych byl věděl, byl bych přišel. (If I had known, I would have come.)
- Kdyby nebyla odešla, nic by se nestalo. (If she hadn't left, nothing would have happened.)

Common Mistakes
Using jestli for unreal conditions
- Wrong: Jestli bych měl peníze, jel bych.
- Right: Kdybych měl peníze, jel bych.
- Why: Jestli is for real, possible conditions. Hypotheticals require kdyby.
Incomplete past conditional
- Wrong: Kdybych věděl, přišel bych. (for past counterfactual)
- Right: Kdybych byl věděl, byl bych přišel.
- Why: Unreal past requires byl/a + l-participle in both clauses to distinguish from present conditional.
Mixing conditional types
- Wrong: Kdybych měl peníze, budu cestovat. (conditional + future)
- Right: Kdybych měl peníze, cestoval bych.
- Why: Both clauses should be in the same conditional type for consistency.
Usage Notes
Czech speakers sometimes blur the line between present and past conditionals in casual speech, using the simpler present conditional even for past counterfactuals. In formal writing, the distinction is maintained. Pokud is slightly more formal than jestli for real conditions.
Mixed Conditionals
Czech also allows mixed conditionals, combining present and past time references:
| Type | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Past condition → present result | Kdybych se byl učil, uměl bych česky. | If I had studied, I would know Czech. |
| Present condition → past result | Kdybych byl chytřejší, nebyl bych to udělal. | If I were smarter, I wouldn't have done it. |
These mixed forms are less common but appear in natural speech and literature.
I kdyby — "Even if"
The concessive conditional i kdyby expresses hypotheticals that would not change the outcome:
- I kdybys přišel, nic by to nezměnilo. (Even if you came, it wouldn't change anything.)
- I kdyby pršelo, půjdeme. (Even if it rains, we'll go.)
This construction combines concession with conditionality and is very useful for argumentation.
Practice Tips
- Write one sentence for each conditional type about the same situation.
- Practice the past conditional by describing three things that would have been different in your life.
- Convert real conditions to hypothetical ones: Jestli prší... → Kdyby pršelo...
