Compound Verb Forms in Czech

Složené Slovesné Tvary

Overview

Compound verb forms in Czech extend the basic tense system with the past conditional and the literary conditional-future. At the CEFR B2 level, these forms are needed for expressing counterfactual past events and nuanced temporal relationships.

The past conditional (byl bych dělal) is the most important compound form, used for "would have done" scenarios. The conditional-future (budu-li) is a literary construction. Together with the basic conditional, these forms complete Czech's mood system.

How It Works

Past Conditional

Structure: byl/a/i + bych/bys/by/bychom/byste/by + l-participle

Person Example Translation
já (m.) Byl bych ti pomohl. I would have helped you.
já (f.) Byla bych ti pomohla. I would have helped you.
my Byli bychom šli. We would have gone.
oni Byli by přišli. They would have come.

Negative Past Conditional

  • Nebyl bych to udělal. (I wouldn't have done it.)
  • Nebyli bychom odešli. (We wouldn't have left.)

Literary Conditional-Future (-li)

The suffix -li attached to verbs creates formal/literary "if" clauses:

  • Budu-li moci, přijdu. (If I can, I will come.)
  • Bude-li pršet, zůstaneme. (If it rains, we'll stay.)

This is equivalent to Jestli budu moci, přijdu but sounds more formal.

Past Conditional in Complex Sentences

The past conditional appears most naturally in counterfactual kdyby-clauses and their main clauses:

Clause type Structure Example
If-clause kdyby + byl/a + l-part. Kdybych byl věděl...
Main clause byl/a + bych + l-part. ...byl bych přišel.
Negative if kdyby + nebyl/a + l-part. Kdyby nebyl odešel...
Negative main nebyl/a + bych + l-part. ...nebyl bych čekal.

Distinguishing Present from Past Conditional

This distinction is crucial and frequently tested:

Type Czech English Time reference
Present conditional Pomohl bych ti. I would help you. now/general
Past conditional Byl bych ti pomohl. I would have helped you. past counterfactual
Present negative Nepomohl bych ti. I wouldn't help you. now/general
Past negative Nebyl bych ti pomohl. I wouldn't have helped you. past counterfactual

The difference between pomohl bych and byl bych pomohl is the same as between English "would help" and "would have helped." Czech marks this with the additional byl/a/i element.

Common Mistakes

Wrong word order in past conditional

  • Wrong: Bych byl pomohl ti.
  • Right: Byl bych ti pomohl.
  • Why: In past conditional, byl/a typically comes before the conditional auxiliary. Clitics follow second-position rules.

Confusing present and past conditional

  • Wrong: Pomohl bych ti. (when meaning past counterfactual)
  • Right: Byl bych ti pomohl.
  • Why: Without byl/a, it means present conditional ("I would help"), not past ("I would have helped").

Overusing the -li construction in speech

  • Wrong: Using přijde-li in casual conversation
  • Right: Jestli přijde...
  • Why: The -li construction is literary/formal. Use jestli/pokud/když in speech.

Usage Notes

The past conditional is essential for educated Czech. The -li construction appears in formal writing, legal texts, and older literature. In everyday speech, jestli/pokud replaces -li forms entirely.

Practice Tips

  • Convert five present conditionals to past conditionals: pomohl bychbyl bych pomohl.
  • Write a paragraph about what you would have done differently last year.
  • Read a formal Czech letter and identify any -li constructions.
