Abstract Grammar Patterns in Chinese
抽象语法
This article is part of the Chinese grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
In Brief
Formal Chinese often compresses a whole relationship into a short frame. 以 A 为 B assigns A a role or standard, 有所 + V presents a limited or measured result, 加以 + V marks deliberate action toward something, and 之所以 P,是因为 Q puts a result before its reason. These patterns are especially useful in reports, essays, public communication, and analytical writing.
Overview
The four patterns in this article help writers discuss abstract relationships: what serves as a basis, how far a situation has changed, what action should be taken, and why a result occurred. They are common at C1 because their individual characters may be familiar while their combinations have meanings and stylistic effects that cannot be recovered reliably by translating one character at a time.
They also belong to a broader written register (the style chosen for formal texts rather than casual conversation). Compare the conversational 这个问题要注意 “you need to pay attention to this problem” with the more formal 这一问题应加以注意 “this issue should receive attention.” The second version is less personal and foregrounds the issue and the required response.
English often expresses the same ideas with prepositions, passive constructions, or clauses such as “with X as…,” “has improved somewhat,” and “the reason is that….” Chinese instead favors reusable frames whose internal order is relatively fixed. Learning the frame as a unit is therefore more effective than matching every character to an English word.
How It Works
A map of the four patterns
| Pattern | Core structure | Main job | Typical translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 以……为 | 以 + A + 为 + B | assigns A a role, purpose, basis, or standard B | with A as B; take/use A as B |
| 有所 | 有所 + two-syllable verb or state | presents some degree of change, knowledge, or difference | somewhat; to some extent; some |
| 加以 | (object) + 加以 + action | applies a deliberate response to an identified object | address; give; subject to; carry out |
| 之所以……是因为 | 之所以 + result + 是因为 + reason | foregrounds a result, then supplies its cause | the reason why…is that… |
1. 以 A 为 B: assigning a role or standard
In 以 A 为 B, A is the item being selected and B is the role, goal, organizing principle, or standard assigned to it.
Structure: subject + 以 + A + 为 + B + (main verb or further description)
- 本项目以提高效率为目标。 — The project takes improving efficiency as its goal.
- 该地区形成了以北京为中心的交通网络。 — The region has formed a transport network centered on Beijing.
The construction may be a complete predicate, as in 我们以质量为先 “we put quality first,” or it may modify a noun with 的:
以 A 为 B + 的 + noun
- 以市场需求为导向的改革 — reform guided by market demand
- 以事实为依据的判断 — a judgment based on facts
Common fixed B elements make the intended relationship clear:
| B element | Relationship | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 中心 | center | 以城市为中心 | centered on the city |
| 目标 / 目的 | goal / purpose | 以减排为目标 | with emissions reduction as the goal |
| 基础 / 依据 | basis | 以数据为依据 | based on data |
| 标准 / 准 | standard | 以结果为准 | take the result as authoritative |
| 主 | principal component | 以线上服务为主 | mainly based on online service |
| 例 | example | 以本案为例 | take this case as an example |
Do not confuse 以 A 为 B with 认为 “think/consider.” In 大家认为这个方案可行, 认为 is one verb meaning “consider.” In 大家以安全为首要原则, 以 and 为 surround the item assigned a role.
2. 有所 + V/state: measured change or limited extent
Here 所 is part of a compact written construction, not a place word. 有所 normally precedes a two-syllable verb or state describing change, understanding, achievement, or difference:
subject + 在……方面 + 有所 + 改善 / 提高 / 增加 / 减少 / 了解 / 不同
- 服务质量有所改善。 — Service quality has improved somewhat.
- 我对这一领域有所了解。 — I have some knowledge of this field.
The effect is measured rather than dramatic. 价格有所下降 reports a decline without claiming that it was large. Context may give the exact amount, but 有所 itself only signals a non-total, limited, or cautiously stated degree.
Several patterns are especially common:
- 在 A 方面有所 V: 在安全性方面有所提高 “show some improvement in safety”
- 与 A 有所不同: “differ somewhat from A”
- 对 A 有所了解 / 认识: “have some understanding of A”
- 有所 V,但……: acknowledge progress before introducing a limitation
Not every verb fits. 有所 combines naturally with scalable situations—ones that can exist by degree. A completed event such as 签署合同 “sign a contract” is normally either done or not done, so 有所签署合同 is not natural.
3. 加以 + action: directing a response at something
加以 introduces an intentional action applied to an object already named or understood. The object usually appears before 加以, often as the topic (what the sentence is about) or after 对:
object/topic + modal or adverb + 加以 + action verb
对 + object + 加以 + action verb
- 这一现象值得加以研究。 — This phenomenon deserves study.
- 有关部门将对申请材料加以审核。 — The relevant authorities will review the application materials.
Common following verbs include 说明 “explain,” 分析 “analyze,” 研究 “study,” 处理 “handle,” 解决 “resolve,” 改进 “improve,” 控制 “control,” and 注意 “attend to.” These are usually formal, often two-syllable action verbs. Although English may use a passive translation, 加以 itself is not a passive marker. It signals the application of an action; the surrounding sentence determines who acts and whether the English rendering sounds active or passive.
Modal verbs frequently precede it:
- 应加以注意 — should receive attention / should be noted
- 必须加以控制 — must be brought under control
- 需要加以说明 — needs to be explained
Negation normally comes before 加以: 未加以说明 “was not explained,” 不加以限制 “if no restriction is imposed.”
4. 之所以 P,是因为 Q: result first, reason second
This paired construction begins with the result or situation P and then gives its reason Q:
subject + 之所以 + P,(主要)是因为 + Q
- 这项改革之所以受到支持,是因为它回应了实际需求。 — The reason this reform received support is that it responded to real needs.
In plain 因为 Q,所以 P, the reason comes first. With 之所以 P,是因为 Q, the known or noteworthy result comes first, and the sentence then identifies its explanation. This makes the pattern useful when answering an implicit question such as “Why did that happen?”
| Information order | Pattern | Emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| reason → result | 因为 Q,所以 P | presents a cause and then its consequence |
| result → reason | 之所以 P,是因为 Q | starts from the result and explains it |
是 is sometimes omitted, especially when the link remains obvious: 他之所以没来,因为临时有事。 In careful formal prose, 是因为 is usually clearer and more balanced. Alternatives such as 原因在于 Q or 是由于 Q can replace 是因为 Q when the register calls for them.
Examples in Context
| Chinese | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 该计划以改善公共交通为目标。 | The plan aims to improve public transport. | 以 A 为目标 states the goal. |
| 我们将建立以用户需求为导向的服务体系。 | We will establish a service system guided by user needs. | The whole 以……为…… phrase modifies 服务体系. |
| 评估结果应以实际数据为依据。 | The assessment results should be based on actual data. | A supplies the basis. |
| 这家机构以线上咨询为主。 | This organization mainly provides online consultations. | 以……为主 identifies the principal form. |
| 经过调整,整体效率有所提高。 | After the adjustments, overall efficiency improved somewhat. | A cautious report of change. |
| 新方案与原方案有所不同。 | The new proposal differs somewhat from the original one. | Common with 与……不同. |
| 他对当地情况有所了解。 | He has some knowledge of local conditions. | Limited but real familiarity. |
| 报告指出,空气质量虽有所改善,但问题仍然存在。 | The report notes that although air quality has improved, problems remain. | 有所 helps make a balanced claim. |
| 对调查中发现的问题,应及时加以处理。 | Problems found in the investigation should be addressed promptly. | The object follows 对 and precedes 加以. |
| 这一点需要在报告中加以说明。 | This point needs to be explained in the report. | A common impersonal formal structure. |
| 若不加以控制,成本可能继续上升。 | If it is not brought under control, costs may continue to rise. | Negation precedes 加以. |
| 她之所以接受这个职位,是因为它提供了更多研究机会。 | The reason she accepted the position is that it offered more research opportunities. | Result first, reason second. |
| 该项目之所以延期,主要是因为资金未能按时到位。 | The main reason the project was delayed is that funding did not arrive on time. | 主要 narrows the claim to the main cause. |
| 我们之所以以数据为依据,是因为直觉容易受到偏见影响。 | We use data as our basis because intuition is easily affected by bias. | Two core patterns work together naturally. |
Common Mistakes
Reversing A and B in 以 A 为 B
- Wrong: 本项目以目标为提高效率。
- Right: 本项目以提高效率为目标。
- Why: A is the item selected; B is the role assigned to it. “Improving efficiency” is selected as the project’s “goal.”
Treating 有所 as a general word for “some”
- Wrong: 公司有所签署了合同。
- Right: 公司签署了几份合同。
- Why: 有所 does not quantify concrete countable objects and does not naturally soften a completed event. Use a quantity such as 几份 when you mean “some contracts.”
Putting the object after 加以
- Wrong: 我们应加以分析这个问题。
- Right: 我们应对这个问题加以分析。
- Why: In this formal construction, the object is normally established before 加以, often after 对 or as the sentence topic.
Using 加以 with an everyday action simply to sound formal
- Wrong: 我加以吃了午饭。
- Right: 我吃了午饭。
- Why: 加以 selects deliberate abstract actions such as analyzing, controlling, explaining, or improving. It cannot be inserted before any verb.
Mixing up the two halves of the reason pattern
- Wrong: 之所以道路关闭,所以发生了事故。
- Right: 道路之所以关闭,是因为发生了事故。
- Why: 之所以 introduces the result; 是因为 introduces the reason. Use 因为……所以…… if you want reason-first order.
Giving an effect instead of a cause after 是因为
- Wrong: 项目之所以延期,是因为无法按时交付。
- Better: 项目之所以延期,是因为关键设备未能按时到货。
- Why: “Could not be delivered on time” merely restates “was delayed.” The second half should identify an actual cause.
Usage Notes
These structures are formal, but not equally restricted to writing. 有所改善, 有所了解, and 之所以……是因为…… also occur in careful speech, interviews, presentations, and news discussion. 以……为…… is common in prepared speech and institutional language. 加以 has the strongest administrative or analytical flavor and can sound unnecessarily heavy in a casual exchange.
Formal Chinese often leaves the human actor unmentioned. 这一问题应加以解决 focuses on the problem and obligation, not on who must solve it. English may naturally translate this with a passive (“should be resolved”), but Chinese has not necessarily used a grammatical passive such as 被.
Avoid stacking formal devices merely for prestige. 有关方面应当对该问题进行研究并加以分析 may be justified if “research” and “analysis” are distinct steps, but otherwise a direct 有关方面应分析该问题 is clearer. Good formal style is precise and economical, not automatically longer.
Punctuation helps readers process paired frames. A comma normally separates the two substantial halves of 之所以……,是因为……. Short 以……为…… and 有所…… phrases do not require special punctuation.
Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use
Parallel and nested structures
Formal prose often repeats 以 to present an organized set of principles:
- 以质量为核心,以需求为导向,以数据为依据 — with quality at the core, needs as the guide, and data as the basis
Parallel phrases should describe comparable relationships. A mismatched list is grammatically possible but rhetorically weak. Keep the B elements aligned—for example, three principles or three goals.
An 以 A 为 B 的 N phrase can also sit inside a larger sentence:
- 政府提出了以技术创新为核心、以绿色发展为目标的新战略。 — The government proposed a new strategy centered on technological innovation and aimed at green development.
Careful claims with 有所
Academic and policy writing often uses 有所 as a hedge (language that deliberately limits the strength of a claim). 结果有所改善 commits the writer to improvement but not to a dramatic or universal improvement. This is useful when evidence is positive yet mixed.
It can combine with explicit limits: 在部分地区有所下降 “declined in some regions,” or contrast with a remaining problem: 认识有所提高,但落实仍不到位 “awareness has increased, but implementation remains inadequate.” Do not use it to hide a precise figure when that figure is important; cautious language should not replace evidence.
Variants of the causal frame
The second half may identify more than a simple cause:
- 之所以……,主要在于…… — the main reason lies in…
- 之所以……,是由于…… — the reason is due to…
- 之所以……,并非因为 A,而是因为 B — not because A, but because B
The last version corrects an assumed explanation: 他之所以沉默,并非因为同意,而是因为还需要时间考虑。 “The reason he remained silent was not that he agreed, but that he needed more time to think.”
之所以 can occasionally appear after the topic rather than immediately after the subject, but the relationship must remain easy to follow. In long sentences, keep P reasonably compact; otherwise readers may lose the connection before reaching 是因为.
Choosing the direct alternative
A C1 writer should know not only how to produce these forms but when to avoid them:
| Formal version | More direct version | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| 以降低成本为目标 | 目标是降低成本 | The first integrates smoothly into formal description. |
| 效率有所提高 | 效率提高了一些 | The second is more conversational. |
| 对方案加以修改 | 修改方案 | The direct verb is often clearer when no formal emphasis is needed. |
| 之所以失败,是因为准备不足 | 因为准备不足,所以失败了 | The first foregrounds the result; the second narrates cause to effect. |
Register is a choice, not a ladder on which the longest expression is always best.
Practice Tips
- Build frames, not vocabulary lists. Collect five useful completions for each pattern: 以……为目标/依据/主, 有所改善/提高/了解, and 加以分析/说明/控制. Then replace A or the topic with material from your own work or studies.
- Rewrite in both directions. Turn 因为 Q,所以 P into P 之所以……,是因为 Q, and turn direct verbs such as 应解决这个问题 into 这个问题应加以解决. Explain what changes in emphasis and register.
- Edit for necessity. Take a Chinese report or news analysis, underline these patterns, and ask what each one contributes: role, measured degree, deliberate treatment, or result-first explanation. When reviewing your own writing, remove any 加以 or 以……为…… that adds formality but no precision.
