Abstract Directional Complements in Mandarin Chinese

引申趋向补语

This article is part of the Chinese grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

Mandarin directional complements can describe a figurative change rather than movement through space. After a verb or adjective, 起来 can mark a beginning or an impression, 下去 continuation, 出来 emergence or discovery, 下来 settling or preservation, and 过来 recovery or realization. Learn each combination as a meaning pattern: the best English equivalent is often not a direction word at all.

Overview

A directional complement is an element placed after a verb to show the direction or result of an action. In literal uses, the image is physical: 走进来 means “walk in toward the speaker,” and 拿出去 means “take out away from the speaker.” In abstract uses, the same forms organize events and mental states. A laugh “rises” into action in 笑起来, a conversation carries “onward” in 说下去, and an idea comes “out” in 想出来.

These figurative meanings are common in everyday Mandarin. They let speakers describe the beginning and continuation of events, changes of state, perception, discovery, memory, and recovery. English often expresses the same ideas with phrasal verbs such as “calm down,” “figure out,” and “wake up,” but the pairings do not match word for word. For example, English “write down” usually corresponds to 写下来, not a literal translation built from the Chinese word for “down.”

At B2, the main task is not simply recognizing the characters. It is choosing the complement that presents the event in the intended way. You should already be comfortable with literal and complex directional complements; here the focus is their extended meanings and the contrasts among them.

How It Works

The basic structure

The predicate (the part that says what happens or what something is like) comes first, followed by the complement:

Pattern Main idea Example Meaning
verb + 起来 begins; becomes perceptible 笑起来 start laughing
verb + 下去 continues onward 说下去 keep talking
verb + 出来 emerges; is produced or detected 看出来 see or work out
verb/adjective + 下来 settles into a state 安静下来 quiet down
verb + 下来 is recorded, retained, or fixed 记下来 write down / make a note of
verb + 过来 returns to a normal or aware state 醒过来 regain consciousness / wake up

A complement does not have one fixed English translation. 下来, for instance, contributes a broad image of movement toward a stable endpoint. In 慢下来, a process settles into a slower state; in 保存下来, something is preserved so that it remains available.

起来: beginning and apparent qualities

With an action verb, 起来 often marks the onset of an action or state:

  • 孩子哭起来了。 — The child started crying.
  • 大家都笑了起来。 — Everyone began to laugh.

The placement of 了 matters. In 笑起来了, sentence-final 了 signals that a new situation has arisen: the laughing has begun. The common pattern V + 了 + 起来 also presents the action as beginning, especially when other material follows: 他突然唱了起来 (“He suddenly began to sing”).

With perception verbs such as 看 and 听, 起来 means “when seen/heard” or “to seem”:

  • 这件事看起来很简单。 — This matter looks simple.
  • 这个主意听起来不错。 — This idea sounds good.

Here 看起来 does not mean that somebody starts looking. It introduces an impression, which is usually followed by an evaluation.

下去: continuation into the future

下去 presents an activity or condition as continuing beyond the current point:

  • 请说下去。 — Please continue.
  • 这样下去会出问题。 — If this continues, there will be problems.
  • 再难也要坚持下去。 — However difficult it is, we must keep going.

The subject may actively maintain the action, as in 坚持下去, or a situation may simply persist, as in 天气再这样冷下去…… (“If the weather stays this cold…”). In conditional warnings, 再这样……下去 is especially common.

出来: emergence, production, and recognition

The literal image behind 出来 is something becoming visible by coming out. Figuratively, a thought, distinction, or hidden fact becomes accessible:

  • 想出来 — think up; figure out
  • 看出来 — notice; tell by looking
  • 听出来 — recognize by hearing
  • 说出来 — express aloud
  • 做出来 — produce successfully

The verb tells you how the result emerges. 我听出来是他了 means the speaker identified him from the voice; 我看出来他很紧张 means the speaker detected his nervousness visually or from visible evidence.

下来: settling, completion, and retention

With verbs or adjectives describing a changing condition, 下来 marks movement toward a calmer, slower, lower, or more stable state:

  • 安静下来 — become quiet
  • 慢下来 — slow down
  • 冷静下来 — calm down
  • 稳定下来 — stabilize

With verbs such as 写, 记, 录, 拍, and 保存, it often means that information or an object is captured and kept:

  • 把地址写下来。 — Write the address down.
  • 这段历史被记录下来了。 — This period of history was recorded.
  • 这些照片保存了下来。 — These photographs were preserved.

This retention meaning is related to reaching a lasting result: what was fleeting is made stable.

过来: recovery and arriving at understanding

Abstract 过来 often presents a person as crossing back into awareness, normal functioning, or understanding:

  • 醒过来 — regain consciousness; wake up
  • 缓过来 — recover; catch one’s breath
  • 反应过来 — realize; register what has happened
  • 明白过来 — come to understand

This is not merely the physical 来 “toward the speaker.” The reference point is often a normal or newly understood state. 他终于反应过来了 means that understanding arrived after a delay.

Negation and potential forms

To say that an event does not begin or continue, place 不 before the whole verb-complement unit: 笑不起来 (“cannot bring oneself to laugh”) and 说不下去 (“cannot continue speaking”). These are often potential complements—forms that say whether a result can be achieved—rather than simple factual negation.

Compare:

Form Typical meaning
没笑起来 did not start laughing
笑不起来 cannot laugh / cannot bring oneself to laugh
没看出来 did not notice it
看不出来 cannot tell
没缓过来 did not recover
缓不过来 cannot recover or catch up yet

For a completed past event that failed to happen, 没(有) is normally the safer choice. 不 commonly expresses inability, unwillingness, a general situation, or a future possibility.

Objects and word order

Object placement depends on the verb, the complement, information focus, and how fixed the combination has become. Three useful patterns are:

Pattern Example Comment
verb + complement + object 他想出来一个办法。 Common when the result is introduced after the complete unit
verb + object + complement 把重点记下来。 把 places the affected object before the verb
verb + result/object + 来 他想出一个办法来。 出……来 can surround a longer result phrase

Do not force every abstract combination into one mechanical formula. With a definite object, the 把 construction is often the clearest: 请把你的想法说出来 (“Please say what you think”). Pronouns and short objects can behave differently across particular combinations, so it is best to store frequent phrases as complete chunks.

Examples in Context

Mandarin Chinese English Note
听到这个消息,她笑起来了。 She started laughing when she heard the news. 起来 marks the beginning of an action.
音乐一响,大家就跳了起来。 As soon as the music started, everyone began dancing. V + 了 + 起来 presents a sudden onset.
这道题看起来很难,其实不复杂。 This problem looks difficult, but it is not actually complicated. 看起来 introduces an impression.
你的计划听起来很合理。 Your plan sounds very reasonable. 听起来 evaluates something by how it sounds.
别停,继续说下去! Don’t stop—keep talking! 下去 continues the activity.
如果物价这样涨下去,大家都会受影响。 If prices keep rising like this, everyone will be affected. 这样……下去 projects a trend forward.
他想出来一个解决办法。 He figured out a solution. The idea emerges through thought.
我一听就听出来是她的声音。 I recognized her voice as soon as I heard it. 听出来 means identification by hearing.
你怎么看出来他在撒谎? How could you tell that he was lying? 看出来 means detecting hidden information.
有什么问题就说出来,别憋在心里。 If something is wrong, say it—don’t bottle it up. 说出来 makes an unspoken thought explicit.
大家先安静下来,听我解释。 Everyone calm down first and listen to my explanation. 下来 marks a transition to quiet.
她深呼吸了几次,慢慢冷静下来了。 She took several deep breaths and gradually calmed down. The new state has been reached.
请把会议时间记下来。 Please make a note of the meeting time. 下来 gives the result of retaining information.
过了好一会儿,他才醒过来。 It was quite a while before he regained consciousness. 过来 marks return to awareness.
我走出门以后才反应过来:手机忘带了。 Only after I walked out did I realize that I had forgotten my phone. 反应过来 is delayed realization.

Common Mistakes

Treating every complement as literal movement

  • Wrong interpretation: 这个办法听起来不错 = “This solution listens upward well.”
  • Right: “This solution sounds good.”
  • Why: 听起来 introduces the impression made on hearing. No physical upward motion is involved.

Using 下去 for a completed change of state

  • Wrong: 大家听到老师的话以后安静下去。
  • Right: 大家听到老师的话以后安静下来了。
  • Why: The sentence describes reaching a quieter state, so 下来 fits. 安静下去 would emphasize remaining quiet or continuing in that condition and needs a suitable context.

Confusing failure with inability

  • Wrong: 昨天我看不出来他很累。 when you mean “I didn’t notice.”
  • Right: 昨天我没看出来他很累。
  • Why: 没看出来 reports what did not happen on a past occasion. 看不出来 normally means “cannot tell.”

Translating English phrasal verbs word for word

  • Wrong: choosing a complement because English uses “up,” “down,” or “out.”
  • Right: learn the Mandarin pairing, such as 想出来 “think up,” 记下来 “note down,” and 醒过来 “come to.”
  • Why: English and Mandarin both use spatial imagery, but they divide meanings differently.

Separating a fixed combination carelessly

  • Awkward: 请说你的真实想法出来。
  • Better: 请把你的真实想法说出来。
  • Why: With a definite, affected object, 把 + object + verb-complement is often natural and clear. Object placement is not determined by an English sentence pattern.

Usage Notes

These complements are neutral and frequent in both conversation and writing. Some combinations are especially conversational: 我一下没反应过来 (“I didn’t get it for a moment”) and 我还没缓过来 (“I still haven’t recovered”). Formal writing may choose more compact vocabulary such as 持续 “continue,” 察觉 “detect,” or 恢复 “recover,” but the complement constructions remain fully acceptable.

Aspect markers help show how the event unfolds. Sentence-final 了 often signals a new state: 天冷起来了 (“It has started getting cold”) or 他终于平静下来了 (“He finally calmed down”). 着 can describe an ongoing state, but it does not freely combine with every abstract complement; prefer attested chunks rather than adding it by analogy.

Tone and context affect translation. 说下去! can be encouraging (“Go on!”) or impatient (“Keep talking, then!”). 你说出来啊! may be an invitation to speak openly or a challenge to reveal something. The grammar supplies the event shape; intonation supplies much of the attitude.

In speech, the object may be omitted when obvious: 我终于想出来了 means “I finally figured it out.” Mandarin does not require an object pronoun equivalent to English “it” when the reference is clear.

Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use

The contrast between 起来 and 下来 can present opposite phases of change. 热闹起来 means that a place becomes lively; 安静下来 means that it settles into quiet. This is not a universal opposition of “up” and “down,” but it is a productive way of viewing activation versus stabilization.

Some forms develop meanings that are more lexicalized—that is, stored as familiar expressions rather than calculated anew. 想起来 usually means “remember” or “come to mind,” while 想出来 means “think up” or “work out”:

  • 我突然想起来他的名字了。 — I suddenly remembered his name.
  • 我终于想出来一个好办法。 — I finally came up with a good solution.

Likewise, 看起来 presents an appearance, while 看出来 presents a successful inference:

  • 他看起来很累。 — He looks tired.
  • 我看出来他很累。 — I can tell that he is tired.

Potential forms create further useful contrasts. 说不出来 can mean that words cannot be produced (“I can’t put it into words”), whereas 说不下去 means that speech cannot continue, perhaps because the speaker is upset. 想不起来 means “cannot remember”; 想不出来 means “cannot think of or work out.” The complement identifies the missing stage: retrieval, production, or continuation.

A complement can also organize an entire clause. In 这样下去,我们会迟到的, the phrase 这样下去 means “if things continue like this” and sets the condition for the following prediction. In 仔细想起来,这件事确实有点奇怪, 想起来 can frame a reflective perspective: “Thinking about it carefully…”. Such clause-level uses are common in fluent narrative and discussion.

Practice Tips

  1. Build contrast sets rather than isolated flashcards: 想起来 / 想出来, 看起来 / 看出来, and 说出来 / 说下去. Write one sentence for each form and explain what stage of the event it highlights.
  2. When listening, pause after a verb-complement phrase and label its function: beginning, continuation, emergence, settling, retention, or recovery. This trains meaning directly instead of translating the characters separately.
  3. Recast short situations with 把 and with an omitted object: 我记下来了 → 我把地址记下来了. Check whether the object is already known, newly introduced, or unnecessary.
