Formal and Academic Hindi

This article is part of the Hindi grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

Formal and academic Hindi is not a separate grammar system. It is a register—a variety chosen for a particular situation—that combines precise, often Sanskrit-derived vocabulary with passive constructions, noun-heavy expressions, and explicit logical connectors: अतः, तथापि, and यद्यपि. Good formal writing is clear and controlled; simply replacing every familiar word with the most Sanskritic alternative usually makes a text harder, not better.

Overview

You encounter formal Hindi in academic articles, university assignments, lectures, serious journalism, reports, public notices, and prepared speeches. At C1, the challenge is less about forming an individual tense and more about coordinating several choices: vocabulary, sentence structure, the degree of impersonality, and the relationship between ideas. A sentence can be grammatically correct yet still sound too conversational—or so inflated that it becomes difficult to follow.

This register often gives attention to an action, finding, or argument rather than to the person performing it. Hindi therefore makes frequent use of the passive voice, in which the affected thing becomes central, and of nominalization, the packaging of an action or quality as a noun. Compare the direct शोधकर्ताओं ने आँकड़ों का विश्लेषण किया (“The researchers analyzed the data”) with the more impersonal आँकड़ों का विश्लेषण किया गया (“The data were analyzed”). Both are valid; the second suppresses the researchers because the procedure matters more.

English-language learners will recognize many of the same tendencies from English academic prose: “the analysis of,” “it was concluded that,” and “however.” Hindi, however, marks grammatical agreement more visibly in many passive expressions and draws on its own continuum from everyday Hindustani to strongly Sanskritic terminology. Formality is therefore not achieved by translating English academic phrases word for word.

How It Works

1. Choose precise vocabulary, not merely difficult vocabulary

Formal Hindi often prefers Sanskrit-derived, or तत्सम, words in learned contexts. Everyday words do not become incorrect; the formal choice simply fits a report or argument better. The appropriate term also depends on the field and audience.

Everyday or neutral More formal or academic Typical meaning
शुरुआत आरंभ / प्रारंभ beginning, commencement
ज़रूरत आवश्यकता need, necessity
इस्तेमाल उपयोग / प्रयोग use, application
नतीजा परिणाम / निष्कर्ष result / conclusion
बदलाव परिवर्तन change
मदद सहायता help, assistance
तरीका विधि / पद्धति method, system
बारे में के संबंध में / के संदर्भ में about, regarding / in the context of
पहले बताया गया उपर्युक्त / उक्त mentioned above / aforementioned

These pairs are not always exact synonyms. परिणाम is an outcome; निष्कर्ष is a conclusion reached by reasoning. विधि can be a method or procedure, while पद्धति often suggests an organized system or methodology. Use the word whose meaning is right, rather than treating the right-hand column as an automatic substitution list.

Formal compounds commonly place the key noun last: शिक्षा-नीति “education policy,” भाषा-अध्ययन “language study,” and डेटा-विश्लेषण “data analysis.” Modern academic Hindi also uses established English loans such as डेटा, मॉडल, and वायरस. A natural specialist text may combine these with Hindi grammar; purity is not the goal.

2. Use passive constructions to foreground the process

A passive clause presents someone or something as undergoing an action. Its common pattern is:

object or topic + main verb perfective form + जाना

The form of जाना carries tense and aspect, while the main verb appears in its perfective form. Agreement normally follows the promoted subject when that subject is unmarked.

Pattern Example Meaning
masculine singular निर्णय लिया गया the decision was made
feminine singular अनुमति दी गई permission was granted
masculine plural उपाय किए गए measures were taken
present habitual अध्ययन किया जाता है the study is conducted / is generally done
future परिणाम प्रकाशित किए जाएँगे the results will be published
necessity समीक्षा की जानी चाहिए a review should be carried out

Hindi frequently omits the agent—the doer—when it is unknown, obvious, or irrelevant: सर्वेक्षण 2025 में किया गया (“The survey was conducted in 2025”). If the agent must be stated, के द्वारा can introduce it: समिति के द्वारा प्रस्ताव स्वीकार किया गया. This is grammatical, but repeated के द्वारा phrases can sound bureaucratic. An active clause such as समिति ने प्रस्ताव स्वीकार किया is often shorter and clearer.

Some highly useful formal patterns behave like ready-made frames:

  • यह पाया गया कि… — It was found that…
  • यह निष्कर्ष निकाला गया कि… — It was concluded that…
  • यह निर्णय लिया गया कि… — It was decided that…
  • यह उल्लेखनीय है कि… — It is noteworthy that…
  • इस बात पर बल दिया गया कि… — Emphasis was placed on the fact that…

3. Turn actions and qualities into nouns

A nominalization is a noun or noun-like expression that names an action, process, or quality. Instead of saying only what people do, formal Hindi can discuss अध्ययन “study,” विश्लेषण “analysis,” मूल्यांकन “evaluation,” वृद्धि “increase,” or आवश्यकता “necessity” as topics in their own right.

Compare these structures:

More verbal More nominal Difference in focus
सरकार ने योजना लागू की। योजना का कार्यान्वयन किया गया। the implementation becomes the topic
हमने आँकड़ों का विश्लेषण किया। आँकड़ों के विश्लेषण से… the analysis becomes a basis or cause
शिक्षा में सुधार होना आवश्यक है। शिक्षा में सुधार की आवश्यकता है। the need is presented as a concept
जनसंख्या बढ़ रही है। जनसंख्या में वृद्धि हो रही है। the trend is described abstractly

The infinitive in -ना can also function as a verbal noun: नियमों का पालन करना आवश्यक है (“Following the rules is necessary”). It remains closer to an action than a lexical noun such as पालन. Both forms are useful; the noun-heavy version is not automatically superior.

Postpositions attach to these nominal groups in regular Hindi order: अध्ययन के आधार पर (“on the basis of the study”), परिणामों के संबंध में (“regarding the results”), परिवर्तन के कारण (“because of the change”), and समस्या के समाधान हेतु (“for the purpose of solving the problem”). हेतु is distinctly formal; के लिए is more neutral and often perfectly appropriate.

4. Make logical relationships explicit

Connectors tell the reader whether the next statement is a result, contrast, concession, addition, or example. They help organize an argument, but they must match the logical relationship.

Function Common connector Usual sense
result or inference अतः, इसलिए, परिणामस्वरूप therefore, so, as a result
contrast तथापि, फिर भी, दूसरी ओर nevertheless, still, on the other hand
concession यद्यपि… तथापि / फिर भी… although… nevertheless…
addition इसके अतिरिक्त, साथ ही in addition, at the same time
explanation or cause क्योंकि, चूँकि because, since
example उदाहरणार्थ, उदाहरण के लिए for example
restatement दूसरे शब्दों में in other words
conclusion निष्कर्षतः, अंततः in conclusion, ultimately

अतः presents an inference or consequence and is more distinctly formal than neutral इसलिए. तथापि means “nevertheless”; it does not merely add a second point. In the paired construction यद्यपि X, तथापि Y, X grants a fact and Y states the claim that still holds: यद्यपि नमूना छोटा था, तथापि परिणाम महत्त्वपूर्ण हैं। In contemporary prose, यद्यपि X, फिर भी Y is also common and somewhat less elevated.

5. Build information in manageable stages

Academic Hindi can use long sentences, but length is not the purpose. A useful structure moves from context to claim to support:

इस अध्ययन के निष्कर्षों के आधार पर, यह कहा जा सकता है कि… “On the basis of this study’s findings, it can be said that…”

Relative-correlative patterns also organize complex claims: जिन विद्यार्थियों ने नियमित अभ्यास किया, उनके परिणाम बेहतर रहे (“The students who practiced regularly had better results”). Keep the related forms visible—जो…वह, जिन…उनके, जहाँ…वहाँ—so that the reader can follow the sentence.

English often stacks several nouns before another noun, as in “language policy implementation review.” Hindi usually makes relationships explicit with का/के/की or divides the expression: भाषा-नीति के कार्यान्वयन की समीक्षा. This is clearer than copying English noun order.

Examples in Context

Hindi English Note
उक्त विषय में विस्तृत शोध की आवश्यकता है। Detailed research is needed regarding the aforementioned subject. उक्त refers back to an already identified topic.
यह निर्णय लिया गया कि अगले चरण में आँकड़े पुनः एकत्र किए जाएँगे। It was decided that the data would be collected again in the next phase. Impersonal passive frame followed by a passive future.
अतः यह स्पष्ट है कि वर्तमान नीति में परिवर्तन आवश्यक है। Therefore, it is clear that the current policy must be changed. अतः marks an inference.
यद्यपि नमूना सीमित था, तथापि निष्कर्ष उपयोगी हैं। Although the sample was limited, the conclusions are nevertheless useful. Balanced concessive pair.
उपलब्ध साक्ष्यों के आधार पर इस दावे की पुष्टि नहीं की जा सकती। This claim cannot be confirmed on the basis of the available evidence. Passive possibility with नहीं की जा सकती.
अध्ययन में तीन प्रमुख प्रवृत्तियों की पहचान की गई। Three major trends were identified in the study. The findings, not the researchers, are foregrounded.
परिणामों का सावधानीपूर्वक विश्लेषण किया जाना चाहिए। The results should be analyzed carefully. Formal expression of necessity.
इस संदर्भ में पूर्ववर्ती अध्ययनों का उल्लेख करना प्रासंगिक होगा। In this context, it would be relevant to mention previous studies. Cautious recommendation with होगा.
जनसंख्या में हुई वृद्धि के परिणामस्वरूप संसाधनों पर दबाव बढ़ा है। As a result of population growth, pressure on resources has increased. Nominal expression plus result connector.
शोध से यह संकेत मिलता है कि दोनों कारकों के बीच संबंध है। The research indicates that there is a relationship between the two factors. संकेत मिलता है avoids an excessively strong claim.
दूसरी ओर, ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में स्थिति भिन्न पाई गई। On the other hand, the situation in rural areas was found to be different. Contrast between parts of an analysis.
प्रस्ताव के कार्यान्वयन हेतु पर्याप्त धन उपलब्ध नहीं कराया गया। Sufficient funds were not provided for implementing the proposal. हेतु and a passive create a formal tone.
निष्कर्षतः, समस्या का समाधान केवल विधायी परिवर्तन से संभव नहीं है। In conclusion, the problem cannot be solved through legislative change alone. A restrained concluding statement.

Common Mistakes

Using a connector with the wrong logic

  • Wrong: नमूना छोटा था। अतः परिणाम विश्वसनीय हैं।
  • Right: यद्यपि नमूना छोटा था, फिर भी परिणाम उपयोगी हैं।
  • Why: अतः signals that the second claim follows from the first. Here the relationship is concession: the result holds despite the limitation.

Forgetting agreement in the passive

  • Wrong: अनुमति दिया गया।
  • Right: अनुमति दी गई।
  • Why: अनुमति is feminine singular, so both perfective elements agree: दी गई.

Translating the English dummy “it” as यह everywhere

  • Awkward: यह संभव है अध्ययन करना कि…
  • Right: यह संभव है कि… / अध्ययन से यह स्पष्ट होता है कि…
  • Why: Hindi uses यह … कि frames, but English word order cannot be copied mechanically. Put the कि clause after a complete Hindi frame.

Overusing passive and abstract nouns

  • Heavy: समिति द्वारा योजना के कार्यान्वयन की प्रक्रिया का आरंभ किया गया।
  • Clearer: समिति ने योजना का कार्यान्वयन आरंभ किया।
  • Why: Passive voice, द्वारा, प्रक्रिया, and a light verb all repeat information. Formal writing still benefits from a clear actor and a strong verb.

Choosing the most Sanskritic word without checking its meaning

  • Wrong approach: replacing every नतीजा with निष्कर्ष.
  • Better: use परिणाम for an outcome and निष्कर्ष for a conclusion drawn from evidence.
  • Why: Register cannot compensate for imprecise meaning.

Copying English noun order

  • Awkward: शिक्षा नीति कार्यान्वयन मूल्यांकन रिपोर्ट
  • Clearer: शिक्षा-नीति के कार्यान्वयन के मूल्यांकन की रिपोर्ट
  • Why: Hindi normally shows the relationships among these nouns with compounds and का/के/की.

Usage Notes

Formal Hindi is a spectrum. A research paper may use अतः, उपर्युक्त, परिकल्पना, and कार्यप्रणाली, while a quality newspaper may prefer more accessible alternatives. A speech intended for a broad audience often mixes formal organization with familiar vocabulary. Choose for the readers and genre, not for maximum formality.

उक्त and उपर्युक्त point backward in a document and can sound legalistic in conversation. के संबंध में is useful in reports and correspondence; के संदर्भ में specifically frames something within a context. In ordinary speech, के बारे में is usually more natural. Similarly, तथापि belongs mainly to careful writing and prepared speech, whereas फिर भी works across a wider range of settings.

Punctuation helps readers process complex syntax. A comma after an opening phrase or subordinate clause can clarify structure: उपलब्ध आँकड़ों के अनुसार, यह प्रवृत्ति नई नहीं है। Do not make every sentence long. Alternating a developed sentence with a short interpretive one often produces stronger academic prose.

Be cautious about certainty. Academic claims commonly distinguish evidence from proof:

  • इससे संकेत मिलता है कि… — this suggests that…
  • यह कहा जा सकता है कि… — it can be said that…
  • संभवतः… — possibly / probably…
  • इसकी पुष्टि नहीं की जा सकती। — this cannot be confirmed.

These are not empty hedges. They express how strongly the evidence supports the claim.

Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use

At an advanced level, style depends on managing distance and responsibility. यह पाया गया कि… removes the researcher from view, which may appropriately emphasize a repeatable finding. But हमने पाया कि… can be more transparent when the author’s interpretation or method matters. Modern academic writing does not require the author to disappear from every sentence.

Writers also create cohesion by repeating a key term, using a controlled synonym, or referring back with यह, इस प्रकार, उक्त, or उपर्युक्त. The reference must be unambiguous. If यह could refer to two different findings, repeat the relevant noun: यह परिणाम, यह तर्क, or यह परिवर्तन.

A polished argument varies its grammatical packaging. Use an active clause to assign responsibility, a passive to foreground a procedure, and a nominal expression to connect that procedure to the next claim:

शोधकर्ताओं ने नमूने चुने। प्रत्येक नमूने का दो बार परीक्षण किया गया। इस परीक्षण के परिणामों के आधार पर अंतिम वर्गीकरण तैयार किया गया। “The researchers selected the samples. Each sample was tested twice. The final classification was prepared on the basis of the results of this testing.”

This progression is more readable than forcing all three sentences into one structure. The advanced skill is therefore rhetorical control: deciding what the reader should notice first in each sentence.

Practice Tips

  1. Rewrite in both directions. Take five active sentences from a report and make them passive; then decide which version communicates the important information better. Check agreement carefully: किया गया, की गई, किए गए.
  2. Build a connector notebook by function. Group अतः, तथापि, इसके अतिरिक्त, and उदाहरणार्थ under result, contrast, addition, and example. For each one, write two linked sentences so that you practice the logic, not just the translation.
  3. Edit for clarity after editing for formality. In a 150-word paragraph, underline abstract nouns and passive verbs. Replace any that hide a necessary actor or repeat an idea. Read the paragraph aloud; if you lose the sentence halfway through, divide it.
