Compound Words (Samās) in Hindi

समास

This article is part of the Hindi grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

समास (samās) is the compacting of two or more meaningful elements into one compound expression. To understand a compound, expand it into a विग्रह (vigrah, an explanatory phrase): राजपुत्रराजा का पुत्र “the king’s son.” The category depends primarily on the meaning relationship between the parts—not simply on how the word looks.

Overview

Hindi uses both everyday compounds and a large stock of Sanskrit-derived compounds. You meet them in news reports, administration, literature, religious writing, academic prose, and ordinary vocabulary: प्रधानमंत्री “prime minister,” माता-पिता “parents,” नीलकंठ “the blue-throated one,” and प्रतिदिन “every day.” At C1, recognising how these words are built helps you infer unfamiliar vocabulary and read formal Hindi more confidently.

A compound combines meaningful elements while leaving part of their relationship unstated. In राजपुत्र, for example, the possessive marker का is absent but understood. Expanding the compound as राजा का पुत्र makes that relationship visible. This expansion is called समास-विग्रह. It is a meaning-based explanation, not necessarily a literal history of every sound in the modern word.

Traditional school grammar usually distinguishes several types. The most useful for advanced learners are तत्पुरुष, कर्मधारय, द्वंद्व, द्विगु, बहुव्रीहि, and अव्ययीभाव. Classification can vary slightly across grammatical traditions—especially because कर्मधारय and द्विगु may be treated as subtypes of तत्पुरुष—but the meaning tests below remain practical.

How It Works

Start with the विग्रह

Ask what phrase the compound compresses. The missing relationship may be possession, purpose, source, location, comparison, coordination, or something else.

Compound Possible विग्रह Meaning Hidden relationship
राजपुत्र राजा का पुत्र king’s son possession: का
वनवास वन में वास residence/exile in a forest location: में
देशभक्ति देश के प्रति भक्ति devotion to one’s country direction: के प्रति
हस्तलिखित हाथ से लिखित handwritten instrument: से
माता-पिता माता और पिता mother and father; parents coordination: और

The same surface sequence can occasionally support more than one analysis, so use the established meaning and the sentence context. A good विग्रह must explain what the whole expression actually means.

तत्पुरुष: one member depends on the other

In a तत्पुरुष समास, the second member is normally the main element, while the first has a grammatical relationship to it. The omitted marker might be का/के/की, को, से, के लिए, में, or another postposition. A postposition is a relation word placed after a noun in Hindi, such as में “in” or से “from/by.”

  • राजपुत्र = राजा का पुत्र — the king’s son
  • गृहप्रवेश = गृह में प्रवेश — entry into a home; house-entry ceremony
  • यशप्राप्त = यश को प्राप्त — having attained fame
  • रसोईघर = रसोई के लिए घर/स्थान — kitchen

Not every possible expansion sounds equally natural in modern conversation. The point is to reveal the semantic relation, not to produce the only acceptable paraphrase.

कर्मधारय: description plus head

A कर्मधारय समास normally has two parts referring to the same person or thing. The first describes, identifies, or compares the second; the second is the head (the part naming the basic kind of thing).

  • प्रधानमंत्री = प्रधान मंत्री — the chief/foremost minister
  • नीलकमल = नीला कमल — blue lotus
  • महापुरुष = महान पुरुष — great person
  • चंद्रमुख = चंद्रमा के समान मुख — moon-like face

A useful test is “What kind of X?” A नीलकमल is a kind of कमल, and a प्रधानमंत्री is a kind of मंत्री. Traditional descriptions may call the relation adjective–noun, identity, or comparison.

द्वंद्व: both members count equally

In a द्वंद्व समास, the parts are coordinated. Expand it with और “and,” or occasionally या “or.” Neither member merely describes the other.

  • माता-पिता = माता और पिता — parents
  • दिन-रात = दिन और रात — day and night; constantly
  • सुख-दुख = सुख और दुख — joys and sorrows
  • लेन-देन = लेना और देना — transactions; dealings

Modern Hindi often writes these paired forms with a hyphen, though spelling conventions differ by expression and publisher.

द्विगु: a number defines a set

A द्विगु समास begins with a numeral or quantity element and commonly denotes a collection, group, or unit associated with that number.

  • त्रिलोक = तीन लोकों का समूह — the three worlds
  • सप्ताह = traditionally सात दिनों का समूह — week
  • नवरात्र = नौ रातों का समूह/पर्व — the nine-night festival
  • पंचवटी = पाँच वटों का समूह/स्थान — a place associated with five banyan trees

Do not label every word beginning with a number द्विगु automatically. First check whether the whole word denotes the numbered set or unit. If it instead names an outside possessor, it may be बहुव्रीहि.

बहुव्रीहि: the compound points outside itself

In a बहुव्रीहि समास, neither member directly names the referent. The whole compound describes someone or something that has the stated quality. In plain English terms, it works like “redhead”: the word does not mean a red head itself, but a person who has red hair.

  • नीलकंठ = नीला कंठ है जिसका — one whose throat is blue; an epithet of Shiva, and also a bird name
  • चतुर्भुज = चार भुजाएँ हैं जिसकी/जिसके — four-armed; a four-armed being
  • दशानन = दस आनन हैं जिसके — the ten-faced one, Ravana
  • लंबोदर = लंबा उदर है जिसका — the long/big-bellied one, an epithet of Ganesha

The key test is external reference. नीलकमल is a blue lotus, so it is कर्मधारय; नीलकंठ conventionally identifies a being who has a blue throat, so it is बहुव्रीहि.

अव्ययीभाव: the whole behaves adverbially or indeclinably

An अव्यय is an indeclinable word—a form that does not change for gender, number, or case. In an अव्ययीभाव समास, an indeclinable first element is prominent, and the whole compound commonly functions as an unchanging adverbial expression.

  • प्रतिदिन = हर दिन — every day
  • यथासंभव = जितना संभव हो — as far as possible
  • आजीवन = जीवन भर — lifelong; for life
  • भरपेट = पेट भरकर — to one’s fill

These are best learned as fixed units. Their internal analysis may be transparent, but their natural translation depends on the sentence.

Common Mistakes

Classifying only from the first element

  • Wrong: चतुर्भुज must be द्विगु because it begins with “four.”
  • Right: In “four-armed Vishnu,” it is बहुव्रीहि.
  • Why: The word refers to someone who has four arms, not to a group of four arms. Meaning outranks appearance.

Confusing कर्मधारय with बहुव्रीहि

  • Wrong: नीलकमल and नीलकंठ have the same analysis because both begin with नील.
  • Right: नीलकमल is कर्मधारय (“a lotus that is blue”); नीलकंठ is बहुव्रीहि when it means “one whose throat is blue.”
  • Why: In the first, the second member names the object. In the second, the compound points to an outside referent.

Writing a विग्रह that ignores actual meaning

  • Wrong: माता-पिता = माता का पिता.
  • Right: माता और पिता.
  • Why: This is coordination, not possession. Check the expression in a sentence before selecting a missing postposition.

Assuming every adjacent pair is a समास

  • Wrong: Treating any ordinary adjective–noun phrase, such as सुंदर घर, as a fixed compound.
  • Right: Reserve compound analysis for a conventional compact unit such as प्रधानमंत्री or महापुरुष.
  • Why: Hindi can place separate words next to each other without creating a lexical compound. Fixed meaning, established usage, and spelling all matter.

Forcing Sanskrit-style compounds into everyday speech

  • Less natural in casual conversation: मेरे गृहागमन के पश्चात्...
  • More natural: मेरे घर आने के बाद...
  • Why: Sanskrit-derived compact forms can sound official or literary. A grammatically possible compound is not always the idiomatic choice.

Usage Notes

Compound spelling in Hindi is not perfectly predictable. Some forms are solid (प्रधानमंत्री, प्रतिदिन), coordinated pairs are often hyphenated (माता-पिता, सुख-दुख), and some expressions may also appear with a space according to editorial style. When writing, follow a current dictionary or the style guide of the publication rather than inventing a spelling from the analysis alone.

Sanskrit-derived compounds are especially productive in formal domains: जलवायु परिवर्तन “climate change,” मानवाधिकार “human rights,” कार्यस्थल “workplace,” and जनकल्याण “public welfare.” Everyday Hindi often prefers an expanded phrase where highly Sanskritised prose prefers a compact compound. English also compounds nouns—“workplace,” “human rights,” “prime minister”—but English word order does not reliably reveal the omitted Hindi relation. Learn the Hindi विग्रह rather than mapping the parts mechanically.

Inflection generally appears at the edge of a compound or on the expression as a whole: प्रधानमंत्री ने, प्रधानमंत्री को, प्रधानमंत्रियों की बैठक. Avoid trying to decline each internal member independently. However, lexicalised forms and coordinated pairs have their own conventional patterns, so observe authentic examples.

Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use

Classification depends on use

A compound is not always assigned a type in isolation. Context can determine whether it names its second member or an external possessor. A descriptive sequence meaning “blue throat” and the proper name नीलकंठ do different semantic work. Likewise, compounds can become names, titles, technical labels, or idioms, and their present-day meaning may be narrower than their transparent विग्रह suggests.

Zero-marked relations are not all the same

The label तत्पुरुष covers several hidden relations traditionally associated with case roles: object, instrument, recipient/purpose, source, possession, and location. For reading, it is more useful to recover a sensible phrase—हाथ से लिखित, वन में वास, देश के लिए सेवा—than to memorise a subtype number without understanding it.

समास and संधि are different operations

समास concerns the grammatical and semantic combination of words; संधि concerns sound changes where elements meet. A form may involve both, but they answer different questions. समास-विग्रह explains the hidden meaning relationship, while संधि-विच्छेद separates sounds or forms according to phonological rules. Do not use the two labels interchangeably.

Traditional boundaries vary

Some teaching systems list कर्मधारय and द्विगु independently; others place them under तत्पुरुष. You may also encounter analyses that differ for a lexicalised word. In an exam, use the classification system prescribed by that course. In real reading, prioritise three skills: identifying the head, recovering the omitted relation, and deciding whether the compound refers internally or externally.

Practice Tips

  1. Write the विग्रह first. Collect five compounds from a newspaper and expand each with का/के/की, में, से, के लिए, और, or जिसका. Classify only after the meaning is clear.
  2. Practise contrast pairs. Compare नीलकमल with नीलकंठ, and a numbered group such as नवरात्र with an external description such as चतुर्भुज. Explaining the contrast aloud is more effective than memorising labels alone.
  3. Keep register with the word. In your vocabulary notes, mark a compound “everyday,” “formal,” “literary,” or “religious” and save one complete sentence. This prevents technically correct but unnatural overuse.
