Conditional Constructions in Chinese
条件句
This article is part of the Chinese grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
Overview
Chinese conditional constructions express "if...then" relationships using paired conjunctions. The main patterns are 如果...就 (rúguǒ...jiù, if...then), 要是...就 (yàoshi...jiù, if...then -- colloquial), 只要...就 (zhǐyào...jiù, as long as...then), and 除非...才 (chúfēi...cái, unless...only then).
At the CEFR B1 level, conditionals open up hypothetical reasoning, planning, and persuasion. Chinese conditionals do not require verb mood changes (no subjunctive) -- the conditional meaning comes entirely from the conjunction pairs.
The nuances between different conditional markers are important: 如果 is neutral, 要是 is casual, 只要 implies a sufficient condition, and 除非 implies a necessary condition.
How It Works
| Pattern | Pinyin | Meaning | Nuance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 如果...就 | rúguǒ...jiù | if...then | neutral, standard |
| 要是...就 | yàoshi...jiù | if...then | casual, spoken |
| 只要...就 | zhǐyào...jiù | as long as...then | sufficient condition |
| 除非...才 | chúfēi...cái | unless...only then | necessary condition |
| 万一...就 | wànyī...jiù | in case...then | unlikely possibility |
Structure
The conditional clause typically comes first, followed by the result clause with 就 or 才:
如果 + condition, (Subject) + 就 + result

Common Mistakes
Confusing 就 and 才 in conditionals
- Wrong: 除非他来,我就去。
- Right: 除非他来,我才去。(Unless he comes, only then will I go.)
- Why: 除非 pairs with 才 (necessary condition); 如果/只要 pair with 就.
Omitting 就 from the result clause
- Wrong: 如果下雨,我不去。
- Right: 如果下雨,我就不去。
- Why: While sometimes acceptable, including 就 makes the conditional relationship explicit and is grammatically preferred.
Using conditionals with past certainties
- Wrong: 如果昨天下雨了 (if it rained yesterday -- it either did or didn't)
- Right: Use conditionals for uncertain or hypothetical situations
- Why: Conditionals work best with uncertain future events or hypothetical scenarios.
Practice Tips
- Practice making conditional plans: 如果...就... for weather, schedules, and social arrangements.
- Learn the nuance trio: 如果 (neutral if), 只要 (minimum requirement), 除非 (absolute requirement).
- Use 要是 in casual conversation -- it sounds more natural than 如果 in spoken Chinese.
