Comparatives and Superlatives in Yoruba

Ìfiwéra àti Àkúdá

Overview

At the B1 level, you deepen your comparison skills beyond the basic "ju...lọ" pattern to include superlatives and nuanced equality expressions. The superlative in Yoruba uses "jùlọ" (the most) and is formed by attaching it to the quality word. Understanding these structures fully allows you to express opinions, make rankings, and discuss preferences with precision.

The comparative "ju...lọ" (more than) was introduced at A2. The superlative adds "jùlọ" (most): "Adé lọ́lá jùlọ" (Ade is the richest). Equality uses "bí...bẹ́ẹ̀" (as...as) or "dọ́gba" (equal). Inferiority (less than) is expressed through negation: "Kò ga tó mi" (He is not as tall as me) or by reversing the comparison.

These comparison patterns are essential for B1 because they enable discussions about preferences, rankings, evaluations, and recommendations -- all key communicative functions expected at this level.

How It Works

Structure Pattern Example
Comparative A + quality + ju + B + lọ Ó ga ju mi lọ. (Taller than me.)
Superlative Subject + quality + jùlọ Adé lọ́lá jùlọ. (Ade is the richest.)
Equality A + quality + bí + B Ó dára bí tèmi. (As good as mine.)
Equality A dọ́gba pẹ̀lú B Wọn dọ́gba. (They are equal.)
Inferiority A kò + quality + tó + B Kò ga tó mi. (Not as tall as me.)

Question form: Èwo ni ó [quality] jùlọ? (Which one is the most [quality]?)

Examples in Context

Yoruba English Note
Ó ga ju mi lọ. He/She is taller than me. Comparative
Adé lọ́lá jùlọ. Ade is the richest. Superlative
Ó dára bí tèmi. It is as good as mine. Equality
Èwo ni ó tóbi jùlọ? Which one is the biggest? Superlative question
Ilé yìí dára jù gbogbo rẹ̀ lọ. This house is better than all of them. Comparison with group
Wọ́n dọ́gba ní ìga. They are equal in height. Equality with specification
Kò dára tó tèmi. It is not as good as mine. Inferiority
Oun ni ó mọ̀ jùlọ. He/She knows the most. Superlative ability
Ẹja yìí wọ́n jù gbogbo rẹ̀ lọ. This fish is the most expensive of all. Price superlative
Ó yára jù wọn lọ. He/She is the fastest among them. Speed comparison

Common Mistakes

Placing jùlọ Incorrectly

  • Wrong: Jùlọ tóbi ni Adé. (Most big is Ade.)
  • Right: Adé tóbi jùlọ. (Ade is the biggest.)
  • Why: Jùlọ follows the quality word directly. The subject comes before the quality.

Confusing Comparative and Superlative

  • Wrong: Ó ga jùlọ ju mi lọ. (mixing both constructions)
  • Right: Ó ga ju mi lọ. (comparative) or Ó ga jùlọ. (superlative)
  • Why: Use ju...lọ for comparing two things, jùlọ for identifying the extreme in a group.

Not Using kò...tó for "Less Than"

  • Wrong: Looking for a specific "less than" word.
  • Right: Kò ga tó mi. (Not as tall as me = shorter than me.)
  • Why: Yoruba expresses inferiority through negation of equality rather than a separate comparative.

Practice Tips

  1. Rank items in groups of three: Compare three things using all three structures: comparative, superlative, and equality.
  2. Practice superlative questions: "Èwo ni ó dára jùlọ?" (Which is the best?) -- practice asking and answering.
  3. Use negation for "less than": Practice "kò...tó" patterns alongside positive comparatives.
