Cleft Sentences and Emphasis in Yoruba
Gbólóhùn Ìtẹnu Mọ́
Overview
Cleft sentences in Yoruba place a focused element at the beginning of the sentence, marked by "ni," to create emphasis. At the B2 level, understanding the full range of cleft constructions builds on your B2 knowledge of focus constructions and allows you to create precisely targeted emphasis in any part of a sentence.
The cleft construction "X ni..." (It is X that/who...) can focus any sentence element: subjects, objects, adverbials, and even entire propositions. "Adé ni ó wá" (It is Ade who came), "Ilé ni mo ń lọ" (It is home I am going), "Owó ni ó nílò" (It is money he needs). Each of these foregrounds a different element for emphasis.
Cleft sentences are not merely optional emphasis -- they are the default structure for answering content questions. "Ta ni ó wá?" (Who came?) naturally receives "Adé ni ó wá" (It is Ade who came). This question-answer alignment makes cleft sentences among the most frequent constructions in natural Yoruba discourse.

| Instrument | Owó ni ó nílò. | It is money he needs. |

Common Mistakes
Not Using Clefts for Question Answers
- Wrong: "Ta ni ó wá?" → "Adé wá." (neutral, but misses the expected focus structure)
- Right: "Ta ni ó wá?" → "Adé ni ó wá." (cleft answer matching the question)
- Why: Content questions use focus, and answers should mirror the focus structure.
Incorrect Pronoun After ni
- Wrong: Adé ni mo wá. (It is Ade that I came -- wrong meaning)
- Right: Adé ni ó wá. (It is Ade who came.) -- ó refers back to Adé
- Why: The pronoun in the clause after ni must match the role of the focused element.
Practice Tips
- Practice question-answer cleft pairs: For every content question, answer with a cleft: "Kí ni o ra?" → "Ìwé ni mo rà."
- Focus different elements of the same sentence: "Mo ra ìwé lánàá" → Focus subject: "Èmi ni mo ra ìwé lánàá." Focus object: "Ìwé ni mo rà lánàá." Focus time: "Lánàá ni mo ra ìwé."
- Read and identify clefts in Yoruba text: Whenever you see X + ni + clause, identify the focused element.
