Word Formation in Ukrainian
Словотвір
This article is part of the Ukrainian grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
In Brief
Ukrainian forms many new words by adding a suffix to a meaningful base: активний → активність “active → activity” and працювати → працівник “to work → worker.” The patterns -ість, -ний/-ній, -ник/-тель, and -ство are useful, but they are not interchangeable formulas: the base may change, and established usage determines which derivative sounds natural.
Overview
Word formation is the creation of one lexeme (a dictionary word) from another. In this article, the main process is derivation: adding a suffix to a base or stem to create a word with a new meaning or a new part of speech. A stem is the part to which an ending or suffix is attached. For example, активн- is visible in активний and активність.
At C1, recognising a suffix is only the beginning. You also need to know whether a possible-looking word is actually conventional, what register it belongs to, and how its meaning has developed. English often uses a different word or a phrase where Ukrainian uses one derivative: читач is “reader,” while керівництво can mean “leadership,” “management,” or “guidance” depending on context.
The four groups here cover abstract nouns in -ість, relational adjectives in -ний/-ній, names of people or instruments in -ник/-тель, and collective, status, or domain nouns in -ство. They are productive to different degrees. “Productive” means that speakers can still use a pattern to form or readily understand new words; it does not mean that every base accepts that suffix.
How It Works
Abstract nouns with -ість
The suffix -ість usually creates a feminine abstract noun from an adjective. It names a quality, condition, or measurable property and works much like English -ness or -ity.
| Adjective | Abstract noun | Core meaning |
|---|---|---|
| активний | активність | activity |
| відповідальний | відповідальність | responsibility |
| можливий | можливість | possibility |
| незалежний | незалежність | independence |
| стабільний | стабільність | stability |
| сучасний | сучасність | modernity; the present age |
Do not simply attach -ість to the full masculine form. Start from the adjectival stem and replace the adjective ending: активн-ий → активн-ість. Some stems alternate or shorten: певний → певність, якісний → якість. Once formed, the noun declines as a feminine third-declension noun: можливість, можливості, можливістю.
The pattern may compete with an older or more frequent noun. Красивість is structurally transparent and means “loveliness” or “the quality of being beautiful,” but ordinary Ukrainian normally prefers краса for “beauty.” Thus the chain красивий → краса → красивість demonstrates a word family, not three freely interchangeable words.
Adjectives with -ний and -ній
The suffixes written as -ний and, in a smaller set of formations, -ній form adjectives that express relation, suitability, connection, or a resulting property. The source may be a noun or a verb-derived stem. English equivalents vary: -al, -ive, -able, a participle, or a noun used before another noun.
| Base | Adjective | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| навчання “study, instruction” | навчальний | instructional; educational |
| захист “protection” | захисний | protective |
| інформація “information” | інформаційний | informational; information-related |
| природа “nature” | природний | natural |
| майбутнє “future” | майбутній | future; forthcoming |
| край “edge, land” | крайній | extreme; last |
The apparent ending alone does not tell you the exact derivation. Писати → письменний → писемність (“write → literate → literacy”) is a word-family relationship with historical stem development, not a rule that turns any infinitive in -ати into an adjective. Likewise, письмовий means “written/in writing,” писемний relates to writing or literacy, and письменний traditionally means “literate.” Similar form does not guarantee identical meaning.
Keep these adjectives separate from participles—verb forms used adjectivally to present an action or its result. Compare захисний одяг “protective clothing,” which classifies the clothing by function, with захищений файл “a protected file,” which presents the file as having undergone protection.
Like other Ukrainian adjectives, derivatives agree with their noun in gender, number, and case (the form showing a noun’s role in the sentence): навчальний курс, навчальна програма, у навчальному центрі.
Agent and instrument nouns with -ник and -тель
An agent noun names a person who performs an action or has a role. -ник is highly productive and also names participants, specialists, adherents, objects, and devices. The form often attaches to a noun, adjective, or derived verbal base rather than directly to the visible infinitive.
| Base or family | Derivative | Usual meaning |
|---|---|---|
| праця / працювати | працівник | employee; worker |
| навчання / навчатися | навчальник | trainer/instructor in certain institutional uses |
| дослід / досліджувати | дослідник | researcher |
| захист / захищати | захисник | defender |
| чай | чайник | kettle; teapot |
| словник | — | dictionary (a lexicalised -ник word) |
The last examples show why suffixes do not define meaning by themselves: a чайник is normally an object, not “a person who teas,” and словник is a dictionary, not a worker.
-тель occurs in established names for people and instruments: вчитель “teacher,” водій rather than a hypothetical regular водитель for “driver,” and двигун rather than relying on a -тель formation for “engine.” In present-day Ukrainian, -тель is less freely productive than -ник and is often best learned as part of the whole word. Forms shared with or modelled closely on Russian require particular care; a familiar-looking -тель word may not be the preferred standard Ukrainian term.
Gendered counterparts are lexical rather than perfectly automatic. Common patterns include працівник → працівниця, дослідник → дослідниця, and вчитель → вчителька. Learn the established feminine form with the masculine one.
Nouns with -ство
-ство forms neuter nouns. Depending on the base, they may denote a collective body, a social status, a field or domain, an activity, or a characteristic behaviour.
| Base | Noun in -ство | Meaning type |
|---|---|---|
| суспільний / суспільство | суспільство | society; collective body |
| студент | студентство | students as a group |
| автор | авторство | authorship; status |
| партнер | партнерство | partnership; relationship/status |
| виробляти / виробник | виробництво | production; field/activity |
| вчитель | вчительство | the teaching profession or teachers collectively |
Morphological joins can produce -цтво or other stem changes, as in виробник → виробництво. These are conventional word forms, not spelling errors. Nouns in -ство decline as neuter nouns: партнерство, партнерства, партнерству.
A collective noun is grammatically singular even when it refers to many people: Студентство підтримало ініціативу “The student body supported the initiative.” If you mean several identifiable individuals, use a plural personal noun instead: студенти підтримали.
Word families are networks, not ladders
The source examples illustrate related vocabulary, but derivation does not always proceed in one neat direction. Вчити → вчитель → вчительство is transparent: action, person, then profession or collective. By contrast, говорити → мовець → красномовність links “speak,” “speaker,” and “eloquence” semantically, but красномовність is formed from красномовний “eloquent,” not directly from мовець. Treat arrows in a word family as aids to memory unless the morphological step is demonstrably regular.

Common Mistakes
Attaching -ість to the complete adjective
- Wrong: активнийість
- Right: активність
- Why: Replace the masculine adjective ending and use the stem: активн-ий → активн-ість.
Assuming every possible derivative is idiomatic
- Unnatural in a neutral sentence: Красивість цього міста мене вразила.
- Natural: Краса цього міста мене вразила.
- Why: Красивість exists, but краса is the usual unmarked noun for “beauty.” Morphological possibility does not equal normal frequency.
Confusing relational adjectives with participles
- Wrong for “protected document”: захисний документ
- Right: захищений документ
- Why: Захисний means designed for protection; захищений says that the document has been protected.
Choosing -тель by analogy with another Slavic language
- Wrong in standard Ukrainian: водитель автобуса
- Right: водій автобуса
- Why: Ukrainian often uses a different established noun. Do not manufacture or import an agent noun merely because its structure looks transparent.
Using plural agreement with a collective -ство noun
- Wrong: Студентство підтримали пропозицію.
- Right: Студентство підтримало пропозицію.
- Why: Студентство refers to many students but is grammatically neuter singular.
Reading a word family as a mechanical chain
- Misleading analysis: мовець → красномовність
- Better analysis: красномовний → красномовність
- Why: Related ideas need not stand in a direct derivational relationship. Identify the immediate base, not just a nearby word with a similar meaning.
Usage Notes
Abstract nouns in -ість are especially common in academic, administrative, journalistic, and analytical writing because they package a property as a topic: ефективність системи, доступність освіти, прозорість процесу. Too many nominalisations can make prose heavy, however. Compare formal здійснювати оцінювання ефективності with the more direct оцінювати, наскільки це ефективно.
Agent nouns also encode context. Працівник is a neutral employee or worker; робітник more often suggests a manual or industrial worker; співробітник can mean a colleague, staff member, or employee. English worker does not map to one suffix or one Ukrainian noun.
Collectives in -ство range from neutral institutional terms such as студентство to words whose tone depends strongly on context. Always check whether a derivative names a profession, all members of a group, an institution, or a behaviour. Dictionaries and corpus examples are more reliable than suffix matching alone.
Stress cannot always be predicted from the suffix. Learn the spoken form with the word, especially when moving from a familiar base to a less familiar abstract noun.
Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use
Word formation can change not only grammatical category but also perspective. Автори presents countable people; авторство presents the status or fact of having created something. Студенти can refer to a particular group, while студентство frames students as a social body. Skilled writing chooses between these perspectives rather than merely avoiding repetition.
Prefixes and suffixes can stack. From відповідальний come відповідальність and безвідповідальність “irresponsibility”; from залежний come залежність, незалежний, and незалежність. Analyse from the outside inward: in без-відповідаль-н-ість, the complete history matters less for use than recognising the negative element без- and the abstract ending -ість.
A derivative may become lexicalised, meaning that convention has given it a specific dictionary meaning not fully predictable from its pieces. Чайник and словник are clear examples. Semantic specialisation also creates contrasts inside one family: письмовий, писемний, and письменний all relate to writing, but they serve different collocations. At an advanced level, learn derivatives in phrases—письмова згода, писемна пам’ятка, письменна людина—rather than as isolated suffix equations.
Finally, modern terminology tests productivity. New professional names may compete, and speakers may disagree about style or preference. Before using a newly encountered formation in formal writing, check a current Ukrainian dictionary, edited Ukrainian sources, and real collocations. Grammatical transparency is evidence that a reader can understand a word, not proof that editors will prefer it.
Practice Tips
- Build families with meanings, not arrows alone. For one base, record the verb, person, adjective, and abstract noun where they genuinely exist: захищати — захисник — захисний — захищеність. Add one common phrase for each.
- Collect collocations. Search Ukrainian texts for five phrases with -ість or -ство, such as доступність послуг or громадянське суспільство. This reveals both meaning and register.
- Test prediction against evidence. Guess a derivative, then verify it in a dictionary and several edited examples. Mark it as common, specialised, dated, or merely understandable. This habit is more valuable at C1 than memorising a suffix list.
