Purpose Clauses with Щоб in Ukrainian

Overview

The conjunction щоб (in order to, so that) introduces purpose clauses and indirect commands in Ukrainian. At the CEFR B1 level, mastering щоб-constructions allows you to express intentions, goals, and indirect requests -- essential for moving beyond simple statements to purposeful, goal-oriented communication.

Щоб is followed by a past tense verb form (not an infinitive) when the subject of the purpose clause differs from the main clause. When the subjects are the same, щоб + infinitive is used. This rule is absolute and must be internalized.

Щоб-clauses are also the primary way to express indirect commands and wishes in Ukrainian, making them one of the most versatile subordinate constructions in the language.

Common Mistakes

Using infinitive with different subjects

• Wrong: Хочу, щоб ти допомогти.
• Right: Хочу, щоб ти допоміг.
• Why: When the subjects differ, щоб requires a past tense form, not an infinitive.

Using present tense after щоб

• Wrong: Щоб він приходить.
• Right: Щоб він прийшов.
• Why: Щоб always takes past tense forms (for different subjects) or infinitive (for same subject). Never present tense.

Forgetting щоб when English uses "to"

Usage Notes

Щоб is one of the most common conjunctions in Ukrainian. In everyday speech, the shortened form "щоб" sometimes becomes "шоб" in casual pronunciation, but this should be avoided in writing.

Note that the past tense forms after щоб do not indicate past time -- they function as subjunctive forms, expressing unrealized or desired actions. "Хочу, щоб прийшов" means "I want him to come" (future desire), not "I wanted him to have come."
