Prepositions of Time in Ukrainian
Прийменники Часу
Overview
Expressing when something happens requires temporal prepositions, each governing a specific case. At the CEFR A1 level, you need these prepositions to talk about schedules, daily routines, and plans -- fundamental conversational topics.
Ukrainian temporal prepositions interact with the case system in specific ways. The preposition у/в can take either accusative (for days of the week) or locative (for months), while о takes locative for clock times. Understanding which case each time expression requires is essential for accurate communication.
Some time expressions use no preposition at all, relying instead on the noun's case form alone. Learning these patterns alongside the prepositional ones gives you full coverage of basic temporal expression.
How It Works
Key Temporal Prepositions
| Preposition | Case | Usage | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| у / в | accusative | days of the week | у понеділок (on Monday) |
| у / в | locative | months | у січні (in January) |
| о / об | locative | clock time | о п'ятій годині (at 5 o'clock) |
| за | accusative | "in (time from now)" | за годину (in an hour) |
| через | accusative | "after (time period)" | через тиждень (in a week) |
| до | genitive | "before, until" | до ранку (until morning) |
| після | genitive | "after" | після обіду (after lunch) |
| під час | genitive | "during" | під час уроку (during the lesson) |
No-Preposition Time Expressions
Some temporal expressions use case alone:
- Instrumental for seasons: літом (in summer), зимою (in winter)
- Accusative for duration: цілий день (the whole day)
- Genitive for dates: першого березня (on March 1st)
Examples in Context

| у січні | in January | Locative |

| за годину | in an hour | Accusative |
| після уроку | after the lesson | Genitive |
| літом | in summer | Instrumental, no preposition |
| до вечора | until evening | Genitive |
| зранку | in the morning | No preposition |
| щодня | every day | Adverb |
| через два тижні | in two weeks | Accusative |
Common Mistakes
Wrong case after у for months
- Wrong: у січень (accusative)
- Right: у січні (locative)
- Why: Months use у + locative, while days of the week use у + accusative.
Using preposition with seasons
- Wrong: в літо (with preposition for "in summer")
- Right: влітку or літом
- Why: Seasons typically use instrumental case without a preposition, or adverbial forms.
Confusing за and через
- Wrong: Using them interchangeably.
- Right: Both can mean "in (future time)," but за is more common in speech. За годину прийду.
- Why: За + accusative is the standard colloquial form. Через is slightly more formal.
Usage Notes
Days of the week in Ukrainian are: понеділок, вівторок, середа, четвер, п'ятниця, субота, неділя. With у/в + accusative, they typically do not change form (except середа → середу).
For clock time, Ukrainian uses ordinal numbers in the feminine form (agreeing with "година"): о першій, о другій, о третій. The preposition "о" becomes "об" before vowels: об одинадцятій (at eleven).
Practice Tips
Weekly schedule: Write out your weekly schedule using у + day of the week and о + time.
Season expressions: Practice all four seasons with both instrumental and adverbial forms: весною/навесні, літом/влітку, осінню/восени, зимою/взимку.
Before/after chains: Describe a sequence of events using до, після, and за: "До обіду працюю, після обіду відпочиваю."
